Taking pictures of your models
atomicholiday replied to Jairus's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I had a discussion yesterday with another member regarding photography. My pics have never really been that great and this gentlemen gave me some tips. And what a difference! But it started me experimenting and now I'm on a mission. So here's where I'm at after a few hours of playing around with the camera. First off, the camera is a Nikon D3200 with the Nikkor 18-55 VR lense. The settings I used on the following pics were exposure option A, ISO set to 100, and F-stop set to 8. I've got the camera about 16 inches away from the subject on a tripod and setting a 5 second delay timer. The pics still don't seem very sharp to me, but they are better than they were. Any suggestions on getting them to come out a little more clear? -
How many do you have going?
atomicholiday replied to Jonj238's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Normally I'll have one or two that are my main focus and about 10 or so (no real set number) that I'll tinker with now & then. And the ten change all the time depending on my mood. I may pull one out, work on it for five minutes, put it away and not touch it again for years. Also, the closer one gets to completion, the less interested I am in anything else. I sort of zone in on that one. Right now my main focus is a P40-B, but yesterday I played around with the BMF on a GTO, and started cleaning up the mold lines on a Fairlane. Today? Who knows. As long as I keep working, it's cool. -
Yeah, that paint looks great.

Here's one I built back around '86-'87. Tamiya 1/12 Honda NSR500 Rothmans Grand Prix bike. The white paint is pretty yellowed out now from age. Found it in a box with a few other un-finished projects. I'm not gonna post a pic of the other side because a few pieces are broken off and missing from that side. But this side is still intact! I wish there was a way to remove the fairing on these bikes. There is SOOOooo much detail hidden behind it. Check it out!

Tamiya paint stand

I'm with Scott on this one. Not sure I get it. Is it somehow building up pressure under there and that causes it to pop off? What exactly is making a popping sound when it comes off? Been thinking about getting one of these, but I'm not excited about screwing up a paint job. -
Great looking ride! Very nice color too. Nice job.

That looks fantastic! Looks like the real car. Great build.

Monogram 1970 Challenger T/A Rebuild-Under Glass 03-13

Exhaust and interior look great Joe. This one's shaping up really nice! -
Yeah, check it out. I did a little painting/weathering on a few bits. Here's where we're at so far. I did the area around the wheel wells and covers in MM pale green and the flaps in MM interior green and sprayed all of that with Future. Then I brushed on some brown wash I made from Tamiya acrylics and thinner. I still need to spray some clear flat on the flaps. They're a bit too glossy yet. I'm debating what color to paint the inside of the wing above the wheel wells. I can tell from pics there's a zip in liner in there, and I've heard it's the same color as the bottom of the plane, but everybody seems to paint that area interior green. I can't decide if I'm happy with this wash or not. I don't know how realistic it really is. Any thoughts? Anyway, I'm working on the exhaust next. I got the base color sprayed but I still want to dry brush a little rust on the tips. Won't be to long and I'll be gluing the fuselage halves together. Can't wait for that part. It'll be cool to see it start actually looking like a plane!

'69 Mustang Mach I - Update - 2-5-15
atomicholiday replied to atomicholiday's topic in WIP: Model Cars
... or maybe I'll just keep plugging away at it! I tried out a little chassis weathering this time around. I get tired of all my chassis being plain old black. What I did was give the high points a light dry brushing with some light grey paint, then splashed some brown wash (my own special brew of tamiya acrylics & thinner) all over the floor boards & other lower parts. It's pretty subtle and still looks black, but up close I think it makes it a little more interesting. Opinions? I'm also in the process of removing the rest of the decals from the body. Whatever I decide to do about a clear coat, I'll do it before I reapply more stripes. -
Sweet mustang!

Do you or don't you?

I fall into the "if you can see it, paint it" camp.
