Mack R model and logging trailer
tbill replied to tbill's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Anthony, thanks, guess I just need to take my measurements and hit one of the actual hobby shops around here, get some stuff and start messing around with it. now, on to todays update, got some engine work done. still have a ways to go, have some other parts painted up, and as I mentioned before, I wanted to break up the gold some, so I picked my own colors for stuff. love it or hate it, I like a lot of color, lol. as always, thanks for reading, and for the help/suggestions/comments. -
yes, looks great so far, we all know after a few good NY winters and that could be a two year old trailer looking like that.

thanks, I have been watching your project as well, your doing a great job so far, you however are way outside of the box compared to me, lol, I only need to pull off a small frame extention and it has me a bit flummoxed, can't imagine what's going thru your mind.... -

Anthony, thanks for the reference pic's, Jim B has also loaded me up with some good pic's of the frame extensions to make it look right. my only concern so far is, I used my calipers to measure the kits frame rails, and it looks as though they are rather small compared to the evergreen/plastruct[sp?] that's out there, any suggestions on this? i'm just back into modeling, so scratch build anything is new to me. I looked thru some other kits I have thinking I could rob some frame rail out of something, but all of them are way bigger [other than the other mack model I have, but don't want to kill that kit for a little bit of frame]. any thoughts? -
looks great so far, great job on adding 2 more doors. my first real car [as in something I really drove, at 17] was a 71 chevelle 2 door in about the same color with an antique jade green interior and vinyl top. boy I miss that car...

john, I just today glued my frame together, lm still undecided as to how im going to lengthen it. not sure if I want to make a box extension, or try doing a tube type triangulated extension. will be my first attempt at actually making something, so not sure how I want to try it. -

I have been remiss in my attitude towards tires I need to start scuffing them to atleast remove the mold lines. the wheels were molded in white, and I primed and painted them. from what I hear, easy off or the degreaser [purple power and the like] will strip chrome as well as paint. I dull coated the engine and it knocked the sheen down considerably, I like it way better now. trans is painted now as well, did a color experiment, will post pic's when it's dry if I like the result. and again, thanks for the kind words and suggestions. -

slowly [very slowly] i'm making progress. almost no bench time last week, but I am getting some work done today needs some touch up, but progress. also started on the engine assm. today and have it in color. I've looked at a bunch of photo's and they all look like one complete color for the most part, but as this progresses, i'm going to throw in my own colors here and there to suit my tastes of how I think it should look. but, here is the start, going to 'flat coat' it to take the shine of it as well, stay tuned........... -
did a deal with Mr Mopar [ Doug Spencer], smooth and great communication, very pleased. [12/7/13] just completed a trade with Brinx, will do so again in the future, good communication, well packed, great trade all around. traded some tires with Casey awhile ago, great guy, was just gonna send him the tires I had, he wouldn't hear of it, sent me twice the number of tires I sent him and some wheel backs to boot. Bowtienutz was kind enough to send me some impala parts for free to complete a kit I had, great guy and hope I can return the favor some day.

starting to get frustrated

I just recently did my first putty job on plastic, and much like you, couldn't really tell by feel how I was doing, so I sanded then primed and went from there. looks can be deceiving on these things and sometimes the area is so small it's hard to really 'feel' whats there. i'm also a gear head and hate body work, but, with some patience, it'll work out. this cab has a lower section that glues in, this was my first shot at body work, this is the inside, and this is what I ended up with on the outside, hang in there, if I can do it, so can you. -
well, on a lighter note, in the past week and a half I have had to replace a water pump on two buicks, one being a 68 riv, and the other a 62 electra 225 rag top. I mean really, what are the chances of these two cars showing up in my area in the same week, and both needing the same repair.....[ ya, I know, apparently pretty good from my little story, haha, but I found it funny]

what's it take? concept to package?
tbill replied to tbill's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I gotta admit, I was kind of just thinking out loud when I posted this, and didn't think it would generate much interest, but it has become pretty interesting. I work in a new car dealership, and I see the mark up on parts [ridiculous some times], so it got me to thinking about cost/mark up/ profit margin on kits. I wonder as well what the 'normal' mark up is on a kit, cause we all know that the vendors aren't selling them at cost, and there are differences in 'our cost' across the board depending on where you shop. just more thinking out loud I guess. -
I've often wondered, what kind of cash does it take to produce a model kit? I don't mean a re-hash of a kit from the 60's, but something like the 'new' stuff, like a pro star or a new lone star, and the new 53 foot refer trailer. above and beyond getting permission to use the 'name', you have a ton of time in making the prototype, man hours and man hours to make it 'right', then you gotta hope the public will like it/buy it[add in a bunch of research/test subjects to the mix]. what do ya figure it takes? i'm like everyone else, I want it all, and I want it now [and then I want to complain about how it doesn't meet my expectations]. in real time, what do you figure it takes??
