What motivates you to build?
FASTBACK340 replied to rbarton's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow... what motivates me? Hmm... after several years away from the hobby I can tell you first hand it's in my blood, and I've missed it dearly. I love creating. Doesn't matter if it's a model, music, or one of my 1:1 rides, I love seeing an idea through. Writing a good song is just as satisfying as a killer paint job. A killer paint job is as good as the jumping off point of the NEXT project. Seeing it come together is the payoff. As a side note, my hobby room is cleaned! After the holidays I'll assess what I need as far as fresh supplies and I'm back in..... Besides, model building is a WHOLE LOT cheaper than filling the garage & yard with full size money-pits! -
Hey Gregg thanks for posting the pictures! I know how much of a VW nut you are. And of course I'll have to get at least one myself!

I'll add my .02. I have a `74 Dart I used as a bang-around car.A 2 dr. slant 6-auto in pretty good condition. It attracts attention when ever I go out with it but it's a liability too. It has 90 HP slipping through an automatic gearbox. It only has 82K on it, but it moves like it has a million miles. Slow as a mailbox.... After building the Barracuda I wasn't about to build another V-8 project. So I bought a Maxima. It's 11 yrs. old with over 100K on it, but she's in mint condition (I'm the second owner...) and is the loaded sport model with white gauges, spoiler, alloys, and heated leather setas. Sun roof, ABS, fuel injected V-6 and automatic. Throw in 4 wheel disc brakes and a bullet-proof reputation and it's hard to argue with technology! BTW: Aside from my Barracuda, which is as throw-back as you can get... I work for Infiniti. Want to talk about new-car technology? I have day's I come home with headaches....

So... what your saying is this is a multi-media kit with plastic & wood?

Mopar Muscle retro (the way it was)

Thanks for the heads-up Terry. I'm also on the look-out for the Hot Rod Deluxe special edition. Man I love that magazine, especially the retro cover girls .... -
I hear ya... We're all guilty of dreaming and then we get side tracked with the next dream. Take your time, but please finish it.

Wow... I saw this bumped up and was hoping we made progress. Dave, how's it coming along?
-
But Art...when can we get one?

WOAH! Beautiful workmanship! Absolutely ^%$#$%^ beautiful!

If you don't wear underwear you'll never have THAT problem again! Welcome back & good luck re-adjusting. Looking forward to learning from your builds... -
Toss the AMT pig.... The Revell version is so much better. Why handicap yourself with a bad kit?
-
Ummm.... Full cage... 2.0 turbo motor....Centerlines....Slicks.... The car I was going to build before I found my Barracuda. I'll buy more than I'll ever build too....

While I had zero interest in the Hudson (aside from the Moebius commitment to a good job...) I'm anxious to get ahold of the Chrysler. Looks like a neat piece....

Skills Dude.... you got skills. Underhood bracing is exceptional. Nice touch. Nice job on the body mods too.

Spent the better part of the day digging through the hobby room. Floor is cleared, threw out 3 bags of garbage, and did things I thought I'd never do: threw out model parts! Now before everyone envisions taped-shut `58 annuals going in the trash, forget it. I'm talking three PT Cruiser kits I butchered for body panels...gone. 3/4's of a Gullwing Mercedes....gone. Most of a badly started Indy car....gone. A glue-bomb IMC VW Beetle...gone. But the things I found....and kept. A complete set of big-n-little tires with a set of beautiful matching wire wheels. I remember paying dearly for them 15 yrs. ago and vaguely remembered the planned project using them. I found 2 more Ross Gibson engines (to go with the other 5 I have...) and a box full of Replica's & Miniatures resin goodies. Plus a chopped A-100 pick up to go with the panel van I previously unearthed. And more started projects.... At the moment my computer is on the verge of dying and I can't change my font, never mind upload pictures. Worst comes to worst I'll post using my I-phone until I get my laptop back. But we ARE making progress to start building again. It's just been a long road,

Woah... that thing is only an inch & change long?!?!?!

With the talk of scale wieght...
FASTBACK340 replied to JustBill's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
9.2 lbs. :)FWIW: A 1/25th. scale weight of a 3,300lb. car would be 132lbs. -

Failure is always an option.

I don't think a cat door in the (second story...) bedroom wall or the cannon ball wedged in the mini-van's dash is worth millions.... They'll pay damages and throw a little at the home owners. No one got hurt.... Not the first time something went wrong while filming for those guys. Just that now the popularity of the show throws it in the limelight. Hate to say it, but money makes everything OK. That is one of Discovery Channels more popular shows. Nothing is going to happen to it. Personally, I laughed my tail off when I read it this morning. I can picture the two of them saying "If 1 lb of C4 is good, 35lbs. should be better" as the cannon ball goes into orbit. -
IIRC, the real reason Corvairs were deemed "unsafe" was due to the single pivot swing arm rear suspensions. If you over cooked it going into a corner the inside tire would tuck under and roll in and effectively push the center of gravity to the point of flipping the car. This was known as "weight Jacking". A similar condition plagued early VW's until they introduced a dual pivot rear suspension in `68 that kept the wheels parallel when moving over bumps or in turns. The aftermarket came out with a "Camber Compensator" for the VW's to help mask this condition. Not sure if anything was available for the Corvair. Too bad the media killed this neat little car....

Wow.... sweet car! Your Dad ordered a nice ride!
