You forgot one more good source for rare models: Diecasts! I can think of quite a few 1/24-1/25 diecasts that are quite nice, or at least acceptable if nothing else is available, and priced in the neighborhood of a new kit (@ $30, or less). In a couple cases I can think of, an available cheap diecast actually looks better than an available kit.

Loco Joe's is heavy on RR but not exclusively. Maybe half. They had a very nice selection of cars, airplanes, and armor too--better than Hobby Lobby. Also Tamiya paints, AMT Parts Packs, some aftermarket wheels, Evergreen styrene, and tools and general supplies. Prices weren't horrible, either, and Joe's a nice guy. I dropped the better part of a C-note there. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area--and if you're coming up 81 in that part of the country, it's less than 10 minutes out of your way (and you can hit that Rite-Aid for the cheap Wellys on your way in or out).

As Dave said, a high price point but it was in their catalog for many years so it must have been a steady seller.

Agree. But you could probably save yourself a buttload of time and eliminate at least one of the polishes if you'd wet-sand the clear lacquer with #1000-#2000 grit paper before any polishing.

Disagree. I've seen quite a few "rat rods" that had way more eye appeal than this backbirth. Not EVERY rat rod, of course (many of which are straight-up eyesores), but several I can think of.

Thanks for the heads-up. There are a couple other hobby joints in that general area, too--Loco Joe's Hobbies in Inwood, the Rite-Aid drugstore in Inwood usually has some cool $10 Welly 1/24 diecasts, and there's a Hobby Lobby in Martinsburg.

Yes, you can clear-coat foil, but at least in this case, I wouldn't. The day will probably come when you will get a lot better at foiling, at which point you will want to scrape this job off and re-do it, because the paint itself looks pretty good. Just sayin' as somebody who's been there and done that.
