How do you build a satsh of parts????
Jon Cole replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, you need to do what you said you don't want to do! Buy several kits, and occasionally cannibalize them. I also scout out yard sales and flea markets. Even if the subject doesn't interest me, if I can buy it cheap, odds are there is something in there I can use. cannibalizing, also known as kitbashing, doesn't seem so wasteful if you use an entire engine or other major part(s). If I use wheels from a different kit, it's not really ruined... I can always build it with wheels from elsewhere. Even if you only have 3 kits, you can still do this. Give it a try! -

Nice build! That would be on my list of must builds. -
I made these last week. Each unit is 12 pieces; the largest diameter part(s) is 2 diff diameters glued together to get the thickness in the material I needed. And yet in spite of making sure the center rod in each one were equal in length, they... do not match. So tonite, I started over. Besides, I don't like the 'barrels' at each end. Here is a pic of what I think I need. At least at the axle end.

Looks good! Like the wide tires and plenty of rally lights.

Ford 38 pickup seen nnl east 2011
Jon Cole replied to zelkam's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
THAT... one was yours?! That truck is outstanding! I didn't go, but I have been looking at on-line photo albums. Your '38 Ford Pickup looks so right. Nice job! -
Amazing! The guy that runs that other board... the one who got his knickers in a twist over the comments, went ballistic hissy-fit and cried that he therefore wasn't going to sell them? Yeah! That was one, big ruse. He knew all along that he was going to sell them! He changed his mind the following day. Not only that, but "They will be here tomorrow". HA! He obviously knew that all along. So the point is, no matter how good or bad you think it is here... at least we are better... than over there! And as for the Falcon kit, if I happen to find one at a good price, I would buy it. Just not at $39.+

"The easiest way to source your stainless hypo tubing is simply go to the local pharmacy and buy a dozen or so of the biggest gauge syringes they carry." I tried that... they said they won't sell them without a prescrip.

If your next model should look like something Picasso would have built, blame it on the meds! Hope your knee recovers

When you hit a brick wall... turn around. I also was dealing with an attempt at scratchbuilding a 4 link, and all I got was more frustration than results. I wanted real aluminum rods. And while I know it is possible, I am just not there yet. So, I changed direction. I realized that my suspension may work if I switched to square plastic tube. That, and constantly referencing on sites like Google is what helps me. I don't know when I will finish it, it's a very involved build. Maybe my link for pics of suspensions and whatnot will help? Note that it is listed alphabetically: http://public.fotki.com/JCole/chassis_brakes_/ Hope this helps.

Mike, consistently implying that the type of model you built this time has some responsibility for the quality of the finished model is, at best, a copout. A model is a model… it doesn’t matter if it’s a Cord, a Chrysler, a Camaro, or a Corvette. It all takes skill and patience to do a good job. Constantly implying that you will stick to other cars that you are more familiar with (“i probably will stick to building what i normally buildâ€) won’t help you much if you are not willing to learn.

...and yet still more NNL East photos.
Jon Cole replied to Tommy Kortman's topic in Contests and Shows
Nice photos. WELL LIT photos! Thanks for sharing Tommy! -
Thanks for posting these!

Harry, I doubt he will handle any "constructive criticism". We have seen this before. It always turns out the same. They say they want "constructive criticism," but if said criticism is anything less than 100% glowing, all you-know-what breaks loose. BTW, I went back and looked at the Cords in question. I'm going to leave it with that.
-
That... about sums it up! Combine that, with the response by the op to Harry's comment, and it explains a lot. If it means that much to the op, then -bump- it back to the top.

Ambitious, yet feasible!

Does Plug Wire Color Really Matter?
Jon Cole replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree on disdain of 'floating' wires. They invest all kinds of detail, but forget to add gravity! -
Unless you are cutting open body panels, the only part of the powerplant that will be visible is the top. I used the upper half of a show truck block... ...and made a platform to get it at the height I needed. I used Chaparrel resin wheels from Perry's; rears on the left; fronts on the right. I moto tooled the widths down to flush with the tires. This is a vintage kit, with slot car roots that go back to the sixtees. I was aiming for a decent shelf model.

The body seam between the front fender and rocker that you circled on the diecast... is indeed present on the 1:1 car. What is not present is the style line from the side intake, along the rocker to the front wheel opening. But really... it's splitting hairs.

So in other words, you don't drive all freeway miles

69 Trans-Am Boss 302 Mustang - finally completed
Jon Cole replied to Phildaupho's topic in Model Cars
Nice Boss TA, Phil! Got any more photos? The link doesn't work. -
I also got tired of my deuce coupe looking like a clone... ...but I'm now stylin' since I replaced my artillery wheels with pie plates; and my headlights have been swapped out for candlesticks.

Post pics of your fave diecast
Jon Cole replied to philo426's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Funny how we often refer to (our) diecasts with an apologetic tone. I don't apologize for the diecasts I own... I like them... I'm a car guy, and I also build models. Diecast is just a part of scale cars. -
Glad to see this car getting the full-on detail treatment. Also glad you found my photo album! That is what they are there for!
