When did color fall out of favor?
GaryR replied to Lunajammer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually you are correct! When i was reading revues before my wife and I bought her2013 Mazda 6GT, the biggest issue "car reviewers" has was...the size of the touch screen GPS!! LOL!!!! It was deemed "last year" and too small. We haven't had any trouble with it yet! The sales guy , who i think was 13, gushed on all the phone compatible features (She is 58, I am 63).Ok. We usually use the phone for, (silly us) MAKING PHONE CALLS!!!! Between i-Pods, AM, FM and satellite radio and CD's, we pretty much have music covered, ! I don't think he ever even mentioned handling, or driving for fun. GREAT CAR THOUGH! -

Well Tom, In all the San Fernando Valley and my driving in Socal, I have only seen ONE Grabber Blue Mustang with white stripes, and that was a six with the belt stripe and stock wheels. So there is no line of 50 blue Mustangs. A 73 Scamp? Ok! -

Color died because cars are appliances to most people, like a refrigerator, TV or toaster. No character, dull, functional and boring, just like the people that drive them. Then there are the social standing cars, the aforementioned BMW's, Mercedes,....yawn...and Lexis, etc. Soulless machines, to me just not interesting. God, when I grew up you could instantly tell a Ford from a Dodge from a Chevy etc. Now....who cares, cup holders are the crucial feature. It just reflects our conformist culture, ironically, millenials seem to be the most conformist, dedicated consumers, all the while believing they aren't, making them ideal suckers for all sort of propaganda. Jeeez, kids think Hondas are performance cars! LOL But I'm just a cynical old ( 63 ) coot, and after all, LOVE is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru. -

I bought this Mustang partly because of the Grabber Blue color and the White stripes! I have to laugh at most cars in Los Angeles. It's hilarious when some stuck up nut pulls up in a black Mercedes, BMW or Lexis.......just like the 50,000 OTHER black Mercedes, BMW or Lexis! Woo woo! Or white......or silver.same booooooooring stuff. You can't miss my Ford! -
'60s Drag Racing...a real deal reference
GaryR replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My main reference is my memory! Yup, I was only 11 or so when my Dad took me to my first race! I remember going to see the Hawaiian in 1965 after they won the Winternationals. I told Roland Leong that at Famosa a few years ago, he got a real kick out of it since I was 60 at the time! I lived and breathed the drags until the mid 70's. I don't give rats rear about the NHRA "Big Show" nowadays, it just isn't the same. I'll take so called "nostalgia" racing over the boooooring NHRA series any day. Mid 5's at 260 are plenty fast enough! -
Questions about the new '30 Revell Model A kit
GaryR replied to stavanzer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'd use the Buick from the Revell Tony Nancy 22jr roadster. About 5,000 times more detailed than the AMT, plus you can hang any trans you want on it. -
Good work! So tell us HOW you did it? The lace is decals I assume?

Model car builders are cheapskates, right?
GaryR replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't buy high dollar kits, I'm retired and watching the money, but even when I was working I didn't spend a lot. The one exception was $125 for a mint AMT 1964 Gran Prix annual. I got it from a friend whose brother bought it new in 64. After his brothers death, my friend sold off the dozen or so kits he had saved. I bought it because I know for certain it was complete and in perfect shape, and to throw some money to my friend. Other than that, 45 bucks is tops, for a Johan 62 Plymouth. -

Guys, the uncertain T is a goner, so are the tools for the model or it would have been reissued years ago. Steve Scott is an unfortunate guy who has had but one success in his life (apparently) , the Uncertain T. Sadly, he can't let go and lives in a fantasy world. But WHY belabor the point. Scott is a human being, why pile on a man with obvious psychological problems? What is to be gained? This is one of the things i HATE about the internet, the mindless hatred towards people. Just as Scott would be wise to let it go, I think posters here would be as well. -
Glen is a great guy, always good to me. The old location was a real, old, OLD time place. When Glen moved the place, I picked up some superb old fashion "State" decals for cars that had been there for who knows how long! The pics are not the actual decals , but the same thing. Tony's shop on Victory is still there, empty but there. Had mostly RC airplane stuff. Kit Kraft is still OK, but not what it once was. High prices keep me out of there. Smith Brothers is a good shop as well, lots of cars too. My favorite is still Glens place though.

I've been going to Burbank House of Hobbies ever since I moved to Los Angeles 30 years ago! A great friendly place that looks like a hobby shop should, packed shelves, old kit boxes displayed and a Fewdozen airplanes suspended from the ceiling! Robots, space ships, blimps ALIENS!!!! GREAT SERVICE and GREAT PRICES! No, I don't own the place, just the kind of place where you can always have some fun, IF YOU LOVE MODELS!!

If I hit the lottery
GaryR replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd get a beach house in Oregon, a place in Tehachapi, and a place in Palm Springs. I's like to donate to various worthwhile projects. I'd like to have a REAL library with a fireplace! I'd collect WW2 Pacific war artifacts, especially Japanese. as for cars, i can think of a bunch. Practically any American car ever made! 4 doors, everyday drivers more than a ton of muscle cars. 60 Plymouth 9 passenger wagon 50 Plymouth DeLuxe 63 Catalina Wagon 68 Plymouth Sport Sattelite 63 Chevy 62 Chevy 65 Dodge vw Bug 37 Buick 55 Buick it goes on and on/ I'd DRIVE every one of 'em! Oddballs welcome! -
Sitting here watching the Munsters (retirement is great), wondering about the ten Stromberg manifold in the kit. Ten carbs for a 289 is a bit much! I'm wondering about the manifold itself. Detail and accuracy in AMT kits was hit or miss (just like now), is the manifold/engine at all accurate? Could it be converted to a fuel injection manifold? There are no fuel injected small block Fords in any kit that I know of ( weird huh?), so I'd like opinions before I buy the kit! My buying days are pretty much over, kits cost too much and I do have 650 kits to fall back on! I'd like to build Gary Coe's Gunfighter 57 Ford, a car i saw race plenty of times in the 60's. It was powered by a Hillborn injected 289. ALSO, anybody bought the SpeedCity's resin four Ford dragster? How are the heads/ manifolds in that kit? THANKS! Hillborn Ford FI

Pretty much done with resin.
