  1. I know one way to find out........but I would rather spend the money on something that someone engineered properly. The same could probably be said about kitchen range hoods too Harry, afterall they are designed to extract fumes and are subjected to grease, but how many times do you hear about kitchen fires that start in the ductwork? I have seen and heard of many! If I can afford $25 model kits and $8 cans of Tamiya spray paint, then I can afford $200 for a properly built and engineered spray booth, even if it means fewer kits and spray paints. I could use my weedwacker to mow my lawn, but isn't my lawnmower designed to do that? Just Sayin!
  2. Very nice and if it wasn't for those out of scale mirrors from that kit, i would guess from that last picture it was a real car! Clean details and paint and excellent execution. I think the stance is just right and the wheels are a nice custom touch.
  3. Great idea in concept but I think the logistics and costs involved would be too great to get participation where it would be profitable. In the past, The Goodguys shows had a model contest ( i think) and there might have been others- World of Wheels rings a bell- and maybe a tie-in there with the Revell contest in the future could be the closest we come to such an event. While most of us do this as a hobby and try to be frugal, in the 1:1 world you have car builders and shop owners who make their living building custom cars and use those shows to showcase their talent and attract new customers, something model builders typically don't do.
  4. Thanks for the responses guys and I am still getting the list together of the kits I want to sell formatted for everyone to review. I think I have figured out my plan for selling these kits without having to spend a ton of money or time in the process. First I will offer them up to members here via PM- please don't send me a message just yet! I will let you all know when I am ready!! What ever kits are left over I will take to a show in Simpsonville, SC (Greenville area) in mid-May. If there are any left after that, I will consider eModelcars and then eBay or any other upcoming model shows/swap meets. My plan includes getting some boxes and packing material ready so that I can ship fairly quickly and cheaply once I am ready to go. I would like to be able to offer free shipping but it will obviously be reflected in the kit price if I do. I am not sure how International shipping works (cheapest, most reliable, etc) so I may elect to ship USA only, I will try to get all the facts and figures. To Dan's point above, my re-investment plans do include some kit purchases and most likely a Pace spray booth as I want to have a clean & safe painting station to replace the cardboard box in the garage! My goal is to reduce the number of impulse buys and instead focus on those kits that I truly intend to build. Thanks again, I should have the list ready by this weekend and will start a new post alerting you all !
  5. According to my wife I am a big kid and I am 48 years old! I think some of it has to do with availability and cost. 40 years ago my Mom could buy me a kit at the grocery/drug store when she was shopping for $3.00 and I would have new (extra) chores to do once I got home. Today you would have to drive out of your way to find model kits, at least here in Charlotte you would, and unless you went to Hobby Lobby or Michaels with a coupon, you will be out $25.
  6. I have no doubt that eBay is the best way to sell these kits but it is the time aspect that has me aprehensive over starting down that road. With 170 kits to possibly sell (maybe more), it could take me a considerable amount of time to get rid of them, not to mention my free time, which I have very little of. I have considered selling them in lots, although that can be tricky because they have to be the right combos to appeal to buyers. Thanks for the tip, if I list them on eBay I will let the forum know.
  7. Something tells me that would be the humane thing to do!
  8. I had thought of that- we have the Food Lion Auto Fair coming up in 2 weeks here at the Charlotte Speedway but figure a table would probably run $100. I have learned of a show next month in SC that I may attend, if my schedule works out. Thanks!
  9. You have picked two of more challenging kits to assemble, best of luck with them.
  10. Or maybe he saw the guy selling old kits piecemeal and figured if a set of wheels and tires is worth $25, then the whole kit has to be worth $100!
  11. I have checked Craigslist, but there is little activity here in Charlotte. On a negative side, there has been a rash of robberies associated with Craigslist here locally, not that model builders are the type prone to ripping others off ! There is a show about 90 minutes south of here in mid-May that could be an outlet, will have to see what tables run. Thanks for the tip.
  12. Not sure I would trust such a set up. There are reasonably priced already assembled spray booths out there that take the guesswork out of which motor to use and how to vent it. If you do decide to build your own, do a forum search on the topic and there should be multiple posts available for viewing.
  13. Depending on what I am shipping, I will look into delivery confirmation and insurance. If it is just a set of wheels, then I usually pass on it, but a kit will always get d/c and insurance, because it is cheap to do so and gives the guy on the other end some piece of mind in the event there is a problem. Posting names of "bad" traders, like Harry has stated, can get tricky and we have enough drama here without going down that road, don't we? Look at the controversy stirred up over the "comments" thread!
  14. It is a great show and I plan on going to it although if my son gets accepted to the college he wants, I will be a 1,000 miles away and unable to make it. That show is a great one for buying kits and also some great models.
  15. Jon, I have two of those kits I plan to sell and would not think of taking less than $10 for them but I am realistic to know that they are worth probably no more than $15-20 , max. I know of a couple of hobby shops that I could pick up the latest version of the kit (gray car on box) and they sell them for $18-20. Would I rather get $99 for them instead? Sure, but I would be hesitant to sell them at that price as I know I would be ripping someone off. I agree that if he gets $24.95 for that kit and includes shipping, then he is really only getting $15-17 for the kit itself.
  16. Check out The Modelroundup website as they have been getting more of the Tamiya spray paints into stock.
  17. i went with model, seems like it has been awhile since Harry threw us a curve ball.
  18. Having both kits, I don't believe there is a difference Bill, other than the issue date. Like I stated earlier, if these kits are worth that much I may have hit the lottery!
  19. Then your best bet would be to contact the old kit sellers- Fred Sterns, Dean's Hobby Stop, JiminOhio, Modelroundup, Model Empire- i am probably forgetting a few but if buying is your only option, they would be the ones to check with.
  20. Been thinking about that avenue Chuck as it worked for me in the past as well but other than a Hobbytown USA, there is not a LHS for 20 miles around me. Their selection has not changed much over the last year (except what I have bought it seems!) so I am not sure what kind of traffic their model kit aisle sees. I am thinking about contacting a couple of clubs in the surrounding area to see if they have members that might be interested in buying some/all of the kits too. Thanks for the ideas so far!
  21. Post this down in the "wanted" section and you may have more luck. I would also check with some of the OOP and vintage kit sellers and see what they have available. You might want to be more specific in which parts packs you are looking for as there are different ones out there.
  22. I have a couple of those in my stash targeted to sell, at that price I may have a small fortune sitting in my garage! As P.T. Barnum was fond of saying...."There's a sucker born every minute"
  23. Art, Very good points and I would only add that some of the decline has to do with the number of outlets where models could be found back in the day. I live in Charlotte NC and there are few places to find models today- Hobby Lobby, Michaels, a couple of Hobbytown USAs and a couple of LHS that cater to R/C stuff in a 50 mile radius. I have tried to get my kids involved in model building but there are too many other instant gratification sources to compete with and unless it is Facebook, my kids prefer to be involved in group activities. I for one am glad to see some of the subjects that have recently hit the shelves and have been announced. I hope the kit companies are able to continue bringing us the new releases and refreshed old tools for years to come.
  24. Very impressive Mark, looks like a buff job on the paint and some engine degreaser would have that car ready for cruise night! Keep those builds coming!
  25. I know a couple of guys that like to rough people up for fun, you want their phone numbers? I would file a complaint with post office if it was mailed via USPS. If you have copies of the emails and any other supporting documentation, maybe a call to the local police department is in order. If it is a small dollar amount, say under $50, there probably isn't much that can be done but if it is $300 or more, that is a felony in most cases and worth pursuing. It's a shame that someone is pulling this on you but whenever I do a trade, I always do it with the notion that it might be onesided and I may never see the item(s) I am trading for. Best of luck and keep us informed.
