On December 1st, I had an auto accident. A pickup was parked in front of me in a parking lot. The driver dropped the truck in reverse, and without looking, backed up. He did not stop until he was sitting on my hood. The hood, grill, front bumper cover, headlight bucket and even the passenger side front fender had damage. With all of this, I figured the car was a total loss since it's a 99 Lumina. About 2 weeks after the accident, the driver's insurance company tells me they need an estimate. Another week later, they tell me they want their estimator to look at the car. The adjusting company then tells me that they will fix the car, but will pay $600.00 less than the estimate they made me get. This caused a rather interesting discussion between me and the adjuster on how they can be that much lower than the repair shop when both estimates are using junkyard parts, etc. The adjuster finally tells me that he will call the repair shop and talk about the repair with them. A few hours later, I get a call back from the adjuster and he starts telling me how their estimator had built supplementals into their estimate, and after discussing the repair with my shop, they had to go to the high end of the supplementals because there was more damage under the hood and behind the bumper. In my previous employment, I spent more than 20 years as insurance regulator, so this all sounded real strange, but they were going to total the car. I very quickly decided not to argue the finer points about their estimate and how I thought they were trying to low ball me because the claim was now going the way I wanted. Finally, yesterday the check showed up from the insurance company and I can put this to bed. Getting the check pleases me as I did get more out of the total loss than I ever thought I would.
We were going to replace the Lumina next year after our youngest graduates from college, but I get the pleasure of making car payments about 18 months sooner than I wanted. My wife says things usually work out the way they do for a reason, so we will see how this one turns out. Any way there is a picture of the damage to my old car and then one of my new car. With the year end sales, we bought the new car before they took possession of the old car and we received the claim payment.
It was sad to see the old car ride off on the bed of the tow truck. It was a great old car, and I got rather attached to it after driving her for 18 years.
