Testing a bad engine computer, and its symptoms?
Quick GMC replied to charlie8575's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
When exactly does the stalling happen, or did I miss that? I diagnosed a stalling issue on two vehicles due to the torque converter not coming out of lockup when slowing down for a red light. Come to a stop and it would stall intermittenly, but when it happend it was always coming to a stop. A car and a truck, both GM. -
I exaggerated the amount of time. There is a madated data storage like you mentioned for airbag or other SRS system deployments. When I was with Jaguar, at any given time, we could view the last 10? seconds of of data, not just when there was an airbag deployment. There are aftermarket tuning programs for some manufacturers that let you data log and stuff. There are ways to get the info out of the car. 3 seconds is not long enough IMO, that could just show braking application and not reveal the full story. Throttle position, gear position, etc. a friend of mine in high school got caught this way, this was in 2000 I think. His dad bought him an Integra GSR. He blew the motor. Swore up and down it wasn't his fault. Shop pulled the data and showed something like 100% throttle going from 1st to second, but second never engaged. He basically revved out and blew the motor. These things are tremendously helpful is assigning blame or clearing someones name. I really hope they determine that this was just a freak accident and not the result of someone being careless. Although going that fast in an industrial park isn't very intelligent.

I refinish, repair and polish marble floors. Granite, limestone, etc. anything with stone, we do it.

There is some sort of black box on all newer cars. You can plug into the computer and pull the last 5-10 minutes of data. Throttle position, brake pedal application percentage, etc. As long as the PSM is not ruined, they can find out exactly what was going on.

The truck has been solid. It's definitely not a lemon. Trans 1- I built halfway. The weak link in these Is the output shaft. That broke. Trans 2- a rebuild I bought that was not done the way they said it was done Trans 3- build was good but the torque converter fell apart and ruined the rest of the tranny. I'm definitely going to be taking it easy. I need to make sure it's reliable so I can drive my kid around. I'm 30, so if I keep working hard I hope to have an opportunity to build something in the future. I wouldn't mind an old 41 plymouth or something. Time to grow up...for now

I have a 2006 GMC pickup. About 7 years ago when it had 20k on the clock, I decided to start messing with it. 3k stall converter, shift kit, headers, intake, exhuast, tune, etc. Lasted about 40k before the output shaft grenaded and took out the entire trans, literally. I threw the whole thing in the dumpster. Went with a reman that was supposedly freshened up. That lasted 4 months before the clutches went out. Tore it open only to find an old, worn tranny that had the case painted. I gutted it, cleaned out the case, replaced everything with upgraded parts wherever I could. Billet output shaft, Borg warner clutches, Koleen steels, Sonnax servos, pinless accumulators, GM 5 pinion planets, the whole 9 yards. Sent the converter back out to get cut and cleaned, new clutch disc. I rebuilt the tranny myself in my garage. Took a while. I would wake up in the middle of the night and go remove the pump to make sure I put the band in, etc. Finally got it going. Solid as hell. got 10k on the clock and there it goes again. I thought I was off on some of the tolerances or something. My dad is giving me heck, my wife is pissed. I send it out to a highly reputable trans builder to have them do the teardown to identify what I did wrong. NOTHING! Got a call today. The $900 converter let go and sent metal through the case and ruined just about everything. My build was good. So here we are, an accumulative of $7k into my tranny now for an F'in daily driver pickup. It's a quick truck for what it is, but I have a baby on the way and I suppose it's time to settle it down for a bit. I'm going to retune it get it a little closer to stock for now. It wouldn't be fun if you never had to work on it though, right?

that's pretty vague. How about some details? Do you get an error message, does it just time out or what?

Not even remotely the same thing. We don't know if he did this not caring, or just simply plugged it in without thinking of the drawbacks. I could see myself doing something like this. Not now that this story is making the rounds, but nobody ever accidentally siphoned gas without really thinking about what they were doing. His punishment is absurd. I don't think it's no bog deal, it's technically stealing, but c'mon. I suppose the good thing to come out of this is they are making an example out of him, so I would assume it would draw enough attention to let other electric car owners to pay attention to what htey are doing.

The surveillance video does not show the car at all. It shows the dust kicked up from the impact. You can't see the car, but from how fast/mcuh the dirt was stirred up it's obvious they were moving pretty fast. You don't see any indication of any other cars or any cars pass further down the road. I would be surprised if there was anyone else involved. It seems like they were just hauling balls and lost traction and that was the end of that. Tragic, I respected that guy a lot for what he did off the screen. edit: Here is the video

Parachuting dead mice. What will they think of next?
Quick GMC replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
because parachuting stuff is awesome. Didn't you have the little parachuting army men as a kid? I remember jumping off my friends roof with a pillow case when we were about 6-7. I really don't know how we didn't kill ourselves. -
$250,000 for a Mustang knockoff?
Quick GMC replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
why is everyone up in arms about the Chevy engine? how long have people been stuffing 350s in Model A's? Not to mention the Chevy LS based engines are pretty wide open for options (not that the mod motors aren't) and you can get power out of them for less than you can the ford DOHC motors. As a lifelong Mustang fan, I think this looks better than the original. This is a bad A looking car. $250K is probably what you'd spend on an original and a frame-up restoration. I'm only guessing, someone correct me if I'm wrong. If I was in the market, I'd definitely be looking at one of these. Sadly, I doubt I'll ever be able to buy toys on this level. I hope it does well, it's a good looking machine with a solid powerplant. -
2015 Mustang link
Quick GMC replied to 1930fordpickup's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The best thing about this is I might be able to afford a 2013 GT with Brembos sometime in the near future. The new car does look good though. Kind of reminds me of the body lines of the Toyota 86 a little. Kinda swoopy, like the Mach 1 days. -
How is it less visible? Also, I would like the next cop that pulls me over to just go ahead and give me a warning instead of a ticket. My business ships packages to Canada a lot, you guys get screwed on a lot of stuff. I ship tools and supplies and the duties and fees end up making it usually 1.5 times or more the actual cost of the tool, not including the shipping.

SSD (Solid State) Hard drives for computers
Quick GMC replied to Quick GMC's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I got a 2TB external drive to go with it. I dump everything on the computer, then about once a week, I organize and transfer everything to the external, and also the 1TB drive at my house. I hate losing files. -
Airborne Semi Bursts Into Flames
Quick GMC replied to Marcus M. Jones's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There is no doom and gloom, they were okay. -
I'm not a computer enthusiast, but a good friend is. I recently had him build me a desktop and coincidentally my laptop dumped it's hard drive aroun the same time. The desktop and laptop both got SSD's. I just wanted to give the guys a heads up that aren't familiar with these. Holy mother of speed. The computers will restart in about 17 seconds. You can get 500gb and 1tb, but they are more expensive. I am using a 128gb in my destop just for startup and key programs and a 250gb in my laptop. I use a lot of heavy programs like Adobe and Autodesk programs and it helps tremendously with bootup. Also data transfer is lightning fast. just putting it out there for you guys that are looking for more speed in that department. I got my Samsung 250GB SSD for about $150 and it took 10 minutes to install.

Russian dash-cams
Quick GMC replied to charlie8575's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Russian dashcams are due to the rampant insurance fraud. Pedestrians throw themselves at cars. You can find videos of people diving on car hoods, etc. I'm not sure how you decided that the majority of Russians are alcoholics. That's like saying the majority of Americans in the South are inbred retards. -

Stupid things we do.
Quick GMC replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The only model I have ever finished 100%, the 67 Chevelle. Really nice paint job, even put the mirrors and hood on. I was installing a shlf above my new bench. Of course I dropped it, it sandwiched the model and a bunch of parts exploded out of it. The paint is okay, but the wheels, shocks, engine parts etc. went flying. It's in a box. I tihink I'd rather start over with a fresh kit than fix this one. -
