  1. Yep, all because I took her to a show/swap meet earlier this Spring, she has a newfound appreciation for this hobby and my collection. She gets the whole concept of modelbuilding- reading instructions, having patience, and seeing the job finished. She is excited to do this, and wants to start the class tomorrow!
  2. Update- My wife has an appointment with the afterschool program coordinator on Thursday and he is excited about her proposal. She contacted Revell today and the kits are reasonably priced so as long they go along with it, sounds like she will be running the class. She plans on having planes and cars as part of the class. As a trial run, she assembled the snap tite space shuttle today in about 30 minutes, she was real proud of herself!
  3. If it is going to be a shop truck, why not build it with a flatbed? Is it going to look like it was "restored" or look like some parts thrown together like a rat rod? Good luck with your build and hope you find your parts!
  4. I think getting an honorable mention is great and wish that I had taken the time to enter. As far as which kits you end up getting, look at them as a reward for your hard work. Regardless if they are glue or snap kits, they have a retail value of $30-50, so that is a nice little prize to get these days! You may be able to exchange them with a hobby shop or retailer, it is worth asking or use them for a trade here on the forum. While a clean build and nice details are essential to winning a contest, I believe this contest all includes how well you photograph the model for the judges to evaluate which ones are the best.
  5. Nope! I am with with you on the kit vs. parts thing. FYI, if you contact Casey via PM, he has some nice five spokes that just may be what you are looking for. Good Luck!
  6. I would have him build it straight out of the box first time out. If he takes to it, then pick up a couple more and show him how the wheels from one kit fit on another, get some aftermarket decals and try them and when he is ready, get a simple glue kit. Keep him interested so the hobby survives!
  7. Thanks for sharing Gerry, some nice cars there! I like that turquoise 67 Camaro, haven't seen one in that color in years!
  8. Thanks for the responses so far guys, my wife will be calling Revell tomorrow to get an idea of what the costs and available kits will be. I told her I might be able to help out if/when she holds the class, depends on my work schedule. She needs to put together a program and present it to her school principal with costs and a business plan to get approved before she can order the kit. I will let you know what we find out.
  9. Ah, I remember way back when I had my wisdom teeth pulled! 24 years ago, got a few days off work and some nice pain killers! Had all 4 pulled at once, came out in whole pieces, and while it hurt for a couple of days, I was back to normal in no time. The nitrous was the best part, the dentist was a family friend and he made sure I got enough to not feel a thing. I teased him about riding my motorcycle that day, something he didn't find funny until he saw my Mom in the waiting room to take me home! As to Brian & George's comments, our dentist has said our 18 year old son does not need to have his wisdom teeth pulled, he was blessed with a big mouth!!!
  10. very nice! That is one mean looking Olds and cleanly detailed!
  11. All, I have a question for the forum brain trust- What do you know about the Revell Make-n-Take program? I need real life experiences and not " A buddy told me......" as my wife is a school teacher and she is looking at doing some afterschool programs and this was HER idea! She is looking at creating an afterschool program where the kids (Grades 3-5) would get together once a week and assemble various projects. We talked about different projects she could do and after looking at the Revell website, she said we should go to Hobby Lobby to get some ideas of what is out there for here to build her program with. I told her that she would have to demonstrate to me that she could assemble a snap tite model so she used her 40% off coupon on a space shuttle kit as I already have a couple of the '69 Camaros and '34 Fords. She will be calling Revell on Monday to see what the Make-n-Take kits cost and what is available. There is a good chance that she will have the kids put together several kits at different times so I might be the beneficiary of some left overs ! Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
  12. I was once consumed with having to have it perfect until I met a fellow modeler who seemed to build a model a day and he explained his secret- he built for himself and not a contest table! That isn't to say he didn't try to improve or fix issues with a given model, but he merely did what he could to make it a decent build but didn't worry about missing a mold line or perfect BMF. His models won raves from fellow modelers for their creativity and uniqueness, not necessarily because they had Donn Yost paint jobs or Marcos Cruz details! Build for yourself and don't sweat the details as much and you will have fun!
  13. They did a major overhaul last week, Monday & Tuesday I think and it is laid out differently. Not a big fan of the new layout ( yes, I sneak around too!) but it is probably like anything else, it will just take some time to get comfortable with it.
  14. I have no dog in this fight but it could be there is conflicting information coming from Revell? Either way, until they are on the shelf it doesn't really matter does it?
  15. Are those being released by DTR, dirt track replicas? I saw them yesterday but did not look at them, not a subject matter of interest for me.
  16. Yeah, I found that out after my original post. Still, there is that reference to Jimmy Shine from the movie and considering that was back in 1980, he might have lifted the name from there. His real name is considerably longer and harder to pronounce than "Shine" An interesting note to that movie is that Tony Nancy appears in the movie as himself.
  17. Do some searching on net and I think that cab is available. I don't remember a kit being offered of that vintage semi but the cab is built off of the 67-72 GM body style. There were car hauler trailers available in kit form, do a search of eBay or some of the kit sellers (Modelroundup, Dean's Hobby Stop, Fred Sterns) as they might have that car hauler kit. I am not familiar with drive trains and frames but those wheels look like what is in some of the recently released truck kits and probably easier to use. Best of luck with your build. The real challenge will be building the kits to simulate the load on that trailer!
  18. I saw this yesterday at a HL and while it is nice to have, it doesn't compare to the truer to scale Don Mills treadplate. I also noticed that this product is only .010" thick and very thin and flimsy. I am not a rivet counter but there is a better treadplate out there, Don Mills.
  19. Wilbert, I started building models at age 8 and continued until I was about 17, when hormones and the curves of a woman replaced those of plastic cars. Over the ensuing 10 years or so I would check out models at stores but didn't really get back into it until I was 30. It was at lunch one day with a fellow "gear head" that we stumbled into a hobby shop and found the recently released AMT '62 Bel Air kit and I was back in the hobby ( as a side note, I started that kit and have yet to finish it!). Since then, I have bought and sold and traded probably 400 models and still try to build them when time allows. Now that I am 48, I find myself still buying kits and detailing items and occasionally I finish one! I mess up all the time and not just paint jobs. When I mess up, I think about what went wrong and it usually comes back to preparation or impatience! Yep, I said it, I get in a hurry and make mistakes! Either I don't check the fit or prep work on a kit or force something. My advise to you is to take your time, plan each build and not try to make a show winner on your first build, very few can pull that off! If you haven't picked up Donn Yost's DVDs, then that should be your first step in getting better paint jobs! Donn has broken down what some of us think is a complicated process and makes it easy to get a great paint job. Hang in there, some of us are destined to be great painters and win awards, others just love creating 1/25 scale versions of their dreams and having fun, which is what this hobby is all about!
  20. If you get the chance to watch the movie "Hollywood Knights" ( a classis movie for us car buffs), there is a character in the movie called Jimmy Shine. I can't remember the whole storyline but I think it may be a reference to his dad, not exactly sure.
  21. Very nice! Black is a hard color to build but you did a great job, nice and shiny and well detailed.
  22. Very nice and no, you are not the only one with more WIP than completed models! If I were to finish all of my WIP, then I would have to buy a couple more display cases or shelves for them!
  23. Don't forget Camp Swampy down in Jacksonville........First to Fight! ooorah!
  24. That rear wing must really help it hug the road at high speeds! As my Mother likes to say..."To each his own" .
  25. Your paint job came out so nice, maybe you could offer a few tips?? Like you, I am waiting for some low humidity days to hit the spray booth and try to get some color on that stack of kits in the corner! PS- I do hope you have picked up on my sarcasm, I have your DVDs and I think you have helped many improve their painting skills with them.
