Plastic Surgery for the 1/8th "Big T"
old-hermit replied to GrandpaMcGurk's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Good day to you too Don, I am not now and never intend to get into the production & sales end of this hobby. It would ruin the fun for me. As you state, it is a small niche market so why bother to "do a master, make a mold, cast the boards in resin (you know what resin & RTV costs) do the advertising, ship internationally, take care of Uncle Sam, inventory parts, run ads on eBay, set up a web site for your products deal with daily emails from folks with questions......sell maybe a half dozen or so boards in a small niche market" ????????? It's not worth the return on investment. But TDR sells a lot of other pricey products so one little item isn't going to dig deep into your profit margin. Most large scale builders must scratch build to create what they want because the commercial model companies have to think of their profit margin too and won't/don't offer what we want. TDR is providing a service to the large scale model building community that I think is needed and definately wanted but I also believe that most builders won't buy the products because of the price. And from what I've read here on this forum about the work required to make the items useable after purchase would be a deterent also. I've seen 3-D files printed on a top shelf RP printer and the finish is perfect unlike TDR's. Afterward they were cast in resin with the same perfect finish. I will add that an engine done this way sells for about half of what TDR is asking for theirs. And to compare apples to oranges, I see hundreds of ads for Pocher kits & parts on e bay and some dealers and sites exclusively for Pocher but you rarely see one built because of the same aforementioned reasons. I wish you, Rick & Tim the best of luck with your endeavour. Time will tell. -

Thread Hi-Jackers R U 1

Cats, ya like cats ? Now THIS is a cat !!!! Personally I like my cat cooked ... Southern Cat Stew ~ one fat cat ~ salt ~ pepper ~ Adolph's meat tenderizer ~ oil ~ 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables ~ 1 - 18 oz jar Heinz chicken gravy ~ 1 - 2 cans Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits Heat the oil in a large skillet. Rub the cat with the Adolph's. Season to taste with the salt and pepper. Add to the skillet and cook on high until browned on all sides. Flip as needed. Remove the meat and place in a crock pot. Add 1 inch of water and cook on high 3 - 4 hours or until meat starts to fall off the bone. Remove the meat and allow to cool. Save the water/broth if you want thinner gravy. Remove the meat from the bones and return to crock pot. Add the veggies, gravy and broth if desired. Stir together. Cook on high 1 1/2 hours or until hot. Serve over buttermilk cathead biscuits. Enjoy. -

Thanks for the compliments guys. I've been in a slump lately and this build is bringing me out of it. I got the pedals done this AM Rick. I had to wait till the body was placed with the floor to get the right height. Cameras sure do bring out all the boo boo's. Looks like I need to do some touching up on the dash and get some better glasses. -

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm glad y'all are liking this. I sure am. I did some weathering to the engine this AM ( sorry to make your engine look so bad Ralph) ... What better way to oil up an engine than real oil ... and some weathering powders ... Stay tuned, more to come ... It's getting close to finished so I took an outside teaser pic ... . -

Ya get what ya pay for Jeff. A top notch printer will produce smooth parts (costs more). With a cheaper printer you can see the printed layers (rough surface texture). -

After setting the engine in place I realised I needed a driveshaft tunnel so a few modifications were made to the floor board. I also had to split the seat. It didn't turn out as I pictured so I might go with some bomber seats. Also ya gotta have a hood ornament / radiator cap. . -

Got back out this AM and did a little more. The more I looked at the intake the more I didn't like it so I changed it to a single motysikle carb. Same thing with the front motor mount. Added some yaller front shocks just for a goof. and made a stock distributor for it. I still need to put spark plugs in it but you get the idea. More pics here http://public.fotki.com/old-hermits-garage/8thscalemodels/29-roadster-pickup/page3.html . -

Got Ralph's 4 banger finally without having to do bodily harm to the mail lady !!!!! I've been at it since about quarter till six this AM to get as much done while it's still cool. Heres a few pics BEFORE grease, grime and rust. Since Ralph only had two carbs and what street rod doesn't need three, I scratched up a custom exhaust and log intake manifold for it. I've still got some fine tuning to do to it so no paint yet. It needed a front motor mount so a little adjusting on a Lindy Exterminator one did the trick. It's reached 90 degrees here so that's it for today, more to come as weather permits. . -
