Your Very First Real Car
E St. Kruiser50 replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I LOVE '50 MERC'S. This is a model of my first car I bought when I was in high school, in 1960 - a '50 Merc. I built the flat head with all the goodies and blew it up. A mailman friend who drove a '41 Willys with a '57 Hemi in it was really into the "HEMI THING", and offered me an early Hemi, 1953 for $30.00. My dad said it was O.K., and later I bought a '55 Chrysler 300 dual quad set-up from the same guy - John McNown. Wheels and tires came from PEP BOYS in SoCal. My sis has the pic's. I did a mild custom job on the body and painted it myself. A year later it was on the road and racin' - EEEHA -
I'LL STILL BE MAKING "CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP" . ( I make the best chicken noodle soup.... )

Chris, I appreciate all the time you took to post this, but I'm assuming you must be in your twenties to have included this "QUOTED" statement in your post. The American car manufacturers have been playing "CATCH-UP" for decades to the foreign car manufacturers, because of the quality, style, and long term service the foreign manufacturers provide. Also the much higher resale value. THE ONLY REASON WE'VE HAD GREAT CARS TO DRIVE IN THIS COUNTRY UNTIL LATELY, IS BECAUSE THE FOREIGN MARKET >DIDN'T< COPY OUR JUNK FORM THE PAST. TELL ME, WHAT DID MERCEDES, SUBARU, VOLVO, NISSAN, TOYOTA, HONDA, BMW, ETC. COPY FROM US TO MAKE A BETTER CAR THAN OURS, OR EVEN LOOK LIKE OURS, AND WHY HAVE ALL >OUR< CARS LOOKED LIKE THEIRS FOR THE LAST 15 or 20 years ???? And why does theirs last MUCH longer. I do love American cars, JUST NOT AMERICAN JUNK. It took us decades to come to this point where the U.S. manufacturers are making some descent cars again, and I agree, we have some nice cars here now.

What type of paint to use?
E St. Kruiser50 replied to Patrick2005's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Hey Patrick Remember that paint alone isn't always the problem. Weather conditions, temp., humidity, painting skills, compatability of your different paints and primers, the techniques you use, like how long to wait between each coat, etc., all play a major roll in good painting. SPRAY PAINTING ISN'T "PLUG N PLAY", it takes serious time to learn, and you will make mistakes - part of learning. Get yourself a package of white plastic picnic spoons, and start spraying samples. The spoons are made of styrene like your model kits, and will accurately give you the same results as on a kit body. Once you figure out what works, then your ready to spra some "KEEPERS" . -
Cash for clunkers question..........
E St. Kruiser50 replied to roadhawg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
WHEN I WAS A KID EVERYONE KNEW THE ANSWER TO THIS. LIFE WAS ABOUT INTEGRITY, SELF-WORTH AND REPECTING OTHERS POSESSIONS. I was raised "OLD SCHOOL" and so were my kids. TO ME THE QUESTION HERE ISN'T ABOUT WHO OWNED THE TRUCK TAILGATE. THE QUESTION SHOULD BE WHO DIDN'T OWN IT. WHEN YOU STEAL, IT'S TAKING SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU - PERIOD, BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO RESPECT THE RIGHT OF SOMEONE ELSE WHO OWN'S IT - NO MATTER WHO THE OWNER IS, WHETHER YOU KNOW OR NOT, "IT'S NOT YOURS - PERIOD. DOESN'T MATTER WHO OWNS IT OR WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO IT, IT'S STILL NOT YOURS - PERIOD. THAT'S JUST SPLITTING HAIRS TO JUSTIFY THE CRIME. I've seen this kind of "ENTITLEMENT MENTALITY" growing over the years, and your story is just another example of ENTITLEMENT AND CRIME BY JUSTIFICATION. OR CRIME AND JUSTIFICATION BY ENTITLEMENT. The problem today is the same as it's always been. YOU HAVE HONEST PEOPLE AND YOU HAVE THIEVES - PERIOD. HONEST PEOPLE WOULD NEVER THINK OF TAKING THE TAIL-GATE because it goes against their >CORE VALUES< - SOMETHING THAT MORE AND MORE SEEMS TO BE DISAPPEARING. THE GUY WHO TOOK THE TAIL-GATE HAS MOST ASSURADELY STOLEN BEFORE AND JUSTIFIED IT, AS SOME HERE PROBABLY HAVE TOO, ESPECIALLY IF YOU AGREED THAT TAKING IT WAS O.K. THE OTHER QUESTION SHOULD BE - DO YOU RESPECT OTHERS PROPERTY, NO MATTER WHO'S IT IS, THE SAME AS YOU'D WANT YOURS RESPECTED. BY THE ANSWERS I'VE READ HERE BY SOME OF YOU, I'D HATE TO LIVE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD !!!!! WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN, THE THIEF WOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH HARSHLY BY >ANYONE< SEEING HIM DO IT. TODAY NOBODY CARES, AND EVEN AGREE'S IT'S O.K. - CHANGING CORE VALUES. JUST ANOTHER CASE OF "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME" . -
BEAUTIFUL WORK BILL Definantly worth all the work and problems - NOW . TO ME THE IS THE "MONEY SHOT". THE SILLOETTE OF THIS CAR IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL .

50'S AND 60'S CAR HISTORY IN SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. When I was a kid IN SoCal, SEPT. 12th was the day everyone got excited about. That's the day the new cars hit the "SHOW ROOM FLOORS". At night the seachlights would come on, and everyone in town new where the new cars were, and that they had arrived. I remember my folks packing us kids up, and going to see the new cars. Didn't make much sense when I was a kid, but we got free cookies and pop at the dealers, so it was all good. Seemed like no matter where you went, the whole town was there. Thousands of people out, lookin' at the newest offerings. When I got to driving age I got "The Bug" like everyone else. My buddies and I would drive around town all night to the different dealers, who stayed open extra late. We'd chase the "SEARCH LIGHTS" all night, from dealer to dealer. There was free dougnuts, cookies, pop, and coffee and a "Rock N Roll" band or loud radio music to add to the festivities. Every dealer you went to, it was like a carnival, with hundreds of people there. Ya had to park a long way away, and walk for blocks to get there. The fanciest models of the new cars were always on the inclosed show room floor. The biggest deal and most exciting, was to buy one of the first cars ON THE SHOW ROOM FLOOR, on the first night, and in front of all the "GAWKING SPECTATORS", and then to have the sales staff, slide open the glass doors, you get to get in and drive it out onto the lot and drive off down the street in your new shiny chariot, to the cheers of everyone standing there watching and waving DID I SAY A CARNIVAL ?????. TALK ABOUT AN EGO TRIP - WELL, THAT'S HOW IT USED TO BE DONE.......IN THE DAY

Well Bill, the love affair with the automobile in this country is all but dead, THE "APPLIANCE" has become the new standard IMHO. Since the early 70's, there has been nothing made in this country to be in love with, except Corvettes and maybe the later MUSTANGS - NOT INCLUDING THE MUSTANG II - JUNK , AND SOME GREAT TRUCKS - BUT CARS - THATS ANOTHER STORY . The past has proven that U.S. automakers can make exciting cars, but for whatever reason we could come up with and discuss all day long here - THEY QUIT . U.S car makers don't get it, and maybe they never will. There has been a culture shift, and foreign car makers get it. They aren't SNOW BLIND". They're looking from the outside in, and see the changes that are occuring here in the U.S., and around the world. THEY GET IT , AND ARE SELLING COOL LOOKING "APPLIANCES" . What we all experienced at the time of the 50's and 60's, and the love affair with the automobile was a one-time phenomenon, that produced some of the most spectacular production cars in history - BUT THOSE DAYS ARE GONE and especially GM and CRYSLER just don't get it, and maybe some of us don't get it either. THE NATIONAL LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE AUTOMOBILE IS OVER - WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. TRUTH IS STILL TRUTH - OUR SOCIETY HAS CHANGED, AND SO HAS OUR VALUES. There are still "Pockets" of people like us, but the masses want an "ECONO-BOX" FAMILY APPLIANCE, WITH GOOD MILEAGE AND SAFETY, good styling, AND A DESCENT PRICE. HENCE ALL THE CUTE LITTLE HONDAS, TOYOTA'S, NISSANS SUBARU'S AND SCIONS. HUH- FUNNY - ALL FOREIGN AND DOING WELL. AFTER THE KIDS GROW UP, THEY BUY A BMW, LEXUS, MERCEDES, ETC. - GO FIGURE .

question about pearl paint
E St. Kruiser50 replied to diymirage's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Hi Gabe . Good questions . First thing you should do is go to the store and get a "BIG BOX OF WHITE PLASTIC PICNIC SPOONS". These are what you experiment on with your paints. They're made of styrene just like your model kits. TIN CANS WORK GOOD TOO, that your canned veggies and so forth come in. Peal off the label, wash, dry, and you can get bigger samples, and learn how to spray an effective paint spray pattern, and get "Your Rythem" for painting. All very important. I never sand anything but the primer. PREP WORK IS THE WHOLE FOUNDATION FOR PAINTING. I've spent years developing how I spray and accumulating a walk in spray booth that is heated, lit and ventilated, good paint products, and good painting equipment. I spray under a very controlled enviornment, that gives me the repeatable results I want. For most here who spray their cars, they don't have these as options, but they sure do help. Warm paint and a warm enviornment really make the paint lay down nicely, so whatever you can do there will help greatly. NOW, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION: SANDPAPER I USE - Go to a store that sells automotive products, and get some wet-or-dry sandpaper. Some places sell it by the sheet - I buy it in packets of 5 sheets from an auto paint supply store. Luckily we have quite a few in the area to choose from - NICE The different brands I've tried pretty much work the same. Like I said, I only sand the primer, but most here do color sanding, and some even sand the clear before polishing. THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT I READ HERE, AND I HEAR IT OFTEN, IS ABOUT ATTACKING AND SHRINKING. YOUR BLACK PULLING UP IS BECAUSE YOU LET IT DRY WAAAAY TOOOO LOOONG, BEFORE THE CLEAR COAT. THE FRESH CLEAR OVER THE DRY BLACK ATTACHED ITSELF AND THEN "SHRANK" , LIFTING THE BLACK - DO OVER. THERE ARE WAYS OF WAITING A LONG TIME BETWEEN COATS, AND GUYS HERE DO IT SUCCESSFULLY >SOMETIMES<, but they always have problems at some point, because THE LONGER YOU LET THE PAINT DRY, THE MORE THINGS CAN GO WRONG. I posted a sort of tutorial on RATTLE CAN SPRAY PAINTING SOME TIME AGO. If you click on my name, them click on options, then click on members topics, you can scroll through to find it. While your there, if you like what you read and want to save it, go to options at the top of the page, click on it, and follow the directions. Hope this helps - dave -
The Dreaded Orange Peel
E St. Kruiser50 replied to Bernard Kron's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I agree with most everything said here by PETE. Every temp. and humidity level has it's own share of challanges, and systems for sucess. Bernard, get yourself the biggest package of white styrene picnic spoons you can find, and start shooting SAMPLES to find what works best for you. THROWING THE SPOONS AWAY IS PAIN-FREE . Usually, as Pete has stated here, ORANGE PEEL (Just for you HARRY ) is usually caused by the paint applicator, air-brush or spray can, being held too far away and paint drying too much before touching the surface. Every coat after that just compounds the problem, and adds to it, and emphasises the appearance of the orange peel even more. Also, waiting too long between coats also hinders the paint from flowing properly. Each coat of paint should contribute to the two or three coats of paint underneath, to flowing well and smoothly together. I always shoot three coats of color or clear - light, medium, heavy - 15 minutes apart. If your clearing, 15 minutes after the last color coat, shoot one medium coat of clear for a "SEALER". Wait and hour, and then do the three steps with the clear, at least once. TOO MUCH PAINT YOU SAY ??? - TRY IT BEFORE YOU JUDGE. OBVIOUSLY, WEATHER CONDITIONS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. A stable spraying enviornment is what will give you the best repeatable results. Unfortunately, most shoot out-doors and deal with the "ELEMENTS", which brings us full-circle to where we started with the "SPOONS . NONE OF THE PAINTS IN MY SYSTEM OF PAINTING ARE EVER ALLOWED TO DRY, USUALLY MORE THAN AN HOUR, AND ALWAYS STAY IN THAT 24 HOUR WINDOW OF TIME. EVERTHING IS PAINTED WET-IN-WET, AND "NOTHING" IS ALLOWED TO DRY UNTIL THE "VERY LAST COAT". -
