Kinda supports the notion to build one half under a tarp and half covered in bird poop and dust with some of the motor parts missing!

Model car builders mindset list 2013
kalbert replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've never seen a new kit retail for $5 and I bought my first 1:24/5 about 1987 or so from a corner drugstore. I believe it was just just a bit over $6. My allowance at the time was $2/week and it took FOREVER to save enough money to buy it. Prior to that I had built several Monogram 1/32 snappers but was too young to recall how much they cost. -
Model car builders mindset list 2013
kalbert replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Perhaps a mindset list for guys entering retirement is needed too? It would include things like "Model kits are too darn expensive nowadays" and "Young people don't build models, they're too busy with their touch things" "Real modelers don't use aftermarket parts, they roll their own wires from thread and wax" and multiple variations of "The glory days are long over/The hobby is dying a slow death"! -
I'm pretty excited about this too! Any Duster conversions out there?

Looks awesome!

197? GMC Long Bed
kalbert replied to kalbert's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
While the kit wheel openings are a little wonky, on the 1:1 there is no difference between 2wd and 4x4. New pics are coming, dont give up yet! -
unless i missed it this thread is missing the Chevy Street Pickup from the Hot Rod series

Out Of Production Resin & Aftermarket Products
kalbert replied to Casey's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
What happens to the molds and masters when these companies go away? Are they held captive in a box in the caster's basement covered in dust? Or are the molds worn out and the masters lost/broken, and that's maybe a contributing factor to their demise? -
how to achieve these headlights gracefully?
kalbert replied to allecb's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Can you drill tiny holes in the housing behind the lens and mount a white LED behind it to shine through the tiny holes? -
Does the Fall Guy kit have the goofy panel lines on the bed sides too? What the heck is that supposed to be (besides a place to smear putty)?
-
Building one from strips and tape seems super tedious. Instead of getting a belt exactly the right size, Could you maybe get just one or two really long belts and cut them up into multiple blower belts? It might me more cost effective that way.

Don't get me wrong... I like the blue alot, but it's just not the same with out a big red STP logo on it!
-
That is interesting... I've not seen that happen either. Most importantly though... Is it still working? Did it strip the paint and leave the plastic?
-
Sweet! I'll have to check into that too!
-
Yes! I like the sound of that. Build it, but rob some of the go fast parts off, fade the paint a bit, throw a tarp over part of it. These wild pro-street cars will be barn survivors some day too!
-
I say build it. Kits are made to be built! Different paint job maybe, or super detail it, but don't leave it collecting dust in the box!!!

That's just the thing... A disclaimer on the ticket might protect NASCAR if they are sued, but it can't protect them from being sued, and it doesn't cover everybody who might be found "at fault". The case would still go to court and waste time and money, even if the ultimate decision is "The fan knew what they were getting into, and NASCAR stated clearly they were not responsible".

Again... Accidents happen, and every one is different, that's just how it is. You just can not ever predict every possible scenario and prevent it. You do the best you can to find middle ground between safe and fun and go with it. No one could have predicted the circumstances that lead to this event, and no amount of planning could have prevented it, short of not having a race at all. Hindsight is always 20/20. I'm sure the company that installed the fence will be on the hook, along with nascar, the folks that poured the concrete wall, the folks that installed seats that close, the folks that paved the track that would allow a car to lose grip, Good Year tires that loose grip, the company that built the frame of the car, Pepsi Cola for providing the fan a refreshment that they were drinking instead of watching the race and getting the hell out of the way... Where do you stop? Do you go after the guy who sold the gasoline to power the car the fan drove to the race since without the gas the fan would not have been there? How about the fan's employer who paid them a week's salary, which allowed them to buy a ticket?
-
The only way to "prevent" stuff like this is to not do it. I feel for the fans and drivers that got hurt, but they all knew the risk of sitting that close and going that fast. Stuff like this is rare, but it does happen. You can't predict it, control it, or prevent it. Everyone can't protected from every possible risk all the time, especially when doing risky things like having 50 yard line seats at a super speedway. No matter how fast the cars are, how tall the fence is, how high up the seats are, there's always a chance something bad will happen. Rare that a Days of Thunder quote is relevant to anything, but this one is spot on...

Nope, no particular hurry at all. Theres a few projects in line before this one. Keep me in mind when you do it, id be in for a few!
-
Feel like I'm asking a lot of obscure questions here, hope no one minds too much! Working on a project that needs a BW T5 transmission, and I'd rather not buy a whole Turbo Coupe kit to get one. Anyone aware of a resin T5 or something looks like a reasonable stand in? The lump of plastic with what I guess is supposed to be linkage rods that came in the MPC IROC-Z just won't do!

Stripped Chrome, Changed Mind
kalbert replied to kalbert's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I thought about BMFing it, but its a pretty complicated shape. Will BMF stretch and lay down nice? I suppose it would take more than once piece maybe, but then I wonder about seams... Alclad looks like a good option, but I'm sure it's not sold anywhere near me to be able to just get some, so I'd have to order it, and then wait... and wait... for it to arrive! Suppose there is anything at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby that would work? -
So I went nuts the other night and stripped the chrome off the grille for a 56 Ford F100. Now I'm regretting it and wishing to take it a different direction. What are my options to restore a chrome like finish?

Wow, that thing is super clean. I like it!

Revell 1957 Ford Custom & Revell 1957 Chevrolet 150 Together

I like how they are shiny, but not super glossy. Real authentic looking paint jobs on them!
