Monogram '66 Malibu SS

Speedpro

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite Monogram kits, I built one when they first came out, first issue. I built it just like on the box, black, flames, red interior. When I was done, I couldn't believe how nice a job I did, (I was ten, so it wasn't *that* nice, but to me it was perfect) the Testors gloss black laid down nicely over the black plastic, and Dad's red Krylon worked nicely on the interior too. I remember the smell - Monogram kits in the '70s had a unique smell when you opened the box, and their decals were always fool proof.

This might sound good but the hood/fenders are attached to the side frames but at a pivot point so the hood can tilt. If you move the firewall forward, The hood/fenders go with it. So then the pivot point becomes the area of needed adjustment. There is not enough room in the pivot slot on the side frame to make the difference and it would look hacked if you tried to elongate the slot so the hood/fenders could move back to the body. And the fender lips will still not line up. So what is the best way to deal with this? This is what i did......................

My thought is to remove enough material on the back of the hood/fender to move it back. By doing this it improved the centering of the wheel and tire in the wheel opening. It also fixed the fender lips lining up. I'm pretty happy with this but the hood scoop will need some work to get it to fit right. No big deal.

AWESOME.jpg.1da9a341f958e04fd4035795378ca5df.jpg so far...

Glad this worked out. Still going to work more on this area and fine tune a little more. Need to make some kind of stop for the hood/fender assembly so it won't just flop forward like it does.

This is like krazy kool to watch you finesse this wonderfully ol' body into shape!  Appreciate you, Brother!

Paul-  So good to see you on here! You are up to your usual high standards, fine tuning up a kit to make it all fit and snug. Paul is the first model builder that befriended me when I first starting building (as an adult) in the mid '80s. I took a couple of my (then crude) builds to a model show as part of a Goodguys Show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Washington state when we were living in that beautiful area of the country. Paul invited me to a club meeting, a then loose organization that later became the PSAMA (Puget Sound Auto Modelers Assn.). It was through that club Paul and I later met Kit Karson at a meeting a Scott Ridley's (another amazingly talented builder) place in Bremerton. Paul had built a 1937 Ford sedan (chopped, opening doors (and gas cap!)) that I was in awe of. Now it's almost forty years on and we've scattered around the country but we're all still playing with plastic! I learned a lot from both Paul and KK over the years....

Carry on! -RRR

I've got three of these still hiding in my stash. One Red, Two Black. For some reason, even knowing their faults, I can't let them go. Thanks, Paul for sharing your tricks for fixing the fit issues. I should dig one of these out. I always preferred the Red Car, but the Black one is the one you see for sale most often. They do share the same hood, but the scoops are very different. It shows how just changing a couple things (Scoop , Wheels) yield a much different look.

I can hardly wait to see what colour you pick for it.

The secret is finally out in the open!  That was an amazing time in modeling history!  Middle aged model car builders, from back in the day, that became life long friends via an addiction to plastic.  How great is that?!.  Real guys with their own set of skills that to this day consider themselves as just hacks.  Really!  Not a one, standing on a soap box, preaching the gospel of pruning parts from a sprue tree and the absolute's of glue.  Four internationally known nobodies sharing how we got to be where we are.  btw Scott has just been featured in an article in a modeling magazine in the Netherlands!  Go figure.  Oh, and RRR shared a few pages in MCM's #208 with me. -KK

RRR- Can't believe it's been 40 yrs. Had some great times with you and KK. At least i can see your work on both MCM and your fotki page. I have to tell you though, I don't think your builds back then were that crude. They were more i'd say excitingly different. You always bring something inspiring to the table. And your builds these day's are amazing. Miss hangin out and thanks for this little bio. Really got me thinking back back back in the day.

I'll be watching as well, I actually liked building this one but I made it stock to go with my 1/24 diecast collection. I used the chassis from the Monogram '64 GTO.

Been working on the front clip and getting it to fit. Took about 1/16 of an inch or a little more to get the front clip to fit and get the tire centered in the wheel arch. The hood scope was fitted by shaving the front edge to keep the carbs centered to the hood and glued in place. Took some Mr. White Putty and filled the big gaps. The rest of filling was done with super glue. Still working on the under side. I'v done a fair amount of mock up and found the front clip needs to be able to connect to the body and hold it self in place. I tried to mock it up using the tilt pivot off the back of the grill but never got good results. So to get the front clip to connect (or sit) on the body, I figured out where to put locating pins and using 100" solid rod made the pins and mounted them on the bottom side of the front clip. Now it just connects to the body and holds its self perfectly in place. I can't do anything else that has anything to do with mounting of the clip until it is painted and the grill is in place. Any mods needed will be done at that time. Here's a few progress pics........................

A few mods were done to the side frames and they were primed with tamiya surface primer. Also primed most of the parts.

Those racing buckets make that interior better than the stock seats. The way you modified the inner frame panels is absolute art!! All the mods and adjustments you have done so far makes me want to buy a couple of this kit and do it over again, and that’s saying something because I grew to hate this kit in my younger years because of the ill fitting front end. Thank you for the awesome inspiration!!!

Thank you Keith. I too built this kit a couple times in my younger days and also hated the way the front end fit among other things.

Worked on the underside of the front clip. This area needed some serious attention as this is what your looking at when its flipped forward. The area on both sides of the scoop is sanded down to get rid of the tabs that the scoop mounts too. Found this area gets pretty thin so be careful while sanding and handling the part. The area is taped off and mr. white putty is used to fill in around the scoop. Taping it of really saves alot of work here.

IMG_2130.thumb.JPG.9d0542213344e7d3805d821f84428138.JPG

Notice the long tabs are gone........

IMG_2133.thumb.JPG.46b939c2f4c515c399833fdc45bb0917.JPG

Putty was left to dry 1 day, Pulled the tape up and its ready to sand.

IMG_2135.thumb.JPG.fa52622aa93224746126d3a386b461d9.JPG

I sanded everything down getting real close to how i want the finished area to be. Then using tamiya extra thin cement i brushed it over the putty a couple of times to fill any small pores and help strengthen it. That shiny looking stuff is super glue to help fill in the line between the hood and scoop.

IMG_2137.thumb.JPG.fbea35ed68c5fe5e0b90f1e515102d96.JPG

Here it is all sanded. At least most of the underside. Still some more to do.

I am  really enjoying watching this come together! I have a serious thing for these old Monogram kits. It seems like they're all I ever build, anymore.😃 I love them, despite their shortcomings. My old friend, Mark Brown built his roll cages, that way. Said he couldn't stand seeing a model with the halo, hanging down in the window. I built one of these, years ago, too. I gave it to a friend, who has since died, unfortunately. I have a few not very good photos. I wouldn't build another one, without implementing some of the changes you've made. Those look like the same tires I used, as well! They fit the car,  nicely.  I also have a bunch of friends, up there, in the Flathead valley, and grew up just east of the park. Carry on! This baby's coming along, nicely!

Thanks Daniel. I too think the tires are the same ones you used on your build ( which is very nice looking by the way)...B.F. T/A's. Don't know if they are going to stay on the car. Just using them for mock up. I haven't been out here to long. Retired here 4 years ago.

Here are two more little items to deal with. The first one has to do with the interior bucket interfering with the firewall.

Here you can see the area that has been cut out on the interior bucket.

IMG_2148.thumb.JPG.9277d29898880a89eaee45213d4217af.JPG

This is where the firewall recess for the distributor will fit into, allowing the interior bucket to sit correctly in the body........

IMG_2151.thumb.JPG.c3424645c070aba4404c1824a90b7316.JPG

The other thing i wanted to address, also has to do with the interior bucket.

look at the top of the door at the wing window. You can see there is a gap that is about 1/8 of an inch between the top of the interior bucket and the wing window frame

IMG_2162.thumb.JPG.e7f21a5025adc9d6c06b1a7586c84ca1.JPG

IMG_2152.thumb.JPG.1fe1e663ea2f8c1e2e9f2aeb9aefc69d.JPG

What i did here is made a filler piece to fill the gap.

IMG_2158.thumb.JPG.4309c39817e26a74fde5bff3e4c0be1d.JPG

IMG_2160.thumb.JPG.ca2415513922c6ce26db005a945a6f4a.JPG

Finished with super glue and sand paper.................

IMG_2165.thumb.JPG.8f90f7656adcf52248cda7b9dce0739f.JPG

I'm running out of things to fit or correct. It might be time for some paint!

Thank you for looking and more to come..................
