  1. Thanks guys. This is only my second attempt at weathering. I guess I'm doing better than I thought! I have two on the bench at the moment, Raul. I think I'm gonna use the frame leftover from this build for another quickie, but I'm not sure. I could get back to work on the 31 Tudor I chopped the top on.... I'll figure it out sooner or later!
  2. Our fictional 1:1 builder here is a dry lakes racer from sourthern Cali. around 1950-5. One day while out at an aviation junkyard looking for belly tanks, he stumbles across a stock 29 Model A roadster painted olive drab with a star on each door. He thinks it must have belonged to a general in the past and decides it would make a cool hotrod. He drags it home and locates a yard with a 32 V8 engine. When he comes home this time he brings home the engine, tranny, grille assembly with rad, and a set of wire wheels. After a few weekends he's running around town with this creation: I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed building it! These rods are just too fun and I can't stop building them. This one just fell together. Every time I worked on it, more got done. I will definitely be doing more rod builds for a while. Parts list: Body, interior and windshield are from the 60s issue AMT 29 Roadster gluebomb; frame and suspension are Revell's 31 tudor; engine, grille assy., wheels and tires, steering wheel and exhaust are from AMT's 32 Vicky; tail lights are Revell's new 32 sedan; and headlights are Revell's 32 3-window.
  3. Man that hit the spot!!! I can imagine that some of your scale creations would sound (and move) like this were they 1:1's. Thanks for the adrenaline! ;)
  4. Great job for spare parts! I always love the "practice" builds the most because they are just that: practice. Screwing up is no big deal. Especially if all the parts are spare! I have something like this planned for the frame leftover from my gluebomb rebuild I'm finishing up right now. Keep the pics coming, I like your style!
  5. The "box" painted engine color that the chrome header tank is sitting on encloses the plugs, wires, coil(?) and dizzy.
  6. It sounds like a 1600 or an 1800cc engine. Man, I forgot those Starlets were rear drive! That driver wasn't using the clutch on any of those full throttle shifts, ya know. That was a technique pioneered by the quattro drivers back in the 80s. Right foot to the floor, left foot operating the brake, arms rowing the wheel and the stick.... Wow! Serious as a heart attack!!! I'm sorry, other race drivers just don't have it. These guys don't usually go over 85-90mph(gearing maxes out around 115 usually) but, they are perilously close to lots of trees that don't give during impacts very well. All of this on roads that never see traffic moving faster than about 25mph because they aren't paved! Baja is about the only thing close and there aren't many trees in the desert.
  7. The first time I saw this one, it was at the club picnic. It was also my first meeting, so I didn't know what I was looking at. I'm glad this came back up. I think this thing is sweet! Didn't realize how much work went into it; man, good job!
  8. Thanks again, guys! The grille shell and insert are indeed the AMT 32 setup, Gray. I wanted to keep it old, and that tooling certainly is old!
  9. Got another update. I decided to mix up a black wash and see what I could do with the grille insert. Of course, I had to do the engine while I was at it.... Oh, I almost forgot. I rigged up the headlights finally. The lights are the big pair from the Revell 32 3 window coupe. I made the stalk mounts out of wire bent to match each other. I managed to get 'em pretty straight, with the right one drooping a slight bit. I'm happy with it. Only a few more things left to do. Steering wheel/column, shifter, tail lights, weathering and a few minor tidbits and she's done!
  10. Darn it, Virgil! I try to stay away from B&D because all of the diorama action will divert me from my car building. I want to build a few dioramas to eventually add in to an HO train layout when I finally get the space. Right now though, I have a backlog of cars to build stuck in my creative center that have been waiting too long to come out! Maybe this PB jar lid or even a coffee can dio is the way to quench the dio craving..... What I should be thinking about is a photo backdrop dio for the rods I'm building. The street scene you showed when you finished Frankie is what I was thinking. Anyway, very cool work and good work with the diversions, too!!!

    Martini 917

Looks great, Dale! I hope you can make the next meeting. I'd love to get a few pics of that thing, not to mention check it out without the camera! 917's are a favorite of mine, and yours hits the spot!
  12. Absolutely top of the pile! Definitely your best effort yet. Only one problem.... We expect you to go this far or more from now on! Seriously, after that build, you should find a snapper to throw together! It would be a good break. Keep up the great work!
  13. Great, imaginative work as usual, Virgil! I do have one question though. Does the Cafe serve scrapple? You ought to work that van of yours into one of the roadside attractions. Don't worry, I won't mention the horse leaving the K & J Kruize in it...... Oops!
  14. Nice! Excellent choice and I'm happy you reduced the yellow content. Yellow and blue go together, but one must use restraint. My brother keeps using yellow accents in inappropriate places on the small fleet of 1:1's in our care. I just wanna smack him! He definitely got mom's taste.... bad!

    Gold'n Duece

    Excellent build! Nailheads rock!

    Evny Integra Type R

I like this one too! I usually don't like Japanese cars, but you did an excellent job with this one. You used the color to attract attention, not tons of stickers and a loud color. Makes for a just right package. I'm also surprised to see the interior color compliment the paint so well. Not something I might put together, but really works!
  17. I am still a newbie to the scene but I can say that I've noticed even the "big" resin casters are usually one person doing the casting work. Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland is that way. Norm is a one man show from what I've seen and I'm sure my observations are not too far off. I'm sure Lyle can offer more on that topic, as the two are good friends. I'll bet Jimmy Flintstone doesn't have too many people on the payroll either. What about Modelhaus and some of the others?
  18. Yeah, now that I have all kind of adhesives, I get to fix more broken ceramics than I used to. I can think of a few uses for the 5 minute epoxy in the garage too. I haven't painted any thing yet, but I know I won't have any problems with it now!
  19. Thanks again, Raul! The windshield trick is a cool one but I am going to wait to do it on a different build down the road sometime. After seeing yours, I know I can do it, I just don't want to dedicate the time on this one. I have a chopped 31 Tudor that I need to get back to work on. This thing won't let me until I finish it first!
  20. Well, I've been working on this thing pretty steadily since the last update. I finished mounting the suspension to the frame. I had to lengthen the torque tube to reach the tail of the trans. With that done, I could mount the engine in the frame after giving it a coat of paint. I'm using the exhaust from the kit the engine came in and was surprised to see they fit with some minor reshaping. I'm even surprised I managed to compensate the one side to accommodate the starter without realizing it. This is the only half I've done yet. It was so fiddly, I had to stop once I got one side done so I wouldn't get too bent out of shape. I need to get a better pair of tweezers for this stuff. Here's another mockup pic. Still lots to do yet, but it's getting there.
  21. Nice old build! THANK YOU for not using the ZR1 taillights like everybody and their brother uses on old trucks! Your Vette theme is just the right amount of Vette parts in the right places to work out perfect. With the exception of the wheels, the whole package is timeless. They are the only thing tying the build to the nineties. Wheels are funny like that, even in the 1:1 world. There are many cars out there, if you changed the wheels every say, 10 years, they would remain eternally fresh. Too bad it isn't always as easy in the scale world!
  22. I'm with Billy on this subject. I must get this out of the way first, however.... I HATE NASCAR! BUT... I am not saying get rid of it. And I'm certainly not complaining about it. I know there is plenty of interest here for it as proved by the response so far. I actually was wondering why there wasn't any already. Please don't judge my opinion negatively, though. Not everybody has to like everything. If so, the world would be a pretty boring place. If I don't like something, I don't have to comment or even look at it. What my post here is about, is since this site already has broad categories, why not just make a section for race car subjects in general? Put sports car racers, NASCAR, and drag cars in the same area. This would keep this place from turning into one of the places many of us left behind or won't go to at all. Any better ideas?
  23. The stuff you seek is 2-part clear epoxy. You can get it at most craft stores. It comes in a two-tube syringe and one unit will last you for a few years. Just mix some of the two parts on an index card or such and use a tooth pick to apply it. It stinks, but it will hold for as long as we'll be inhabiting this planet without any fogging or dire effects. Hope this helps!
  24. Please, NO! I can feel a headache coming on already...
  25. Thanks for the info and tips, Curt! The grille shell is only sitting there in mockup form. Don't worry, I know the grille looks like ###### if it's higher than the cowl. I'm just mounting it lower on the frame on this one. As for the tires.... I wanted this one to have matched size tires because it's early 50's low-buck and not just for straight line speed. This driver likes to go around corners fast! (on a budget, though. ) Besides, when it's finished, everything will make better sense. I have plans......
