65 Chevy Stepside
bluestringer replied to bluestringer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Working on the engine. I'm building the custom straight out of the box, just want to get a few basic builds done before trying to add more details, although I have a pre-wired distributor I may try to install. Going with Rustoleum Spring Green for the exterior and Nutmeg for the interior. I was dry fitting the interior and can't figure exactly how the seat sits in the tub, seems to be a bit awkward. -
Got it. Thanks all.

What size wire or what can be used to replicate heater hoses? 1/24 scale.

Nice, looking forward to seeing the build. -

Finished the Old Pro drag car. Looks ok, could have been better, but could have been worse. Sorry about the blurry photo, was having problems with my camera, I will post a better one later.

Nice, that's a beautiful green.

Hmm.....108 views but no comments, maybe it looks worse than I thought. I can take the critique, tell me what I need to do to make it look better.

Engine is almost finished. Need to add the fan and distributor. I had thought about trying to wire it but decided against it. I did try to do some weathering on it, not too crazy about the way it looks, but I guess it could be worse. That intake stuff was a bugger, it would not fit together correctly, I tried to correct it but finally just got it on the best I could. Also found out I will need to remove the headers to get the engine into the frame.

Dropped by my local Hobby Lobby today to pick up a few small items with no intention of buying a kit, because I always wait until the 40% off sales. When I got to the aisle I saw the 40% off sign up. I knew it was wrong because the sale went off on the 22nd, and sure enough the sign said ends May 22nd. I ask one of the associates about it and she said get a kit and take the sign with you to check out and they should give you the discount. So I got this...........

Who makes the best pre-wired distributor? I had got one from Gofer Racing when I did the 68 Chevelle, but the wires seemed too stiff and un-manageable. I want to try again when I do the 65 Chevy stepside pickup. I had rather buy the pre-wired instead of trying to do one myself.

I like the gasser.

You can tell this is a older kit because of the hole in the pan for the metal axle. I saw some youtube vids of people fixing that, but I was not going to try it.

Revell 1968 Chevelle SS396 Day 2 Street/Strip.

Looks great. This is the first kit I tried after being away from the hobby for 20 years. I made a total mess out of it. I didn't finish it, gave up after dropping one of the door handles into the interior. I may go back and try to salvage it later, but right now I moved on to a AMT Nova Pro Stocker kit, which I hope turns out better. Looking forward to seeing your finished project. -
This is really amazing stuff. Although I could never be able to do this type of detailing work, it is inspiring and a treat to see it done and documented.

Cleaning up the body I found this. I'm going to leave it as is though since this will be a drag car that has been down the track a few times I'm working on scribing the panel lines after I read and saw on here how it can improve the looks. . I'll be using the 454 engine since it's the track car. A complete 350 is also with the kit.

It was all the small parts with the 68 Chevelle that gave me a fit. I did get a magnifying visor that has helped a lot. I don't mind cleaning up the flash and such, and I will take more time with this one. I've learned a lot of stuff here that I think will help me. I was a little too impatient with the Chevelle and I need to work on that.

The 68 Chevelle didn't turn out very good, but I got a couple more kits to try. I already had the 65 Chevy Stepside PU, and I just picked up an AMT Nova SS Pro Stocker "Old Pro" from Hobby Lobby with their 40% off sale. I think I will try the AMT next, it seems to be a less complicated kit, less parts and may be an easier build to start with. I think it's a reboot of an old kit from the 70's maybe. Looking at the parts it looks like there will be a lot of cleanup to do before I can get started though. I will post some pictures later.

I've been using Testors liquid glue in the triangle shaped bottle, and I have a bottle of Mr. CementS. I bought a tube of Gorilla super glue gel today to see if that will help. I really like the Mr. Cement, it seems to work good for a lot parts, but for others not so good. The Testors is heck trying to get it out of the bottle.

Almost finished with this kit and it looks like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH. I could not get anything to fit correctly on this thing. Could not get any glue to hold anything, as soon as I would try to glue on another part something would fall off. I even had to cut down the firewall to get the body to fit over it. I don't know if it's just me being out of practice since this is my first one in 20 years, or if it's a bad kit. I don't remember having this much trouble with kits I did in the past. Maybe my wife was right and I'm just too old to do this anymore. Not going to give up yet, I got the Revell 65 Chevy stepside pickup I'm going to try.

Great tips, thanks all. I think I have a better understanding now of how I need to do my building and painting. I'm not going into the fine detail you guys are doing, those are some great looking engines. I do want to try putting on spark plug wires, but that's as far as I will go.

Ok, I see what you are saying, a lot of stuff can be assembled then painted as long as it's going to be the same color. What if you are assembling say the engine, a chevy engine's block, heads, pan, etc. will be chevy red/orange, so you can assemble those and paint the assembly, but the exhaust manifolds will be steel. Do you go ahead and assemble them onto the heads, paint it all, then go back and hand paint over the manifolds and the other small parts that are a different color?
