RIP Broadway Bob
mikemodeler replied to wisdonm's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Remember going there in my youth, lots of fun times. The new owners are nothing like Broadway Bob, but then I think anyone who met Bob would agree he is an original! RIP Bob! -
FREE issue of MCM
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, Just a question- will the online version be out before the printed copy? The reason why I ask is that if the printed copy comes out first and the newstands or LHS sell out their copies, how would one go about getting a hard copy if they like the magazine from the online preview? I chose to not renew my subscription as we have gone on a tight budget and had to cut back on some of the extras so looking at the mag online is a nice option. -
What Slows Down Your Builds?
mikemodeler replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This forum and life, throw in a small dose of motivation, long hours at work, and a family that has needed me and there you have it. The good news is that things will slow down here in a month and then I can get some building done. Lately even trying to finish a snap kit with a quickie paint job has been a monumental task! -

I need to get started on the one I have in my stash. I have been wanting to build a replica of the Bronco a friend's dad had at his 76 station back in the late 70's/early 80's. Now that the Revell GMC Plow Truck is out I will be able to do that! Nice job and those wheels look right at home on that truck. -
Nice job Nick! The only flaw I see is that it looks like you have air shocks on all 4 corners but if I remember correctly, that is an inherent problem with the kit. I like the wheels, never did like those snowflake wheels that came on those cars. Your skills continue to improve and impress, keep at it!

Model car club failure....
mikemodeler replied to modelmike's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
Most Hobby Lobby's have a classroom for various classes, maybe you can arrange to use it for meetings? Saturdays and Sundays are probably out but some week night (they close at 8 so you know you won't be out late!) Sell it to the store manager that your group will be spending money on a weekly basis and I bet you will have no problems. You might even look into a "Make-n-Take" event once you build up the club, might even get the store manager to sponsor it! -
Had plans to be at this show and get a table to sell off some kits but I am taking my son off to college in Vermont that weekend so I won't be able to make it. Hate to miss this show, some great people and equally great models!

Your thoughts and prayers please

Not much more I can add to what has already been said but you and your family will be in our prayers. Take care of your family and come back here when you can. -
Question for Camaro experts.
mikemodeler replied to sak's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To add a few more tidbits to the discussion, you could only get a 4 speed manual trans and air conditioning was not an option either. Most Z-28s were not heavily optioned as they were viewed as factory ready race cars for SCCA Trans Am competition. The 4 wheel disc brake and cross ram intake manifold options found in the Revell kit are pretty rare in the real world. -
Line-o-tape pinstripe tape
mikemodeler replied to dimebolt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I found some at a Hobbytown USA in Richmond VA, about $2.95 if memory serves me correct. I will have to check out the website and see what else is available. I picked up some chrome, black and safety tape (for semi truck and trailers). -
Age restriction or discrimination
mikemodeler replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I won't tell you to enjoy being 16, others have and they are right. In regards to the car insurance, we are in the same boat as you with my 18 year old son. We bought a $600 car and the first year the insurance in NC was $1600! We were able to get by a little cheaper by having him as the secondary driver of the car, that saved us $600 year, you may want to look into who is listed as the primary driver and how it is insured (liability only). Take a driving course if that helps the rates, be careful of how you drive, and be smart and don't cave in to peer pressure to drive fast or reckless! -

Does anybody know how many entries they got for this contest? Congrats to the winners! -
Revell's Make-nTake
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yep, all because I took her to a show/swap meet earlier this Spring, she has a newfound appreciation for this hobby and my collection. She gets the whole concept of modelbuilding- reading instructions, having patience, and seeing the job finished. She is excited to do this, and wants to start the class tomorrow! -
Revell's Make-nTake
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Update- My wife has an appointment with the afterschool program coordinator on Thursday and he is excited about her proposal. She contacted Revell today and the kits are reasonably priced so as long they go along with it, sounds like she will be running the class. She plans on having planes and cars as part of the class. As a trial run, she assembled the snap tite space shuttle today in about 30 minutes, she was real proud of herself! -
1950 Ford F-1
mikemodeler replied to nboldman's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
If it is going to be a shop truck, why not build it with a flatbed? Is it going to look like it was "restored" or look like some parts thrown together like a rat rod? Good luck with your build and hope you find your parts! -
Revell/Gearz Contest - Official Thread
mikemodeler replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think getting an honorable mention is great and wish that I had taken the time to enter. As far as which kits you end up getting, look at them as a reward for your hard work. Regardless if they are glue or snap kits, they have a retail value of $30-50, so that is a nice little prize to get these days! You may be able to exchange them with a hobby shop or retailer, it is worth asking or use them for a trade here on the forum. While a clean build and nice details are essential to winning a contest, I believe this contest all includes how well you photograph the model for the judges to evaluate which ones are the best. -
Some people are nuts !
mikemodeler replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nope! I am with with you on the kit vs. parts thing. FYI, if you contact Casey via PM, he has some nice five spokes that just may be what you are looking for. Good Luck! -
How far should I go?
mikemodeler replied to mnwildpunk's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would have him build it straight out of the box first time out. If he takes to it, then pick up a couple more and show him how the wheels from one kit fit on another, get some aftermarket decals and try them and when he is ready, get a simple glue kit. Keep him interested so the hobby survives! -
Revell's Make-nTake
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the responses so far guys, my wife will be calling Revell tomorrow to get an idea of what the costs and available kits will be. I told her I might be able to help out if/when she holds the class, depends on my work schedule. She needs to put together a program and present it to her school principal with costs and a business plan to get approved before she can order the kit. I will let you know what we find out. -
How did I get signed up for this?
mikemodeler replied to Austin T's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ah, I remember way back when I had my wisdom teeth pulled! 24 years ago, got a few days off work and some nice pain killers! Had all 4 pulled at once, came out in whole pieces, and while it hurt for a couple of days, I was back to normal in no time. The nitrous was the best part, the dentist was a family friend and he made sure I got enough to not feel a thing. I teased him about riding my motorcycle that day, something he didn't find funny until he saw my Mom in the waiting room to take me home! As to Brian & George's comments, our dentist has said our 18 year old son does not need to have his wisdom teeth pulled, he was blessed with a big mouth!!! -
very nice! That is one mean looking Olds and cleanly detailed!

All, I have a question for the forum brain trust- What do you know about the Revell Make-n-Take program? I need real life experiences and not " A buddy told me......" as my wife is a school teacher and she is looking at doing some afterschool programs and this was HER idea! She is looking at creating an afterschool program where the kids (Grades 3-5) would get together once a week and assemble various projects. We talked about different projects she could do and after looking at the Revell website, she said we should go to Hobby Lobby to get some ideas of what is out there for here to build her program with. I told her that she would have to demonstrate to me that she could assemble a snap tite model so she used her 40% off coupon on a space shuttle kit as I already have a couple of the '69 Camaros and '34 Fords. She will be calling Revell on Monday to see what the Make-n-Take kits cost and what is available. There is a good chance that she will have the kids put together several kits at different times so I might be the beneficiary of some left overs ! Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I was once consumed with having to have it perfect until I met a fellow modeler who seemed to build a model a day and he explained his secret- he built for himself and not a contest table! That isn't to say he didn't try to improve or fix issues with a given model, but he merely did what he could to make it a decent build but didn't worry about missing a mold line or perfect BMF. His models won raves from fellow modelers for their creativity and uniqueness, not necessarily because they had Donn Yost paint jobs or Marcos Cruz details! Build for yourself and don't sweat the details as much and you will have fun!

They did a major overhaul last week, Monday & Tuesday I think and it is laid out differently. Not a big fan of the new layout ( yes, I sneak around too!) but it is probably like anything else, it will just take some time to get comfortable with it.
