Ferrari F40 Competizione Monte Shell
dub replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Ooo ooo! My favorite Ferrari! Great progress so far. When I asked about more builds earlier, I figured you had a few but, WOW! This looks like an excellent kit. Any big things wrong with it? I keep seeing this one at my LHS and I'm debating on spending the money. I am too green at the hobby for racing decals, but I can stash it away with the others I am holding until I'm ready. -
Volkswagen Transporter3 Gti Westfalia

I like where you are going with this one. What parts do you plan to use from the Benz? Both of those vehicles are excellent 1:1 cars to drive but expensive to own . That's why they go well together! I would love to build one of those someday. Perhaps I'll find one when I can better afford one. Keep up the good work! -
You did a great job for an "on the road" build! Looks fantastic. Do you have more builds at home over in NL ?
-
Here's my last installment on the build. I tried the black wash with Tamiya acrylic watered down. I'd say that was pretty easy. It looks much better. I need to work on my technique a little but I think my first crack at it was a decent one. I also did the whole assembly; engine and trans. (well you're supposed to, right? ) You can kinda see the interior got a mild shot of it too, in two of these pics. I gotta hang some lights, a shifter and a few other odds and ends and I'm callin' it done! Thanks again, everybody for all the comments and help offered along the way. I know it was a learning experience for more than just me.

The links work for me. Looks pretty good too! I love how dumped it is. I also dig the striped blanket on the front seat. What did you use?
-
Yah, if it were 1:1 and it was mine, I would be right there with ya! It occurred to me when I was making the headers about the noise. Well, that's what earplugs are for! I did some research on the wash last night and that's about what I found out. I do have some mild paint thinner I could use, but I like the water idea more. Water won't lift paint that isn't water based! Thanks for the comments! I should have one more update before it goes Under Glass.

That is lookin' mighty fine, there sir! Your pics must hide what you don't like about the clear, because it looks pretty decent from here. Can't wait to see it 'er done!
-
I'm diggin' it! You gave me a few ideas for the one I have. I'm curious about the engine setup as well.

...and my Scirocco! CAL is right about the trademark costs with VW. Any time you see the VW symbol in the circle with the V on top of the W, It is a registered trademark. VWoA went after all of the dealers who were using it in their dealer logo a few years ago. If they didn't clear the logo with the roundel with VW, then they threatened them with legal action. This included new car dealers who actually held the franchise too! The dealer I work for had to deal with this, so I have seen it first hand. .....as for the takeover; I wouldn't count any chickens before the eggs have hatched. two more of my cents! -
I did a little bit more today. Decided to take all the gauges and the bezel out. .... and I finally finished the grille and radiator: Now for the black wash on the engine...... I have not done it before and I'm worried about the wrong mix of thinner and paint that will take the paint off below. I experimented on the Focus I finished a little bit ago, and it started to take the clear off. I do not want to screw my work up, so what did I do wrong? I am still finishing the controls in the interior, but I won't attempt to do the wash until tomorrow night.

Lookin' sharp, Lyle! Great build as usual. Good timing on the post for dinner too, it's making my mouth water!
-
Bill, your work is phenomenal! I always love to see your progress on any of your builds. You probably think I'm bummed you aren't doing roll-up windows. Nah... I'm not bummed at all, I wanna see it done too! Keep it up, I'm hoping you can make the meeting Saturday so I can drool in public.

Nice! It's definitely one of the meanest builds of the new Revells. Where did the back tires come from?

Got a another update..... I went for the interior this round of building. I wanted to use the buckets in the kit but they didn't fit in between the frame rails and the torque tube. I decided to just use the front bench like Kyle. That, of course, needed some finesse to fit as well. I finally decided on the color too. I was already leaning in this direction, but wasn't sure. V's suggestion helped push me the whole way over. It was a bonus that I already had the paint! It almost looks too classy.... just wait! I also did some minor detailing on the mill. I drybrushed the silver on the valve covers and finished the headers. It sure is starting to take on it's own personality now! The windshield frame is the stock one chopped waaay down and the "glass" is clear acetate. My list of to do's is shrinking everyday. What's left is still fun stuff! I am looking forward to it.

Looks great, Mike! I can't wait to see her all dirty!

This puzzles me too. I am not a big Jetta fan, I guess because I consider myself somewhat eurocentric... (I do think that they are good parts cars...... ) There would ABSOLUTELY be a solid market for that car just from VW owners alone. That's not including us hobbyists. This is one for: " Are you listening?" insert model manufacturer here______ ......................well? -
I love the story behind how Chrysler came up with those letters. The people who name the cars were stuck so Carroll Shelby says: "Why don't you call it GLH for G oes L ike H ell?" The S is for special or sport, I can't remeber....
-
The 2.2L was Chrysler's own. The engine in the kit, however, may not be accurate for the 2.2L, but it isn't the 1.7L either. The valve cover and intake is all wrong. If it's supposed to be the 1.7L it is an approximation. HTH! Oh, and good build! That was one of the few Omni variants that actually demand any respect.

Thanks James! That's funny advice about the dullcote when compared to what a military modeller I bumped into at A.C. Moore tonight told me. He said If I dullcote over top of pastels that you must apply them heavier to begin with because it tones the colors down. It almost sounds right because when Virgil built Frankie, the colors changed on him too. I will go with your method, though, because I can see your scenario happening to me! It sounds like that stuff you and Jairus mention will work. I don't know if I will spend the dough on it now. Maybe after the holidays....

Well, even after all that progress, I still managed to get more done last night. Lack of exhaust was bugging me so I had to do something about it. The look I wanted, was the zoomies to look like a pair of old drag headers from a rod with the collector pipe cut off and the whole shebang header coated. As you can see, they were also quite easy to make. Hey, they nailed the effect I wanted; whatever works! Here's a few more pics.... I need to shoot some interior pieces and finish assembling the engine next. Then I can play with the new pastel set I picked up! Til the next round!

You definitely have some eclectic tastes, Bill. That's not a bad thing though! I can say I share in your interest of this one..... nissan figaro: This one I'd like to see someone else build! maserati typo 60 aka birdcage: I'm really surprised Tamiya or Fujimi hasn't jumped on this one...... I wonder if its licensing rights or something..... lotus elise/exege: ....and this one is a really cool car as well. I have seen it before but I forget what powers it. brabus smart car: As for what I would like to see kitted is actually only one subject I can come up with being fairly new to the hobby. I know there are other people who would buy more than one of them, too. How about Fujimi or Tamiya kits an 82-88 VW Scirocco? That's a pretty obscure one but I know I'm not alone in the desire. -
I'm sure Bill will chip in when he sees this and Marc may have already beat me to it, but here goes..... The Nesco American Harvest is what I use. I got it at Mal-Wart for about $45 a few months ago. It was the only one the two stores in my town carry and, neither one had any in stock on my first trip. Other stores would have been OK for multiple trips, but I hate that place..... Sorry for the rant..... The dehydrator has a thermostat on the top and mine stays at 105F always as per Bill's advice. I did modify one tray by cutting out some of the webbing to fit bodies in it. The trays are close together when in use normally. I need to get a few extras so I can make a few with no tray webbing at all to fit bigger parts in. Another use I have thought about is for spray can guys to heat the cans in it too. I'm a little apprehensive, but the can's labels state no heat over 120F. That's 15F lower, why not? Don't hesitate to get one if you think it's a good idea. It was the best $45 I've spent on the hobby yet, hands down. HTH!

Thanks, Parki I appreciate it! I should get this done either by Sunday night or early in the week. For the locals, I will definitely bring it to the club meeting, in whatever shape it is in, next Saturday. Here's where I stopped last night. I will post more later tonight after I get done running errands.

Cool so far! I like the color too. The wheels are much better than what came in the box! Can't wait to see it finished!

OOOO! That's an excellent tip! I have seen that adhesive and wondered if there was a practical use for it. Thanks!
