Looking for louvers
SfanGoch replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Starting on the new kits, huh? Short of fabricating your own out of sheet brass, you are Sierra Oscar Lima. Measure the louvers on the kit, draw the louvers on a sheet of brass, carefully scribe the lines (where the openings will be) until you cut through the brass, use a pick, or some other instrument to open up and shape the opening. You could also splurge and get a photo etch making set and make your own that way. Good thing you got that mojo working, man. -
Nothing to compare. The latter is quality reading as opposed to the former.

It was good while it lasted.

An apology

I'm really sick and tired of all these photos with this shadow stuff. Cut it out. That's a good looking model. -
Got my model building mojo back!

Nice. Oodles of detail to keep those creative juices flowing. -
You can get the mushroom at The Plant, in Chicago. GNC probably carries the extract/capsules.

This bit of breaking news pleased me to no end.

You forgot Pokey. -
Chalk it up to outsourcing. It could be done here if the companies really wanted to do it. There are plenty of injection molding and and mold making companies in the U.S. It all comes down to the bottom line - money. None of the American model companies want to spend the money on equipment to manufacture kits here because the operating costs in China for these facilities is much lower.

Three high-rises going up simultaneously on my block. Nothing but construction racket six days a week.

An apology
SfanGoch replied to The Modeling Hermit's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Happy now, Harry? No apologies are necessary, Doug. Ignore the gavones in the cheap seats. It's nobody's business to tell you how you should present your models. -
I had to reread that post to make sure I understood it correctly. Translation: Jeff contacted Shelby regarding licensing rights to produce Cobra Daytona models, not Cheetahs. He meant that licensing rights (actually, the absence of) are the same reason why no full detail 1/25 scale injection molded Cobra Daytona kits have been produced. BTW, the trademark for the Bill Thomas Cheetah is owned by........William P. Thomas III. These are the trademark details: https://trademarks.justia.com/860/63/bill-thomas-86063410.html

You can never go wrong using the best Tiger I resource sites, Tiger1.info and Tiger im Focus. -
"Pure Quality" and "Made in China" is an oxymoron and should never be used together.

I always spray a clear overcoat over foil. I found that it keeps food fresher and prevents freezer burn. -
This should be pinned on page 1.

A lean, green racing machine! Those handlebars were great. You had to lean into them and looked like you were doing 100mph even while coasting. Beats the heck out of BMX or mountain bikes. Kids around here used to tie a partially filled balloon onto the front fork to sound like a motorcycle when the spokes rubbed against it. -

I'd believe that if you lived in Staten Island. It's still 1974 in most areas there. -
Automotive (and other) toys from our childhood

My parents weren't rich by any standard. We, like almost every other resident of the neighborhood, were lower middle class Greenpointers. I made that discovery after living with them. There was a point when I considered disowning them. My mom and dad squirreled away the money so that they could get me this bike as a Communion present and I was forever grateful. I was probably the only kid in the entire Greenpoint-Williamsburg area that was lucky enough to own a Krate. I never saw another one like it while riding around. Believe me when I say that there more than a few kids who attempted to change that status. The two Grey Ghosts my son and I have were purchased together at a bike shop in Park Slope. We just got off the bus and were heading to the supermarket when I happened to turn toward the street to light up a smoke. Across the street, I saw something strangely familiar in the bike shop window. I grabbed my son and went to take a closer look. JEEZUSEFFINCHRIST! Not one, but TWO FREAKING SCHWINN GREY GHOST KRATE BIKES!!!! I walked right into the shop and asked the woman who owns the joint how many does she have besides the two in the window. She said those were it. How much? "$600." I'm taking both of them. Roll' em out. She let me have both for $1050. She said I was the first jer...customer who had any clue as to what kind of bikes they were. She threw in two front and rear tires, inner tubes, lights, toolkits and bags for free. Needless to say, we forgot about the supermarket. My dad got me a super cool bike when I was a kid. Now, it was my turn to do the same for my son. He also has a regular Grey Ghost with foot brake which we're going to convert into another 5 Speed with a stick shift. I bought that one on eBay for 76 bucks including shipping from Jersey. -
