Will Revell restock their current race car kits?
Plowboy replied to jchrisf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
No way to know. I got a shock the other day on ebay when I saw a '69 Nova SS by Atlantis. I had no idea that that kit was in the deal with Revell. There may be others they have that we don't know about. -
1970 Dodge Challenger Trans Am
Plowboy replied to mark 23's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That one isn't. It's 1/25 and based on the diecast that Monty mentioned. -
I finally got a little time to work on this thing. I was waiting for the embossing powder I ordered to come in so that I could finally be done with the floorpan. It's by WOW and is the super fine grade. Pretty much the same texture I was getting with baking soda. The color wasn't close at all. So, I had to paint it. I thought putting it over black would get it closer. But, it didn't. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Now, I can make some decent progress hopefully. The underside. One issue I had to deal with on the chassis was the front track. It was way too narrow. Plus, the right side was worse than the left. The fix was simple. I just added 1.5 mms on the left wheel back and 2.5 on the right.

Thanx Paul! I may do a McGee "tribute" roadster to set next to it someday. My original idea was actually for the roadster. But, I decided to go with the 3-W instead.

That sounds a lot like Moebius. Their Ford pickups have horrible proportions and loaded with inaccuracies. IMO, at least the Trumpeter kits look much closer to the full scale than theirs do. I can't recall ever seeing a Trumpeter Nova built and have only seen maybe three of the Falcons. I may have to see what I can do with one of the Falcons soon.

That came out looking nice David! Makes me want to build one for myself. Nice work!
-
So did I. Like others have mentioned, the price was the problem for me. At the time they were realeased, they were almost triple the price of AMT and Revell kits IIRC. I have Nova and it's quite detailed. But, I never have had the desire to tackle it. I also have both versions of the Falcon. They don't have near the detail of the Nova. I bought all of them on ebay for about the same price as when they were new. Not much more than current kits. I was just shocked at the prices they're going for now. Another kit I was shocked by the price it went for was the Meng F-350. I put one on my watch list when I saw it and it was approaching $100. It sold for $189.99 and it was an open kit!

Nice looking '37 Jim! I really like that color!

Does Trumpeter not do reissues? I was on ebay last night and saw the Street/Strip '65 Falcon with a bid of $90 plus $44 and change for shipping (from Australia) and couldn't believe that some are willing to pay that price for that kit! Then I did some checking around and found the cheapest for that version was $59.99 plus shipping. The convertible and Ranchero could still be found for a reasonable price. I also looked up the '63 Nova and all were over $100. So, it got me wondering why Trumpeter has never reissued their automotive kits? I know they have some issues. But, nothing that can't be fixed fairly easily. Just wondering why only one issue?

Nice looking Torino Tom! My brother had one that was a pale yellow (probably Phoenician Yellow) with black stripes and interior. I'd like to build a replica of it someday. But, it's hard to give the money these command.

He omitted it for a reason. That's how it appears at that angle. If you look at your model at the same angle, you won't see all four headlights. Just the three.
-
Thanx! Yeah, they're kinda like the vents on the hood. Only noticeable at certain angles. But, when your eye catches it......

Thanx! This is the best I could do with my tablet and sucky lighting. If the shocks were a brighter color, they would show better in photos. They show up well in person. I did a mockup with the COPO hubcaps and steel wheels. I definitely don't like them on this model. So, I'll be sticking with the Rallies.

What is the best method for steering column
Plowboy replied to MrMiles's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
On steering columns that attach to the dash and firewall, you can drill a small hole in the end of it, glue a pin inside (styrene rod or metal) and then drill a corresponding hole in the firewall. You'll have a positive mount that will make it easier to locate/glue. On steering columns that mount only to the dash, just glue it to the dash before install. -
I've been wanting to do one of these for years. But, never have got around to it. When I do get around to it, I plan on using an AMT '95 short bed and an MPC Bronco. Just have to swap the front clip and cowl on the cab. Change the interior. Then back date the bed with the Broncos fender arches and tail lights. The tricky part will be the tail gate. Way better frame, floorpan and suspension details also.

Thanx guys! I now have a roller chassis! Everything went together better than I expected. I figured I would have some issues with the coil springs. But, they caused no problems. One issue I did have was with the drag link/tie rods. It was too wide and gave the front wheels a severe toe in. I narrowed it down by cutting each tie rod loose with my thicker razor saw and simply gluing them back on. I also had to cut away the stabilizers so the wheels could turn. I added disc brakes to the back side of the wheel backs. I still have to do some detail painting here and there, sand the tires and add valve stems to the wheels. I want to see what the steel wheels and COPO hubcaps look like before I commit though. I wasn't sure how the red interior would look with the Maroon body. But, I like it! Once everything is finished and detailed, it'll really come together. I'm not too happy with the fit of the boot at the front. But, I had to fix the quarters in that area to look right with the top. I'll probably never have it displayed with the boot anyway. So, no biggie. The body has been cleared. Just have to sand and polish. I did my scripts different this time. I used to foil them before paint. I was rarely satisfied with how they looked. This time, I foiled them before the last coat of paint. They look a lot more crisp to me. Once I polish off the paint, I think they'll look really nice. I didn't foil the letters on the hood. I can paint those. Still a ways to go. But, it's getting there!

That's a cool little buggy David! I bought one of these years ago. But, never have got around to building it.

A Couple Of Questions About Embossing Powder
Plowboy replied to Plowboy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanx Steve! Your Impala wagon interior is what prompted me to give the embossing powder a try. If I can get results similar to yours, I'll be happy! I plan on doing a test with it before I commit to putting it on my floorpan. -

Thanx Tom! I figured it could be painted over. -
A Couple Of Questions About Embossing Powder
Plowboy replied to Plowboy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It won't if it's sealed with primer and paint. I've done several models with it. -
If ever a model deserved the moniker "work of art", this is it! Exceptional work!

I've never used it before. I've always used baking soda. But, I thought I would give it a try on my current project. First question is, can I use Future to bond it to the styrene? I've learned with the baking soda that it gives me better control concerning thickness and doesn’t pool like white glue will. Second question is, can I paint it with spray paint? I ordered a canister that I think will match my interior color. But, if it's way off, I'd like to know if I can paint it to match. If it's only off by a shade, I can deal with it. The powder I ordered is by WOW and is a super fine grade. I'm hoping it's similar to baking soda as far as texture and thickness.

Aluminum paint for mag wheels
Plowboy replied to Steamboat's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Several years ago, I bought a can of Plasti Kote Aluminum paint. It works great for the aluminum look. But, it's no longer available. That said, I'm 99% sure that Dupli Color makes an aluminum paint also. I know they make a chrome paint. This is what the Plasti Kote Aluminum looks like on a bumper.
