shoopdog Posted November 17, 2019 Posted November 17, 2019 Just saw The Big Boy running through Martin City, Mo. on its way to Union Station. Will try to link to video my wife took but for now here is a couple of pics. I was quite surprised that there was hundreds of people in the area to see it
DPNM Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 Good to see the old steamers still running. Nice you had the chance to see it up close and thanks for the post.
espo Posted November 18, 2019 Posted November 18, 2019 Love big steam engines. I'm of an age that I remember going to the train station every morning and evening to get my father when he was commuting into Chicago every day. The CNW (Chicago & North Western RR) was still using steam for commuter trains and hadn't completely converted to Diesel - Electric yet.

Jim N Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Union Pacific has the train on a countrywide tour to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Watched several You Tube videos last night since it rolled into our town last night. The crowds to see the train are impressive. Would have liked to have seen it this morning, but had too much to do at work.
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Pretty cool pix and vid. She's quite a machine. Glad to see there are lotsa folks who get it. Thanks.
Joe Handley Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 WHen it stopped here this past summer, that was the only time it was staying in one spot long enough for the public to see it and touch it here in Illinois. There were people from all over in town for those 4 days and probably more than doubled the normal population of the town (normally we're just over 27k, IIRC) and this town is not laid out for crowds like they had, especially at the railroad property they were using! They had to put together a parking and bus route for people to see it and had water and cooling tent, sales table, history cars made from old UP passenger cars, as well as local and UP's cops were on hand too. What impressed me the most was the range of people from all walks of life and of all ages there...all weekend long!

It was, I had been around diesels in that lot before, Dad spent time working there when he worked for C&NW, and a big as those looked to me as a kid, the BigBoy took me right back to that since it to me now, as an adult, as it is so much larger than the diesels that I had that same feeling looking at it as I did at diesels all those years ago.
