KW W900 and flatbed trailer [first builds]
tbill replied to tbill's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
two more -
well, I did it, I managed to complete my first truck and trailer after a loooong hiatus from building. pic's are from my cell phone, but man was I pleased with the way it looked out in the sun! sure, it's not perfect, and I see about 6 million flaws in it, BUT, as it's my first go at it, I am pleased with the results. so without further blabbing from me, here ya go...

all I can say is I had a good trip there, plus it was only 20 minutes from where I was staying, so it was a win/win for me. -

agree with everyone else, fantastic build! -
well, I had to go out to Buffalo NY for training for work [chevy dealer] this week. I drove out yesterday afternoon. a few days before I left, I e-mailed Fred of Fred's Model World [ fredsmodelworldonline.com ]and told him I'd be in the area Wednesday, and would it be possible to stop over and look at some kits. he was kind enough to make plans with me to meet up while I was out there. so, Wednesday night I went over and took a look at what he had 'in stock', it was happy time for me had a lot of real cool stuff, and for a fresh change of pace, he had very, and I mean very, realistic prices. I picked up a few kits, and to be honest, if I would have had more money with me, i'd of bought more, but i'm sure I will be out there again in the future for work. here is what I picked up, check out his site, and if you're looking for something, give him a call. if I remember right, he said in December he would be getting quite a few more truck kits in. I know as of wed night he had a few different truck kits left, and some trailers [older amt stuff]. I know this isn't really the spot to post this, but as it's mostly truck related, I thought it best so you truckers would be sure to see it. ~tbill

if memory serves, the interiors on those came in many colors [black, blue, red, gray], dash would be same color as rest of interior, and the instrument housing I think was either black, or silver/gray. I think, as it's been awhile since I have worked on one.

ok, almost done with this complex build, lol. crappy cell phone pic's with poor lighting, but you'll get the idea. the landing gear is temporary, going to use the short 'feet' once I have a truck completed. all I have left to do are a few touch ups, and mud flap decals. i'm happy with it overall, first build in a long time, and it came out pretty decent. -
welcome, lot of people from NY here

I bought an artograph booth, about $300, but it's big, light weight, and filters like a mo-fo, I don't even have to exhaust it outside.

yes, I definitely did it all wrong as it were, lol. when I started this I had half a thought about the panel lines and potential issues, but as it was my first body paint job, I armed myself with half the pertinent info and gave it a go. I think I may have this one halfway salvaged, it will serve as my benchmark I suppose, with the info offered here, and on the site in general, I feel the next one will be significantly better. thanks again for all the input.

thanks for the tips and link. I went with the white primer thinking it would help keep the blue it's more 'natural' color [if that makes sense], guess I was trying to over think it. I cleared it yesterday, then put it in the dehydrator for about 4 hours. I picked up a kit of those micro sanding pads and sanded the clear today. after sanding it, with water sheeting on it, the orange peel is about gone, I think if I get it polished out, i'll be pleased with the result. as usual, learning as I go........ thanks again for the help.

well done, that's gorgeous[sp?] -
hit hobby lobby and got a bunch of stuff. more brushes, some 'bottle' paint, some rattle can paint, a 65 Malibu wagon [on clearance, and still kinda pricey], sand paper, micro polish pad set, and a new lamp with a magnifying glass in it [what can I say, i'm getting old and can't see these tiny parts as well as I used to].

KW W900 [done 10-12-13]
tbill replied to tbill's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
well, I cleared it this morning, hood looks real good, didn't have much orange peel in that to start with. i'm hoping I got enough clear on the cab so I can try to flatten it out. I happened to go to hobby lobby today and picked up a micro polish pad set. the parts are currently in the dehydrator, so tomorrow i'm going to try to sand/polish it out and see what happens. -
ok, you schooled me on dashes, now how bout on exhaust manifolds?? holy cow that looks real! rest of the build is pretty sweet too!!
-
thanks. I stripped it and started over. couple light coats, then a heavier one. have a lot of orange peel, but that'll be easier to fix than the first mess I ended up with. I suppose given I haven't painted a model in forever, my second attempt on this body isn't too bad. nowhere to go but up from here.

well, I had my first experience with the 'pond' [in my case, green], had to remove all evidence of my first failure after some soaking and scrubbing, I almost had it clean, I finally got it back to square one, but now I need some more help here is where I am at now, now, my question is this [well, one of them anyway], see the sleeper door panel lines, they are way more white in person, what causes this? the cab door lines look ok, but the sleeper lines don't, is this due to them being deeper? or did I just not get enough paint in there? or should I scribe and blackwash to help avoid this in future? also, pic of the rear of cab is to highlight my 'peel', what are my options here as far as smoothing it out? should I clear it, then sand that, or color sand this, then clear? or say good enough for my second first paint job and do better on the next one? as always, thanks for reading.
