Finding some “old” kits
fordf-100 replied to fordf-100's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mark thanks for the info on these kits, I kind of thought they were from the war but I wasn't sure they would have been producing anything like this even out of wood during the war but I guess it was a good "moral" boost for the young kids at home! -
Finding some “old” kits
fordf-100 replied to fordf-100's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
These are really cool models, I have been thinking of making a copy the west kraft jeep and try to cut out my own and build it! I thing it would be pretty easy to trace all the precut parts and transfer them onto wood or even plastic. The wheels might be a little hard for me to cast but I might be able to find an old toy that the wheels would work. My friend Dave had some really cool old kits , my favorite was a Monogram B-17 that was mostly wood and had some red plastic engine cowling and props along with some other stuff in plastic, it was from a little later I guess since it had plastic parts but it was really cool! I would like to have gotten that kit but it was very pricey! Dave was an old time modeler who was really skilled and was into a lot of things, he had a neat little shop in his basement with a couple small lathes and a small mill and just was very talented at making stuff. His son lives there now and does some really good restorations on cars and bikes. -
I have been organizing some of my models to try and make some more room for all the great kits that will be out soon and I came across these kits that I got from a very good friend and a great modeler when he passed several years ago. Dave had some of the coolest stuff I have ever seen, his main focus was trains and boy he had some awesome stuff! So I just thought I would post these kits cause I think they are really cool from the box art to the way the kits are made. Let me know what you guys think of these! my favorite is the west Kraft super jeep, it is missing some parts but I think it is cool! It has the tires molded in a hard material not sure what it is, the instructions say copyright 1943 so I’m not sure when it was made. It came with olive drab dope and glue and precut parts! the bazooka came in the mail with the 3 cent stamp! It just is some dowel rod and a few other parts! the ez Kraft jeep is pre cut and the tires are cardboard that are multiple parts, I didn’t want to open the bags that Dave put these in so as not to loose anything. the amphibian jeep is also an ez Kraft pre cut kit, I didn’t want to open it up as it is wrapped in wax paper! I just thought these are really cool and wanted to share them and see what you guys think!

To clarify I have trouble telling them apart when they have vey little warp, most are pretty easy to spot! -

I also stay away from the early promos that warp, that’s why I was a little concerned about this 58, I sometimes have a little trouble telling them apart but everyone here gave me some good tips to make sure I’m getting a kit! -

Steve that is a beautiful 58! As all of your stuff is! What hubcaps did you use? Those early interiors are very shallow, this was missing a dash and steering wheel, I picked a dash up on eBay and I’m sure I have a parts box steering wheel that should look ok. The missing window might be a little troublesome because I have tried to make replacements for some other 50’s kits and I struggle with it, they never fit! -
1958 Ford promo or kit?

Mark, what year was the first AMT styrene promos made? Was it 61 or 62? Were the 58 kits and promos made from the same molds or did they require different molds due to the acetate or styrene? Just curious! -
1958 Ford promo or kit?
fordf-100 replied to fordf-100's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks David! This does have the axle blocks glued in the frame but they are the larger diameter axles with only 1 ride height choice. The chassis looks as if it was screwed to the body. Hopefully I will be able to find the missing parts! -
1958 Ford promo or kit?

Thanks Mark! Didn’t even think about a metal chassis! -
Hi all, I figured someone on here could maybe give me some insight on a recent kit? I picked up at a show. It is a 58 Ford that had a good thick coat of paint, white on top and metallic blue on the bottom with trim painted gold. I thought it was a kit as there is no warping at all showing, a very light twist to the body. When I got home and took a closer look I wasn’t sure it actually was a kit. I am not real familiar with these early promos or kits other than most promos I’ve seen have a lot of warping and shrinking. The reason I thought it might be a promo is the inside was painted which as I understand helps stop warp age. So when I stripped it I was looking on the inside of the body and I had thought the early kits had “partial holes” underneath to open up for mirrors, antenna and custom stuff. This does not have any and the underside is not smooth. I know it’s not resin, this may sound stupid but it “sounds” like styrene, I ground a little from the inside and it smelled like styrene and I glued the crack in the windshield. The frame and interior are only slightly brush painted and show no warping at all. I would appreciate any opinions/comments, if it’s a promo I may put it up for trade but if it’s a kit I would like to try and restore it. It has some sanding done on the body and might make a nice custom! Thanks!

Model car world, I think for the most part they just do paints but I could be wrong!
-
Yep you are right! Missed that and I built it!,,???

It went on nice, the color was called a Milano maroon metallic, the metallic was very fine. As with most of my paint jobs the problem was me! I just didn’t get the hood even color with the rest of the car, this is cleared with 2 part automotive clear and I just thinned it with cheaper lacquer thinner. I also recently used one of their lacquers and I liked that a lot!

This is Revells 1941 Chevy pickup. A few months back I was vending at a local model show and as we were packing up there were a couple of ladies selling their dads collection, some nice stuff and good deals, bought quite a few things! Anyway they asked if I wanted this as it was damaged from packing up and the front axle was busted, the bed was off and a few parts missing, I said sure and thanked them! All I did was fix the axle glue a couple loose items and a little detail painting like the grille wash, the wood in the bed and a couple other minor things. Whoever built this did a great job as it has a fantastic paint job (a couple small scratch’s but that’s it). Have it on displayin my case!

This is the Mobius 64 Nova, this was a really nice kit that went together really well, any issues with this build were of my own doing! This was the first time I used MCW enamel paint, very nice paint but again the paint didn’t come out that well due to my own fault, the hood doesn’t quite match the body even though I painted them at the same time. Next time I will tape the hood from the inside and paint with it on the body. Anybody that has any tips for this please let me know! I used some Cragar wheels with the AMT parts pack gold line tires. These are nice but the tires didn’t fit with a “positive” location so I epoxied them in. Comments always welcome!
