peekay Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I'm slowly working on this one from Tomy in 1.32nd scale. If Tamiya's kit is this good then everyone will be happy. There is more PE than just the grille I've shown here, including the cowl vent and scripts. The window frames are beautifully chromed, much nicer than I could foil them. (The tyres appear to have oxidized over the years but should come right. The whitewall is an experiment of mine.)
sjordan2 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Just preordered mine..from my phone....HLJ's system is just so darn easy.. Can you give me a direct link where I can preorder online? Search isn't working for me.

beeRS Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 http://www.hlj.com/product/TAM24338/Aut Thanks for that link. I just ordered two! The GBP to Yen exchange rate is definitely in my favor. They work out as 18.80 GBP each. A few years ago I was paying 30.00+ GBP for Tamiya kits. (Note: Whenever I order from HLJ I choose the 2-5 day express courier - although it costs more, I never get clobbered with import tax!)

Thanks for the heads up about the shipping, just changed mine, and as the Yen is pretty low against the Pound, I've added another one to the order, pretty silly just ordering the one at those prices

Displayed side-by-side I think they'll quite good. Having seen some of your build threads on here Geoff, I'm sure this'll be another one of your masterpieces.
Pete J. Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Wow! under thirty bucks US! Got my order in. By the way I just got the shock of my life last week. Ordered some stuff shipped EMS(cheapest way possible) and I placed the order late on Thursday and it showed up on my door step on Monday! Under theses conditions FedEx makes no sense at all.

FedEx prices came back in line with EMS a little bit recently, about a $2 difference. I have to drive past the FedEx office, but my local Post Office (who refuse to leave packages for the past 8 months)is not on my way home.
sjordan2 Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 That Tomy 1/32 kit looks spectacular. One of the best I've seen.
MrObsessive Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I had forgotten Tomy made a 300 SL...........I DO remember an equally superb Porsche 356 in that scale and it was super nice! I went ahead and preordered the Benz on HLJ.......can't beat that price at today's exchange rate, and I suspect that'll be one of those kits that will sell out fast.
Exotics_Builder Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 The Tamiya kit looks great. I had the old AMT 300 SL but gave it to Bill Lastovich of Revell along with the Cheetah from Mini Exotics so he could build it. Bill was a member of a model club to which I belong and, besides being a great guy, was very helpful to me. The AMT kit was good, but the Tamiya looks better. Got mine on order from HLJ.
jbwelda Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 we are going to preorder HLJ right out of the ball park! that Tomy kit is super nice and I have at least one similar kit of a nice vintage exotic, don't recall right off hand but I think they did a Cobra, probably a Vette, and a couple others. all super nice with a lot of details and just a real impressive package. jb
PowerPlant Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I guess I better get rid of my crappy Revell kit while I still have a chance But, seriously, has an actual release date been announced yet? Apologies if I missed it somewhere in the previous discussion...
mike 51 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 My source says March....nothing more specfic.
martinfan5 Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 My source says March....nothing more specfic. That is the current projected release date, we already knew that
sjordan2 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 For some reason, my preorder at HLJ automatically set a quantity of 3 for my order, which I just caught. Those who are preordering might want to check.

jet Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I contacted the builder of the Tamiya display to find out what model year(s) the kit is designed around. The instructions say it is a 1957-1959 version for those looking for photo reference and options.
sjordan2 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) I contacted the builder of the Tamiya display to find out what model year(s) the kit is designed around. The instructions say it is a 1957-1959 version for those looking for photo reference and options. There were 1,400 production Gullwings beginning in 1954 and ending in 1957, when the car was joined by, and shortly replaced by the roadster (1957-63). No such thing as a 1958 or 1959 Gullwing. sjordan2 Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 (edited) Preorders must be going well. Today I see an HLJ ad on this site featuring a Gullwing photo. Edited February 13, 2015 by sjordan2
