Thanks gman--I just checked and it's actually Plastikote, #7172 (doesn't have a name, apparently). Yes, it does have very fine particles, it's almost a pearl paint rather than metallic.

Thanks all! Phil--the color is actually Plastikote 7172 (Canadian), doesn't have a specific name as far as I know. It looks dull red in the shade, and flops slightly pink/magenta in the sun.

Calling this one done for now (it's missing the radiator support bar in these pics, I'll make another that fits better). Thanks for all the comments on the WIP, it's been a long road (2009-now) so it's great to finally have this one on the shelf. There are about 13 other projects waiting for time on the bench now! A brief summary: -Body and interior: Revell 32 Tudor, interior floorpan partially scratchbuilt. Chopped, channeled. Chopped grille shell. -Scratchbuilt frame (styrene) and gas tank (balsa) -Wheels and front tires: AMT 34 Ford -Rear tires: die cast 56 Thunderbird -Engine: Revell '41 Chevy Pickup. Carbs: resin copies of AMT 34 Ford parts. Air cleaners: Revell '49 Mercury custom. Headers and radiator hoses are solder. -Taillights: indicators from 57 Corvette ( I think) -scratchbuilt chopped windshield frame, acetate windows -front radius rods made from rear wishbones of AMT '31 Ford woody -finned drum brakes made from cut-down toothepaste caps -brake backing plates: resin copies of parts from Monogram '32 roadster -grille insert: metal from an office door nameplate, drilled and polished

Love the bare metal effect! I'm impressed that you managed to BMF the whole model without much in the way of wrinkles or seams. With the various washes to add patina, it looks very convincing.

'32 Ford Sedan Delivery - 80's Smoothie Billet Rod

Yep, can't have false info floating around on the internet where anyone could read it! I will replace it with a more accurate and relevant quote: "Nobody builds 'em like Dennis Lacy"--Mahatma Gandhi -

Because I can't get the "Edit" feature to work, I have deleted that post. Thanks for correcting me, Tim. -

Whoa, whoa! I must correct my horrible mis-attribution! Mike Carrol did indeed write the passage about the "Lizard Sweat Green". I apologize profusely, and will endeavor to correct my post. Nuts! -
Looks great, I love the body mods and the color is unconventional and dramatic. So...did you just shoot Testors Wet Look clear (an oil-based product as far as I know) over acrylic paint?? I thought oil-over-acrylic generally resulted in disaster. It has in my experience. Very curious!

Thanks Tim! I had a bunch of trouble trying to get it square. It's close enough, haha.

In general, I'm finding that searching ebay for "AMT- Ertl decals" gives me stuff from that era. Here are some 69 Chevell SS graphics http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/kits/images/CarAMT/amt2212-2decals.JPG and AMT -92 corvette Zr1 graphics: http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/278AAOSwoBtW3GY9/s-l225.jpg AMT 68 plymouth roadrunner graphics: http://d2ydh70d4b5xgv.cloudfront.net/images/1/a/amt-ertl-1-25-68-plymouth-roadrunner-decal-kit-6515-8930-5dccb5bc486c23467af055bc58a6b82e.jpg AMT 69 olds http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/M0AAAOSwoudW3Kwj/s-l225.jpg Ertl SS graphics http://i.ebayimg.com/images/a/(KGrHqYOKj!E5W9!lpC!BOkzCBpivw~~/s-l500.jpg -
'32 Ford Sedan Delivery - 80's Smoothie Billet Rod

The Monogram '40 Ford coupe street rod has some longer stretched-checkmark graphics, but they'd work best with red or black paint I think. -

Awesome. Makes me want to do a billet build too. Maybe a hard-chopped 48 Chevy in flesh pink, tunneled everything, splash graphics, painted bumpers... I just dug through my kits and decals and to my surprise didn't really find anything that would fit with aqua paint. The Roth Beatnik Bandit II has pink/purple graphics that could maybe be re-purposed. The Lindberg '34 PU has some radical pink/purple parallel ribbon graphics, but they're too short for a '32 panel. Also found some red jagged speed-scallops, and rounded black scallops. No long splash-graphics though, which is what I was looking for. -
Thanks everyone! It's been a long road so far...looking forward to putting this one on the shelf

Thanks Tom! I appreciate the compliments. I initially wasn't sure if this concept for the T would work, or come out looking cobbled-together. Just the other day I was trying to check out the Fotki galleries of your cool 80's builds, but those galleries seem to be defunct...bummer!

Awesome! You gonna paint it teal? Aqua with pink heartbeat graphics? Fleshtone pink? For taillights, I suggest double or triple ball-mill slot style, or deeply tunneled round lights. I never liked this era of hot rods, but that's funny because they're what I grew up on. Now I can appreciate them in an anthropological kind of way. I have a '37 Tudor that I was planning to do as a 90s rod with 2-tone paint divided at the beltline, on Boyd Smoothster wheels and tires...but the Testors tires developed terminal cracks. Dang it. So now it's waaaaay on the backburner. Looking forward to seeing more! -
Here's an old unfinished built that is finally nearing completion. In 2009, I started a Revell '32 Tudor by chopping the top (my 2nd chop ever, and first sedan chop) and dropping it on a scratchbuilt frame with a Revell '41 Chevy PU stovebolt 6 engine. It was only my second build after re-entering the model car hobby in '09. The initial plan was to run straight pipes and have rear airbags and a very low stance, like the rat rods of the day but with nicer paint. I tossed around a number of ideas for paint color, from brown and black to metallic aqua and red. Eventually I settled on a Duplicolor metallic red. In 2009 I didn't know where to get tall rear bias-ply tires, so I spent ages looking for discount toys and was ecstatic to find the 1:24 diecast T-bird tires for the rear. 6 years later, I know how many options are available online, and also which kits have the best traditional-style tires. The build languished half-built for years, and last year I pulled it out to fix some problems with the paint, and chop the grille shell. Then it sat again. Finally this year I pulled it out and am assembling it. Because I didn't plan as well in 2009 as I do now, assembly has been frustrating and there were several minor disasters with glue and fitment. In the end, I've mounted the body higher than originally intended, and changed the exhaust to a set of sweeping dual pipes made from solder. The original setup: Building the frame: Modifying the interior, scratchbuilt windshield frame: How it sat for years: Getting another coat of paint: Updated exhaust made from solder: How it stands today, just needs some radiator hoses and other small details:

Thanks Richard, that's exactly what I was going for! I'm glad that intent made it through to the final product.

Love it! Nice work keeping everything in scale and square, sharp-edged. It's a very convincing prop!

Awesome kitbashing...the cycle fenders, baby moon hubcaps, and rear bumper give it a much more unique and interesting appearance than a box-stock build would have. As stated in the WIP thread, I love the color combo too! Very sharp indeed

28 Ford woody sedan ,surfers hot rod , SANCRAB ,
Spex84 replied to bpletcher55's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Wicked! I'm really, really liking the woody treatment. Great work on the woodgraining! Your model has all of the attitude of the illustration, and that's quite an achievement. -
Hey Jantrix, here's your update Thanks for the interest! So this model has been sitting in a box, more or less ready to assemble, for months now. I finally found the time to put it together. Ran into a few last-minute assembly problems and minor disasters, but it turned out OK. I'll probably post some finished shots in daylight later. Getting the black wheels and body to show up in photos is difficult! Since the last update, I sprayed some dullcote on the chrome suspension components, and added a metal brake disc to the plastic discs up front, and added foil-copied brake calipers to the inside of the front brake discs (because they only had caliper detail on one side). I couldn't resist dropping a '30 ford coupe body on the frame before final assembly, just to see how it looked. Strange...but lean and mean, too. I think I like it. Maybe someday I'll build a '30 with IFS and skinny tires on wire wheels, just for kicks.

I think this would be a useful technique for 80s-90s rods, or more modern high-tech builds, but it would look a bit out of place on a 50s or 60s-style build. Thanks for sharing, going to remember this one. Wayne--that's a nifty technique, if a lot of work. Getting the louvers perfectly aligned must have been a bear.

1963 Corvette Grand Sport (update 8/16/16)
Spex84 replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That is a sweet-lookin' engine so far! -
I never really thought about those windows until today, and...I like the louvered vents better. As a window, it seems oddly placed and unfinished. Funny that "stick-on-cheese" actually improves it (at least in my eyes). Normally that kind of stuff makes me wanna hurl.

Posting Your Build on the Other Guy’s Thread
Spex84 replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just did this the other day, and only because I want to show a certain part. I still felt a bit funny about it. I would have ended up searching google and posting somebody else's photo to illustrate my point, so might as well use a photo of my own build if it's appropriate.
