Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
"From what I heard from the Alumni Association, there are plans to reintroduce these classes in the future." Good idea! But, it would seem that the classes would consist more of learning to use software as almost ALL of what you describe is computerized now. STILL, vocational training has been neglected for decades on the theory everyone should go to college. No college is a money pit and certainly doesn't guarantee employment! -
what to do with old car magazines
GaryR replied to tubbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You can sell them at swap meets, but otherwise as you found out, you can't give them away. I ended up trashing a bunch from the mid 70's to 90's. They just aren't rare. One possibility is to find out if there a local program to ship stuff to out of country military. Trouble with that is they are heavy and expensive to mail You might be able to give them away if you place an ad. -
The Coleman Brothers car was restored by my internet friend Marty Strode and is, in fact the car in the rear view shot in these Forums under the "60's fuel pump question" in drag models. It lives in (I think) Washington State and appears at the March Meet and CHRR. The two engine thing is Noel Blacks LSR car undergoing testing at Fremont . He was later killed in it. The first one, who knows!!

I've seen those parts Kevin. This will be out of the box...I swear. Guess humor isn't a biggie here on the old MCM forums! -
Scale Modeling and Youth?
GaryR replied to drsnapper55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's some examples of what I've read http://www.autotrader.com/car-news/buying-a-car-how-millennials-do-it-differently-218419 http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2014/10/14/the-many-reasons-millennials-are-shunning-cars/ http://www.npr.org/series/213540069/millennials-and-the-changing-car-culture http://www.autoblog.com/2015/07/25/more-data-shows-that-millennials-dont-like-driving/ http://money.cnn.com/2015/03/15/technology/uber-bill-gurley-sxsw/ If you have a gripe, it's with them, not me. Now I have to provide cites and footnotes on the car model board? LOL- 43 replies

Scale Modeling and Youth?
GaryR replied to drsnapper55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
"I feel like your statements on this thread are inaccurate and overblown. " I never claimed to do research on this, IF you actually read what I wrote, I said according to what I read. I've seen this for several years ALL OVER the web, I didn't invent it. Why are you steamed anyway? As for driverless cars, who you have "met" is irrelevant, I didn't just invent that either. It's all over the news and Google and Tesla are spending a ton of money on them As for Uber, if they only got revenue for being designated drivers and airport ferries they'd already be broke! Again, why are you steamed? It's a simple fact that cars don't mean what they once did. I'm not trashing young people, I'm doing the opposite. It's the older people that imagine young people MUST have the same values they do. I can't begin to imagine WHY you'd take any of this personally, relax a re read what I said.- 43 replies

I still use file folders, but with parchment paper ( made for baking ) between sheets.I have some in plastic archival sheet protectors, but even those can stick to decals. You can fold the parchment paper and make little envelopes for them.

Sob The other day I woke up and someone has painted, in Testors bottle paint, on the bathroom mirror, "Stop me before I sand parting lines again". I SWEAR it wasn't me!! Please say it wasn't me! -

What are these "instructions" you speak of? You use a language not familiar to me. -

There IS hope for you, though not much! I finally have stopped buying stuff, even drag racing stuff AND.....even the 65 Plymouth, which I've been wanting since, well, 1965! Advice: Spend some time building and spend hours here on the MCM site! You can also glue your wallet shut! GOOD LUCK!! -
Hmmmm Some Very interesting remarks from some guys with model company connections! I sat we waterboard Tim Boyd! He OBVIOUSLY know more than he;s telling! Really, nothing wouls surprise me. The hobby has finally natured to include subjects once un thinkable. Now that we don't have WalMart or similar retailers deciding for us, we have benefited greatly! A kit doesn't have to sell a million units, thank God! I'm grateful for the Edsels, the Chrysler 300's, The Hudsons, the 40's Chevy's, the whole lot of niche cars! We have more choices than ever!

Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Correct Mike. I should have said in the United States. I do think the prosperity around the world id both wonderful and short lived. BUT that's an entirely different subject, not appropriate for here. -
Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What I'm saying is.. not a comeback because it never went away. It has changed though, from a kid hobby to an adult one. That's it in a nutshell. -
Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bill, the "last century" might as well be ten thousand years ago to anyone under thirty. That's the nature of being young. Plus, as I said, the 60's were FIFTY years ago! The new 65 Plymouth is a model of a FIFTY YEAR OLD CAR!! It's pretty clear it's for us boomers, not kids!! Again, I think the hobby is at a peak! I'm not sure what everyone seems to be disagreeing about here! -
Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
True mike. Seems like the middle class standard of living is declining, it's possible only the wealthy will afford cars in the future. and you are right, people weren't making models as a hobby, withe possible exception of ship models. -
" Maybe a longshot, but how about adding a photoetch grille and wheel spokes? " Now that's a good one for the aftermarket. seems like Model Car Garage hasn't done any new grilles or detail sets for eons. Not to pick on them, somebody else could do them as well! Are you listening guys?

Are model kits making a comeback? What gives?
GaryR replied to ERIK88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
" "Agreed. Who said otherwise?" YES! People will always build miniatures, but probably not model cars. Jeez, already most modeling subjects are from...the last century! It's going to compare to, for example, building models of horse drawn coaches before long. Again, the MODEL CAR hobby is better than ever! ENJOY IT WHILE WE CAN! -

Strange. I don't see anybody writing off the hobby. The same hand wringing goes on in the real drag racing and hot rodding world. Where's the next generation? How can the NHRA make drag racing as popular as it once was? The answers are simple. TIMES CHANGE. It's not 1965 anymore. NOTHING negative about that in my book, don't see why that's regarded as some downer. It's just a fact. It's not the fate of the world, it's a hobby that's a reflection of the times, the ever changing world. I LOVE cars, models and racing. I don't bemoan their passing into history much though. If that's the course that society takes, so be it We don't shoe horses or churn butter much anymore, WHY belabor the fact that things change. I think again, the hobby is in a great state. Don't get why you think that is "writing it off".
