FASTBACK340 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 C`mon, anybody interested in having THE stand-out rail at the next get-together?
vintagercr Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Looks strange but interesting. It looks like the front motor is hooked up to its own axle. Shouldnt be too hard to replicate.
thatz4u Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should...
FASTBACK340 Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 It was actually a Bonneville car called the Rhinoceros. It was owned by Noel Black. And yes, odd doesn't begin to describe it…..
DrKerry Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The burnout, the front engine must not be running because it's just the rear slicks spinning.......... Weird for sure!!!!!
Joe Handley Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Makes me wonder what a modern, rear engine dragster would look like with this front drive setup on it.
disabled modeler Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Strange but yet cool looking...Id give it a test drive...LOL...
madhorseman Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Were all multi engine dragsters of front engine design? And, were there ever multiple engine dragsters of rear engine design?
Joe Handley Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The burnout, the front engine must not be running because it's just the rear slicks spinning.......... Weird for sure!!!!! Could be running each engine on it's own throttle and has already smoked the fronts prior to that pic.
Daddyfink Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Were all multi engine dragsters of front engine design? And, were there ever multiple engine dragsters of rear engine design? There where a few, but not too many
Fat Brian Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Black was killed in this car. I'm not really as surprised by that as I thought I would be.
DrKerry Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Could be running each engine on it's own throttle and has already smoked the fronts prior to that pic. Very possible, the engine is running, you can see the butterflies open on the injector hat...
W-409 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Black was killed in this car. Ouch - this looks nasty. That would be a cool one to build, though! Maybe some day.
Scott Colmer Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Makes me wonder what a modern, rear engine dragster would look like with this front drive setup on it. I wondered about that too. This is what I came up with. It would have to be rear steer. The body work would create down force. It's pretty low on a long to-do list model wise. Hosted on Fotki
Draggon Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Clay Gratz did one not too long ago. http://drasticplastics.proboards.com/thread/4586/dual-hemi-dragster
rsxse240 Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 (edited) This is one of those cars that made people realize what NOT to do. all that weight out in front of the steering axle is just asking for trouble. Now, what I want to see is a 6 engine unlimited class tractor pull tractor on slicks at the drag strip! 6 9000hp top fuel V8s going at one time on pavement! do the math....54THOUSAND HORSEPOWER!!!!! Now THAT would be worth the tickets to see it run! Edited February 5, 2015 by rsxse240
Casey Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 4WD on a dragster? Ask Gary Gabelich how well that works.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015 Clay Gratz did one not too long ago. http://drasticplastics.proboards.com/thread/4586/dual-hemi-dragster Well, I'll be darned! Cool build!
Dragfreak Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 4WD on a dragster? Ask Gary Gabelich how well that works. Vega
Joe Handley Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 (edited) 4WD on a dragster? Ask Gary Gabelich how well that works. I don't know Casey, that particular car looks kinda sketchy under the body Edited February 5, 2015 by Joe Handley
Casey Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I don't know Casey, that particular car looks kinda sketchy under the body Yes, it was unstable to say the least, and Gabelich ended up in a hospital bed- "While four-wheel-drive had been tested – most famously and successfully on Tommy Ivo’s four-engine Showboat – it didn’t work for Gabelich, and the car was destroyed on its maiden outing at Orange County Int’l Raceway in early 1972, severely injuring the world’s fastest man in the process." http://www.nhra.com/blog/blog.aspx?BlogAlias=dragster-insider&BlogPostYear=2011&BlogPostMonth=12&BlogPostDay=6&BlogPostAlias=getting-our-rears-in-gear&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
