  1. I did get The Boot Hill Express when it first came out. It's long gone, but when it reappeared on the shelves recently, I did get another.
  2. I'm building some more Jo-han Cadillac V-16s, and a Monogram Duesenberg is on the build pile, though I'm not doing them exactly the way I did the first time. I have a couple from back in the day I want to do over, but I don't see it so much trying to duplicate the past as to do it right. The first time I saw this in Automobile Quarterly, I feel in love, and I wanted to build a model of it. Now, it turned out all right, and the pieces for the model still exist, but over the years i've been collecting the pieces for a new version. This time, I managed to track down a proper '31 Packard kit off eBay at a reasonable price, where before, Monogram's '30 Packard as the only game in town. Evergreen styrene instead of scrounging for bits of cardboard and plastic packaging, airbrush instead of brush painting, and years of experience that I didn't have back then. Sometimes it's not about recapturing the past, but getting it closer to what you had in mind in the first place.
  3. I always thought this generation of Camaro was by far the best looking of the bunch. I like what you're doing with it.
  4. The military section is a great source for upholstery colours. They have a who range of not quite whites that are ideal for making a more authentic looking convertible top. If you don't mind a little polishing, the Sky Type S that the British used for the underside of their planes is a good match for the light gray green found on some early postwar cars.
  5. I've had success using the styrene and solvent technique for tiny stuff like taillights, and using heavy aluminum foil for the mould.
  6. It looks like Atlantis got their 1/48 White tanker.
  7. In the military colours, the red-brown The Germans used on their tanks in WW2 is pretty close. As far as brands, I like Humbrol.
  8. If you really want to get pedantic about it, "engine" has traditionally refered to any sort of mechanical device, such as a seige engine, Babbage's Difference Engine, or a rose engine. Motor refers to a device that imparts motion, such as the devices we're discussing in this thread. In modern use "engine" and "motor' are interchangeable, and most people get what you're talking about.
  9. I built an armoured Fowler steam tractor in 1/35 a few years back. Defintiely going to be following this one
  10. Of course gold doesn't tarnish, but of course they don't use real gold in the paint. I'm going to guess it's brass.
  11. Copper and gold paint will tarnish. I've painted things copper that ended up with greenish fingerprints all over it before I wised up about clearcoats.
  12. The secret to making bezels out of tubing is to cut them longer than you need, and then run them over sandpaper until you have a ring of the desired thickness.
  13. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_partsdrawings_links.htm A gold mine of reference material on flathead Ford V-8s and chassis parts.
  14. Nicely done. We could use more fancy French coachwork.
  15. 1967 has the Jaguar E-type, the Lamborghini Miura, the Buick Riviera.... 1967 has a bumper crop of attractive cars. You say you like race cars, but that covers a lot of territory. If you want unusual, I think Tamiya's 1/12 Honda F1 car is a '67, and of course there's the STP turbine Indy car. Heller did a Alpine A110.
  16. The how too topics are in a much better place now.
  17. And it turns out there is a full resin kit of a Ghibli by SMP 24 https://www.scalemates.com/kits/996168-smp-24-07-maserati-ghibli The few that show up on eBay look to be in the neighbourhood of $300
  18. We all have our pet peeves, but there's no need to go into supervillain mode. Just because it says the paint is for military models, it doesn't mean you can't use them for cars. All those flat colours are great for upholstery, and I've always found Humbrol's range of flat not quite whites to be just the thing for making a realistic looking convertible top. Besides, seeing how the military stuff takes up anywhere from half to 2/3 the kits in the shops I frequent, I'm going to say from a kitmaker's standpoint, their money is just as good. Now as for what kinds of cars to do? Obviously, licenses are going to be an issue, but I think the emphasis should be on emotion. Never mind what sold the most, what are the cars that make people go "Wow, I don't care if it's practical or not, I want one!"? A few exotics and concept cars should be in the mix, and the Japanese certainly seem to have done well with this approach. I'd look into getting the rights to do the new Chiron, the McLarens and the Koenigsegg. Some people have dumped on the Devalli, and sure, it's probably vapourware, but it looks like a giant Hot Wheels, and for that reason, I think it would do well with the younger crowd. Definitely see if I could sweet talk GM into letting Revell do the new mid engined Corvette, and I would be looking to see if I could make the numbers work for a large scale Easy click version of either that, or the new Ford GT. Yes, trucks would be part of the mix. They're not just tools anymore, they're fashion statements, and people aspire to own them, so some of the big luxo-pickups might be good kit material, and you could market it as an exotic piece of Americana outside of the US.
  19. Sorry, when I said "the company," I meant Iso
  20. Airfix did a 1/32 Ghibli, but I could go for that too. That is a good question. How bad is Maserati about licensing? The comnpany is gone, but I suppose it would depend on who had the rights to the name now, and how reasonable they are willing to be.
  21. Thanks, but these will do me for now.
  22. I've always had a very high regard for Tamiya's Formula One kits, and I have a special fondness for the pre airfoil cars. so I was wondering which ones they've done. The 1/12 scale kits are very nice, but they also eat up dollars and shelf space, so I'm focusing on the 1/20 scale kits for now. I know they did a Lotus 25 and a Honda RA272 from that era, but that's all I can think of right now. Did Tamiya do anything else from this era at this scale?
  23. I figured as as much. Looks like Revell is doing a lot of ICM stuff
  24. I had been looking at the ICM version. Thanks for the heads up.
  25. I'd take that over 95% of what I keep being told "the market" really wants.
