AMT 1929 Ford A Roadster "Mod Rod"
Richard Bartrop replied to Junkman's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I think I can say with confidence that I will never get that nostalgic. -
Vintage 1946 Monogram streamliner kit
Richard Bartrop replied to Scott Colmer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
makes you wonder if this got the wheels turning on a young art Arfons or Craig Breedlove. -
Pins from AMT 50th Anniversary
Richard Bartrop replied to DumpyDan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So it looks like AMT's 75th is happening the year after next. Something for the folks at Round 2 to think about. -
A very nice idea for a kit
Richard Bartrop replied to aurfalien's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hoax or not, it would still make a cool looking model, -
Road King
Richard Bartrop replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It is called the Road King, and the idea was to make a self contained cargo hauler that didn't need a separate tractor. THe link in the first post has more info, and here's an earlier six wheel version. A little more background info http://theoldmotor.com/?p=138179 Scott, I love retrofuture design, so I'm hoping you'll go ahead with your idea. -
This would make an interesting model An attempt to eliminate the need for a separate tractor. More info here http://theoldmotor.com/?p=173096

Terrible Box Art
Richard Bartrop replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not in the least, but it you have to admit knowing the kit bears at least some passing resemblance to what it's supposed to be is a good thing. Besides, if even a professional model builder can't make it look good, then maybe it's best to walk away. -
Terrible Box Art
Richard Bartrop replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Economics were certainly a factor. Hire an artist vs have someone snap a photo. And we bought these kits anyhow, so really, why spend money when you don't have to? Also, let's not forget how many horrible kits those pretty box paintings suckered us into buying, so maybe it's not that surprising that people wanted to see what they were getting into. It's almost like some people have now decided that being played for a fool was an essential part of the modelling experience. -
The future of offroading?
Richard Bartrop replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
But at least it's a functional looking sort of ugly. -
Terrible Box Art
Richard Bartrop replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The GTO is a good example of of a box doing it's job. Honestly, I'd rather the companies put their efforts into what's in the box. -
Buying a compressor
Richard Bartrop replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Another benefit of a tank it that it smooths out the airflow. Without it, it comes in pulses. This is mostly a big deal if you're trying to do anything fancy with your airbrush. -

I have a Paasche D3000R, and I like it so far. It comes with a tank and pressure regulator, is compact, and quiet. -

If this clown thinks it feel like a slap in the face, then, good, because he could use one. -
Some talk on car movies.

And then there's the Amazing Stories episode "Gather ye Acorns" , which speaks to car nuts and collectors alike. -
Modelhaus Offical Update/SA
Richard Bartrop replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Give it enough time, it all becomes collectible. A '70s sedan in the '70s was just about the most boring thing ever. Now, it's an artifact from a vanished age, and it stands out like a dinosaur in your back yard. -
Modelhaus Offical Update/SA
Richard Bartrop replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
WWII was the biggest and bloodiest war humanity has ever seen, and it's always been presented as an epic struggle between the forces of good, and the forces of evil. It set in motion forces that are still impacting our lives today, so maybe it's not that surprising that it still figures large in the imagination of military modelers. Compared to that, most automotive history looks like pretty small potatoes. -
Revell '29 Roadster, Late '50s Style
Richard Bartrop replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in WIP: Model Cars
The grille from MCG arrived, and I think it will do just fine. The inner rims are from the AMT '29, thinned down so they'll look a little more realistic, and so the brake drums will sit deeper inside the wheel. The inner rims were given a chrome finish with the Molotow pen, and glued to the brake drums, giving a secure attachment point for the tires, and eliminates the need to handle the rims. I did have to trim the ends off the coupe dash so that the windshield would fit, but aside from that, the top of the dash fit the bottom of the windshield perfectly. I'm debating whether or not to trim the windshield a little more. -
Of those three, the Power Wagon would be the one I'd be interested in.

Engine sources
Richard Bartrop replied to RadialDragon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you're still looking for a MEL engine, would the one in the recently rereleased AMT Edsel kit do? -
The pickup has my attention, and the Eagle is one of my favourite Movie/TV spaceships.

Chevy's new IC truck is no beauty either. I like Bollinger's take on an electric truck. It's not pretty, but it's not trying to be. -
Modelhaus Offical Update/SA
Richard Bartrop replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I tend to see the "Not my style but" comments as encouraging. It means you managed to build something that impressed them despite their particular biases. I like seeing a little variety here. This group does a little, well, insular, and some people could use a little reminding that their interests aren't the alpha and omega of the hobby. -

Commercial failures becoming hot collectibles? When has that ever happened? A look at Hemmings shows Tabants nudging the $10K mark, and those make Yugos look downright luxurious. Here's a military version of the Trabant going for 13000 Euros, or not quite $15000 US https://www.classic-trader.com/uk/cars/listing/trabant/601-kuebel/601-a/1967/90229
