So how's the weather where YOU are..?
Quick GMC replied to Ramfins59's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I'm in Palm Springs. I've lived in Florida, been to Phoenix, Death Valley, multiple parts of Texas all in the summer and I think Palm Springs is one of the hottest parts on the planet in the summer. What most people think is it's a dry heat. Not anymore. For the past ten years humidity has been rising Last year, two days in a row, it was 118 with 70%+ humidity. It's brutal. -

My NEW space...

Looks good. I flipped out today and started gutting my room. It's a hobby/guest room. I emptied everything and will be done tomorrow, new bench. So nice when you freshly organize everything. -
The Best Car Ever Tested?

Uhh..ever heard of Palm Springs? I live here. It's at least 115 every summer and they keep adding wind mills. Lowest it gets is probably low 40's. MAYBE high 30's. I never bothered to count. They get bigger every time. The newer ones are monitored and the angles of the turbine blades or the entire motor assemblies are adjusted to put them in the most direct path of air, to make them as efficient as possible. Colder air is denser, don't you think that would move something more than hot air? I don't think it really matters with something as large as a turbine in an open area like a desert. -
That sounds brutal, I'm sorry.

The Best Car Ever Tested?

The components used to make the motors and batteries for electric and hybrids are precious metals. The equipment used to acquire this stuff is doing damage. Iridium platinum, etc. They already use platinum as a catalyst for catalytic converters, along with rhodium but if small amounts. I wonder what would happen to the earth's precious metal ore when electric cars are manufactured on a similar scale that gasoline powered cars are. Not to mention the machines used to extract and process the metals. -

Atomic Buffalo Turds 1. Jalapenos cut in half long ways. Scoop out the seeds and membrane. Or eave them in if you like it hot 2. Fill Jalapeno halves with cream cheese 3. Place a Lil' Smokie sausage in each Jalapeno half 4. Wrap in a full piece of bacon 5. Season with whatever you like, I use pork or beef rub 6. Smoke for one hour. You can adjust the heat by how much of the membrane you leave in. If you scrape it all out, it is not spicy whatsoever. My wife can't even eat ketchup because she thinks it's spicy, but she'll eat these. Here they are going on

Lacquer VS. Enamel OR Zero VS. Scale Finishes
Quick GMC replied to Quick GMC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I don't mind sanding, but I always have to start with 3200 grit, sometimes 1500 Tamiya. It's just too much. If I could go 4000 lightly and up from there, I'd be perfectly content with that. -
As a truck guy, that sounds insane. But sometimes the Mopar muscles look the same to me I hate the F150's but their Super Duty's are killer looking. I'd like to build a work fleet of trucks like we have at work. a few 2500 flatbeads, a 2500 van, 4500 stake bed. The new Rams are just chiseled. The rear bumper cutout for the exhaust is super clean.

mom and pop vs. big hobby shop
Quick GMC replied to Q tip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Luckily, the only place in town is a mom and pop. One of the guys that works there is a friend of mine. His uncle owned Hobby Town. The local shop was terrible, terrible employees, stocked all the wrong things, etc. Friend's uncle closes Hobby Town and moves back to Tennesse where he has another store. Friend takes off to Hawaii for 5 years and I'm stuck with this crappy place or the internet. Friend comes back, gets job at local shop, they fire one guy and hire a couple more, the owner gets a lot of good input from his new employees. business ramps up, more good stuff in stock and they end up growing out of their unit. Now they are double the size, ALWAYS busy with great employees. I feel very lucky. I will happily pay more and drive over there to buy anything they can get. While I believe it was the employees were significantly responsible for their knowledge of what people want, it takes a good business owner to take input from his employees and allow them to control and adjust inventory. The owner is a train specialist, they have one dedicated flight guy, two very knowledgeable rc car guys and a couple others that are pretty good all around. Sometimes I get to tell them what models to stock, some of the frequent locals can just walk behind the counter, grab what they need, install it on their car then pay. it's a great feeling place. -
Just curious. I'm a little bummed they don't make he newer style pickup trucks. I have an 06 Sierra, different front end than the Chevy, and both of those changed in 03. So 99-07 had 3 different front ends. Now there's the newest body style. The F150 is a big one too, not to mention as a Chevy and Ford guy, the new Ram trucks are sexy. Sprinter vans, work trucks etc, Molds are very expensive, no doubt. I would think they would do one or two though. Just curious what percentage of people would buy these up? also, I can't wait until the first order-anything-you-want 3D-print-per-order model company comes out. Order up your make and model, have in printed and off you go.

Forgive me for saying this, but the wheels/tires look a bit too big. The entire build is awesome though. The hood turned out great. -
Lacquer VS. Enamel OR Zero VS. Scale Finishes
Quick GMC replied to Quick GMC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This is why it's so frustrating. I sand my primer. I sand my paint. Clear is still textured. I tried 12 psi, 30 psi, .3mm, .5mm no thinner, little thinner, a lot of thinner. I'm going to order some Scale finishes soon. I'm hoping the enamel will be better as it will have more time to settle out into a flat finish before hardening, like the lacquer. -
Dispelling Modeling Myths
Quick GMC replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the difference, at least what it appears to me, is that Alclad has the reflection of chrome, but not the brightness, if that makes sense. I can see myself in a piece that is sprayed with Alclad, but when in the sun, chrome will have those blinding, glaring bright spots where the sun hits. Alclad will shine, have a reflection, but not the brightness or glare you get from chrome does that make sense? I think I confused myself. -

Dispelling Modeling Myths
Quick GMC replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
1. Alclad is tough on the finish, but a lot of handling and it will rub off. Handling with latex gloves will eliminate any issues. 2. Backside of razor blade, but I sand it with a coarse sanding stick first. Make a super sharp point that won't run off the line. 3. Still trying to figure this one out.
