Got the wicked gold on the body yesterday but I had the wrong recipe at first and that ended up my messing up the back of the hood. So, I will try to repaint the hood today. should turn out okay when I get the clear on the body. The wicked gold has a nice depth to it and sparkle as well that is not that evident in the photo below. Most golds are pretty dull and almost look like beige. For an acrylic paint the Createx paints are really good and easy to use even in humid weather.

Jack and Gerald. Thanks, but that's not the Southern 500 car that I'm doing. I know what it looks like I just have to fix it. The car changed a lot all through the year. It's the only one with red bumpers, red interior and a completely different door number font. It's also the greatest victory he had that year beating David Pearson with 8 laps to go after slugging it out with him all day.

I just realized by checking some front YouTube photo's of the real car at Darlington 500 that the center of the grille did not have a border down the middle of the grille. bummer. I just thought I was through with the grille. I will have to completely re do it. Oh well, if I don't it will bug the heck out of me. I still have plenty of mesh and styrene to fix it. Better to find it now before the build was completed.

I noticed in my photos that the mesh material pixilates funny depending on what angle you take the picture. I added borders to the grille mesh material, and it looks much better. I just need to prime the borders and paint them aluminum trying not to get any paint on the mesh. I will need to touch up the red paint on the bumper due to all the handling I've had to do to add the mesh. I should finally be finished with the grille/bumper assembly.

I was looking through my stash for some q-tips and found some mesh material that is the correct color so I won't have to paint it, and the holes will remain open. I installed it but need to work on the fit a little more and add a border around it to hide the rough edge from cutting it out. Don't know what the original purpose is for this mesh material, but someone sent it to me many moons ago and I don't remember who it was but thank them very much for doing so. Looks like I might get a window of opportunity this afternoon to paint the gold on the body.

Daniel, those wheels and tires are a great improvement over the originals. Black and gold is always a great two-tone combination because of the nod to Smokey Yunick.. He had a number 22 65 Chevy that he campaigned in late 1965 early 66 before he switched to the Chevelle. You've done a great job on this build and should be proud of it.

Got the black stuff painted and body masked for gold. Black turned out kinda glossy which I did not expect because I mixed the paint exactly the same as the red which came out a matte finish. The only thing I can think of is the humidity might have been a little higher, so it made the flow improver more active in the mix. It had rained a lot that day before I went out to paint. Whatever the reason it will be okay.

I agree, Keven. Pierre's grille is awesome. If I can get mine anywhere close to that I will be happy.

Looks pretty close to me, Bruce. Nice tight fit of the cage to the roof. Time to finish this one up and send her to the showroom.

I might be able to use a 70-micron paint strainer mesh. Harbor freight sells them, and I think if I painted some of that material aluminum the holes would be big enough to let the black background through. I don't do Amazon. Because of them I will miss out on 5 nascar cup races with their streaming service prime. And my Favorite driver won the Coke 600. My old TV is not set up for streaming. I like my old DirecTV set up with a DVR for taping and watching later. I also blame NASCAR too thanks to their greed.

I wonder if a home improvement center would sell screen material small enough to pass for a grille on a 1/25 scale model. If this screen wasn't brass or whatever it is. it would work.

Thanks, Pierre. I got outside late yesterday after the rain finally stopped and painted all the black items on the car. Will post pictures later. I have been having trouble painting the mesh screen. I can't keep the tiny holes from clogging up. Do you have any suggestions how to paint the screen aluminum without clogging up the screen holes. I want the black background to show through. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Thanks, Steve. I'm getting more and more confident in a good outcome with this one.

Started working on the grille. I found some mesh material about the same size as the plastic grille mesh. Somebody that I can't remember now but it was probably 15 years ago sent it to me. It has something to do with the filtration system on a fish tank. The photos below show how I used masking tape to get the size of the mesh I need, and also shows that I sanded off the plastic mesh and will paint that black. I will color the new metal mesh with a light coating of aluminum paint and try not to clog up the holes in the mesh so the black can show through. I will attach the mesh with tiny dots of canopy glue just at the 4 corners of the mesh. I will then add strips to the borders of the mesh to clean up the look of it all. If you can understand what I just posted, you are better than me. I just hope it works and gets rid of the usual toyish look of a kit grille that has been left alone.

Thanks, Kevin. I appreciate your thoughts on the build.

Got the masking off the body and cleaned up the airbrush for my next chance to paint, if the weather gives me one. I need to paint all the black items this time. In the meantime, I can work on the grille and the engine.

Looks awesome, Bruce. Really like the molding holes in the front fenders. Adds a lot of authenticity to the build. 57 Fords are one of my favorite all time cars. They really looked cool when they came out in 57. Long and low compared to the 56 version.

As a famous builder would say, yup.

Thanks, Mike for stopping by to weigh in on the build. Yes, the Createx has a lot of options as far as colors and types of paints you can get in acrylic paint. I for one really like the wicked lineup of paints they offer and when you get through the paint looks like any good enamel or lacquer paint job out there without the hazard to your health the others might cause. Cleanup of the airbrush can be done on the kitchen table with isopropyl alcohol instead of a lacquer thinner or whatever you would have to use to clean up an enamel job using an airbrush. Plus, Hobby Lobby sells it which is convenient for me.

Thanks, Donato. It's been relatively fun so far compared to the last build. If I can figure out the grille it should be smooth sailing to the end as long as the decals don't come apart or something weird when I go to put them on. I don't know how old they are, but they have been in a zip lock bag since I got them so since they are high quality power slide decals I'm thinking they will be okay.

Thanks, Carl. I'm pretty pleased so far with my results. Hopefully the gold will turn out as well as the red did. I still have a group of black things to paint as well. This sure is more fun than having to paint each and everything with a bristle brush.

Had a really good day for painting yesterday high 80's and humidity at 66%. Wind only 10mph but mostly still, which I kind of wished it had stayed a slight breeze. But for southeast Texas this time of year that is very weird but good weather. I masked everything that needed masking and shot all the red areas of the build. I'm really loving this air brush and the Createx paint. I have finally got a good mix going that keeps the tip from drying up through the whole painting session. I mix up a 10-gram batch with 2 different reducers and 10 drops of my own flow improver made from dish detergent. It makes the paint flow out better without making the paint run. Not a hint of orange peel either. Its slightly dull but when I shoot some acrylic Tamiya clear after I shoot the gold it should give me a nice gloss for decaling. I now need to mask for shooting the gold and wait for another good day. In the meantime, I can fix the grille and hand paint some small stuff and the engine and put it together and make an air cleaner that looks more authentic for this car. The rear bumper on this particular car was red and the front bumper was half red and chrome. Have no idea why.

Thanks, Pierre. I think I have a mesh that will work. Hope the bug hits you quickly. That Ferrari sounds like a project that will be a feast for our eyes out here in mediocrity land . I will be on the lookout at the wip section where you usually are found. I'm guessing that is where it will be.
