Looks like a lots of mods on top of just adding a Nomad roof. Whatever they did, it works. -
Pininfarina Battista
Richard Bartrop replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I thought it was classic Pininfarina. It doesn't necessarily shout "Hey, look at me!" but everything is in just the right place. We've already had way too much godawful styling that tries way too hard to be "distinctive". If we're getting a return to stylists who know what line and proportion is about, then you know what you can do with "distinctive" If every car on the road looked like this, I would be okay with it. -
My first thought was an Isotta-Fraschini 8C, then maybe some other Castagna design. I knew it was some early postwar Italian design, so I ended up going through all the Italian coachbuilders on Coachbuilt.com until I hit the jackpot.

My inclination would be to lean the original lights, and maybe get rid of the chrome rings if you want to clean things up.

Pininfarina doing it's bit to make electric cars sexy. Apparently the plan is to produce it under their own name.

I think those tailfins need something on them. Maybe shaving off that fake spare tire, or going the other way, and making it an actual spare tire like on some of the Exner era concept cars?

Mold release?
Richard Bartrop replied to Brandon Miller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Diluted dish soap seems to work well on silicone rubber. -
Gasoline Alley hosted a display for the local model clubs this past Family Day weekend, so I took the opportunity to snap some pics of this Brush runabout for its unusual suspension. It has coil springs, but unlike a modern car, they' work in tension, rather than compression. Also interesting is how the friction type shocks also locate the axles.

The Red Devil - Jo-han Cadillac Sport Phaeton
Richard Bartrop replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks to a generous donation of Monogram tires from Eric Macleod, it's now up on all four wheels. Here's the chassis on display at Modelmania during the Family Day weekend. I glued together 16 thin styrene rods together, and formed them into the bundle of ignition wires. -
Oh, they followed tends back then, and there's no shortage of distinctive designs today that show distinctiveness is highly overrated. I will say that while '50s designs weren't always pretty, you could never accuse them of being boring.

I don't want to think about what some of the ones I don't have are going for now. The paint and chrome are still good, and I did a decent job on them the first time, so that's the plan. I also like building stock, so they're staying that way. I think I might foil the trim on the T-Bird that I originally painted silver. My absolute favourite American car designs from the '60s are the first gen Toronado and the second gen Riviera, but there's lots of good stuff in that decade. I still like the Marlin, though I still think it would have looked better if they had based it on the Rambler American as originally intended.

I like where you're going with this. There's a distinct vintage Alfa Romeo look to it.

I actually got these a couple of months back, but I finally got around to taking some pictures. This, I picked up at my LHS. It was cheaper than most of the Round 2 reissues. I went home for Christmas for the first time in ages, and found most of my old models were still there, though in various states of repair, so I took a few boxes back with me. I'm thinking just repair and cleanup for some. I think I have most of the parts for this Jo-Han Marlin, but I should be able to hunt them down one way or another.

I find things like the Convair Shuttlecraft way cooler than the Star Trek and Star Wars models, because this was about people trying to design real spaceships.

Plastruct has some very thin styrene rod that is the right diameter for spark plug wire.

For the past 60 odd years, the hobby has been about gluing together pre formed plastic parts, and despite the initial handwringing over instant gratification, here we are and we generally seem to be okay with it. Do you really think it's going to make that much difference to the "essence" of the hobby if the preformed plastic parts you glue together come out of a printer, or from a mould somewhere in China?

Monogram Slingshot, Anyone?
Richard Bartrop replied to Straightliner59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like you could get pretty close to Sidney Allard's first dragster as well. -
I remember discovering them at the same time (early 70s) the LHS was getting rid of them for 50 cent s a pop. I wish I'd gotten more

If it's the one I think, it was also kitted by MPC as part of its European Racing series, and it's 1/32. I built one many years ago, and from what I can recall, it's curbside, but it's also very nicely detailed.

Congratulations! That kit is a beast.

I didn't even notice the watermark, so I guess I'm an even bigger idiot.
