1967 Impala in Aclad II Holomatic Spectral Chrome
carl63_99 replied to carl63_99's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Second time I've done this paint. THEY say it holds up to masking. But one test body I did it striped right off when I tried masking tape. I plan to go very careful on the window trim masking. Also, I did use clear on the Porsche 918 and it really killed the prism effect, probably cutting it back 40% from uncleared. At this time, I'm not recommending clear. -
Do the usual body prep and prime. I used Duplicolor silver over that. Airbrushed three coats of the Alclad. Do NOT try to clearcoat, it will dull the rainbow effect. Then on to finishing the model. I have a Corvette ZR-1 engine that I've been looking for a home for ever since the car it was in got wrecked. It fits nice here. Then either creagers or 5-slot mags, haven't decided which just yet.

Before or after the tunnel?

Built back in 1997, took a bit of work to get the hood/nose right. But made a really nice looking model.

We should have done /reddit style and had a banana for size comparison! ha! Nice work!

Finished with intake update, interior refresh and a few other things that needed attention. Yes, the blower is from a modern Hemi, but it still looks good. Molotow Chrome paint was used on the blower ribs to highlight them. WIP pics show the updates to the interior, which included XJ-220 seats, '69 charger door handles and arm rests, as well as the center console. I would have gone pistol grip shifter, but as Murphy's law would have it, only AFTER I reinstalled the interior did I find it! New exhaust and some touch up on the bottom. I also ground out the taillights and added parts bin pieces to make them look more three-dimensional, as well as yellow turn signals and all three lights being actual lights. Now I can only hope I don't see something else I like and tear it apart again next year! WIP

Really nice work! I built the Corvette about 20 years ago. The Vette is almost exactly like the parts count for the 25th scale one, but some parts are photo-etch. Great little builds!

Al Bundy would be proud! Nice work!

She's sitting on her roof now, waiting for glue to take on new exhaust tips. Tomorrow, Under Glass, and I HOPE for the last time! Thanks all! -

I picked this one up last year and built it. Nice body, but the tires simply do not go with it. Would have been nice to have an engine too. Very basic kit. -
My California Street Vette, completed in 2000 and my 1969 Super Bee, first finished in 1997 and now getting interior and engine updates.

Bills72sj, that is a super nice looking job! Now that I'm looking, I may have to pull the bumble bee stripe and redo it. Back to Ebay! -
if you are working on this now, shouldn't it be in WIP, not Under glass?

Ordinarily, I wouldn't either. But this car has become my "Project X". I've changed wheels and tires more than a few times and after the last change I decided it was time to break it apart and do some needed fixed and updates. 24 years sitting on the shelf, although it sounds benign, actually does wear down a model car! -

Okay, forgot to take any pics of the interior before tearing it apart. Picture too shiny black on the seats and doors and really poor detail on the door cards. Suffice to say, new seats and color make the interior much nicer. -

I have been working on this project, just not as much free time as I'd like. I cut up the door cards from the '69 Charger and used the armrest/door handles and map pockets. Seats come from an XJ220 and I opened the shoulder area vents to run seat belts through. I'll mask off the floor to keep it black and go with a peanut butter color for most of the interior. I was not happy with the bumpers or taillights, so I got new ones. I opened up the taillights and put lenses in from my scrap bin. -
Porsche 918 by Revell in Holomatic Spectral Chrome
carl63_99 replied to carl63_99's topic in Model Cars
That's what it's supposed to look like. Think the cheap belts and handbags girls can get at the store. It will look different based on the base color. I used gloss black, but silver would give an interesting effect also. -
I used interior grade pine as it cuts easy and can be finished to any color you like.

Finished! First one this year, but I have been busy with other things. First thing I note is the Alclad holomatic spectral chrome is touchy stuff. You cannot polish it, clearcoat over it, or even handle it too much. It was much more dramatic before I put the clearcoat on, but still, it's okay. I also see the spray pattern across the nose section. It MUST be a very even coat to come out good. Probably next job I do will be much better. As for the kit, went together pretty good, sad to know the electric motors and the engine are buried deep inside all the rest of the work. they would have been nice to see. Enjoy!

Finished. Check out Under Glass.

It was a crappy kit. I tried to build it back in the 80's. You did a great job on it.- 12 replies

I may consider it someday. This is a quarter of my collection, all the rest are boxed up. Having to modify this one, I found the mirrors hard to find in an acceptable size, thus, two door mirrors on their sides. The plexiglass was $60 at Home Depot. I could probably do a slightly smaller one (20 cars) for around $100.

I got Govee lights, two 16 foot lengths on one controller, sticky back tape, $30 on Amazon. Lots of LED options out there!

About 35 years ago I built this shelf with my Dad. Pictures are probably up there somewhere. I've thought for years about updating it, wanting to add a mirror and a glass cover on the front to keep dust off my cars. A few months ago I decided to take the plunge and do it. I got a string of LED lights, plus the already mentioned stuff and updated it. Empty space is for my '69 R/T when I get the engine/upgrades done.
