Prep Process--What's Yours?
tabsscale1 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Usually here is what i do 1. After opening the box get body and everything that goes on the body out. 2. Remove all mold lines and fill sink marks and then sand the body. ( I have never in over 20 years washed a body as i usually wet sand the whole body) 3 . By this stage i have figured out waht color i want to paint the body so it gets primed. 4. I then shoot the color or colors. 5. while paint gasses Out I prep everything else by removing all mold lines and mock up the suspension if using after market wheels. 6. Do the interior In a color cordinating color to the body. 7. usually by this time I can cklear the body. 8. Assemble engine and add plumbing and details if going that far. 9. Assemble the model add details as i go. -
Heck it takes me two weeks looking at the kit before i start on one!! Looks like a nice clean build!

tabsscale1 replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wheni used it ididn't soak into the duplicolor primerit just ran off. then whenit did stick it. It had like air bubble in it like the old testors enamel used to do. For $7.50 I'll buy the Duplicolor and have three times the paint for less.I threw away all the Tamiya paint i had -
Tamiya's New Primer is out
tabsscale1 replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll just stick with my Duplicolor primer or my can of Automotive primer that i have. only paid $5 for my duplicolor last year and if i remember right is was buy 1 get one free. I have had no luck with Tamiya paints except for the water base stuff. Every can of Tamiya i ahve tried always turns out like the old testors enamels. -
Auto Paint help
tabsscale1 replied to Jocache83's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ifyou knowthe brand and if it is a lacquer paint all you need is lacquer thinner. I wouldn't know for sure but any hardener may work. For the clear though eurothene clear would work over it. -

Gene Wifiled is known for paint fades from way back. That 57 I am doing was painted on a 57 by Larry Watson. He did some wonderful paint jobs. Those 2 i showed are John D'Agostino cars. This is a gene Winfield paint job and the next one is a Larry watson paint job -

So you want something like this. Omly drawback as i had to strip it the other night and starting it all over. -
Soaked mine in 91% alcohol paint came off last night but the primer and body putty is a little tougher just satrted softing up tonight. Put it in Super clean will see what happens

I have used the Spaz tix paint and it does need a gloss black as a basecoat. To me it was just as good as the Alclad. But neither is very good if the basecoat is not flawless

Black gold also sells premixed and mix yourself HOK paints. here is their website. http://www.blackgoldweb.com/

The Hl near me tries to get some of the newr stuff but i was in there a couple weeks ago lookingfor a kitand the didn't have it. the manager happened to be walking by and asked if i needed help. i told him i was looking for a kit but Revell isn't producing that kit right now. He said that he would order any kit i wanted as long as it was a current kit.

Favorite brand of paint?
tabsscale1 replied to greymack's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I use what ever suits my fancy at the time. Use duplicolor for primer on all projects though. I just shot an eurothane over some HOK which wasshot over a basecoat of duplicolor. Only paint i have not liked is the Tamiya paintsHad better luck with Testors enamels than i ever did with the Tamiya paints. -
Body filler - long term options?
tabsscale1 replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I to used to use the blue or green filler but was throwing about the same amount away. I did go to a body supply store and found some i like that the person in the store said was just as good as the 3m stuff. It was like $8 and the tube was about 1/3 the size as the 3m stuff. -
I will probably end up buying about a dozen of these and have several diffeserent ways to build them . With the chop done already that saves me some work already. I do hope that they do come out with a stock version as well and will probably buy a dozen of those as well. I know some will be 50's and 60's style customs and will also build some ina modern style street rod.
