Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans-am 1/8
Casey replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I remember thinking how much cooler this kit would be if it represented a '77 or '78 back when I had the kit in my possession, and had the same thought as you...but it never got any further than a thought for me. This is not a small or simple modification by any means, and requires a great deal of scratch building, even though the modifications are contained within one 'piece', the nosecone. It looks like you're on the right track now, so keep plugging away at it, refining the shape until it looks right. I think many people overlook the fact that scratch building in larger scales is often more challenging compared to 1/25 scale, since you need to both add more detail and get those details exactly correct, or the eye will notice any deviations. I wonder if there's some type of honeycomb mesh available which you could use for the grilles? -
Well, second best: Seriously, I think the Lindberg '66 Chevelle SS is widely regarded as their best kit of the modern Lindberg era, so don't hesitate to buy and/or build one.

Lindberg Dodge A-100 Pick-up Coca Cola Truck
Casey replied to Duntov's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
The LRW kit had been in production for what, a decade or so? If you really want the LRW version, you can probably get one cheaper on ebay or at a swap meet than you can buy a new kit for. If Coca-cola's name is on the kit, you can bet there will be nothing else included to distract from the Coke images/names/logos, etc. If Lindberg really wanted to hit a home run, they'd reverse engineer the Touch Tone Terror parts which have never been re-issued. -
Painting them with Alclad or having them plated by Chrome Tech USA or a similar company.

90's model nissan truck?
Casey replied to neverstopdreamin's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I swear American SATCO had some type of early '90s Nissan in kit form, but it may have been a re-packaged Pathfinder from Aoshima, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NISSAN-PATHFINDER-TERRANO-SE-V6-1-24-AOSHIMA-JAPAN-/370465282647?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5641739a57 -
There is more than one way to chop a top, so unless you want the exact look the Jimmy Flintstone body gives you, I suggest you chop the top yourself. There are many factors to consider when chopping a top, many of which only become apparent after the top is chopped. Unless it's a Model T body, just about any vehicle is going to require extensive modification to the roof and body after a top chop, and making all the body modifications look like a well-planned, thoroughly though out idea is what separates the good from the bad...and the ugly.

90's model nissan truck?

There were two 1/20 scale Nissan Hardbody pickups made by Lindberg, but that's all I remember in kit form. -

Since we're on the topic of Chevy/GMC Fleetside beds, what's the deal with the ex-MPC (now AMT) Fleetside bed included in the Hardcastle & McCormick, Fall Guy, and recent '84 GMC 4x4 kits? What the heck is that engraved right angle line running around the fuel filler door? -

1/16 Scale Army Vega Funny Car - Finished 10/14/2018
Casey replied to Mooneyzs's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I think that's the best option. I was about 14 or so when this kit came out/when I built it, so my skills weren't the best, but I did mask and paint the blue area on the body, and stuck with the kit decals for the red areas. The flares never really looked good to my eyes. And there are plenty of 1/16 devotees when it comes to drag racing subjects, so you'll always have company. -
What's your favorite model kit box art? I'll go with this Revell '55 Chevy kit box, courtesy of the Box Art Den:

BTDT, and I feel your pain. It really is not fun to remove all of the model lines from the chassis tubes, but you just have to dive in and get it done on these kits. I'm sure the Flex-i-files helped a lot! The one thing I recall not liking was the gap at the back edge of the front 'bumper' ends, as it just didn't look right to me, and those comma-shaped red decal pieces included to cover part of the rear wheel arch flares...those never look good nor fit correctly. -
No big block Chevy?

All great scrores, except the AMT '69 Daytona. I would've left that one behind.

"Built for the 1968 Daytona 500 the car was actually a 1967 body with a 1966 nose that Smokey felt was aerodynamically superior to the ‘67 front end sheet metal." From what I remember reading about this car, it was closer to a 7/8 scale version of the real car, which, if true, would really make accurate bodywork a LOT of work.

Michaels Clearence
Casey replied to RickRollerLT1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My local Michael's stores only stock the McEwen F/C in that series, but my local K-Mart stores stock both the Hawaiian and CTH kits for $15.99. -
Fred Cady Design used to make a few different Indy Pace Car decal sets, but that business has been closed for a few years now. However, you can still find Fred Cady decals on eBay for reasonable prices. For the 1/24 scale '64-1/2 Mustang kit, try posting an ad in the Wanted section here first, as it's a fairly common kit without a high value, so maybe someone will trade just the decals.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek with my replies regarding the '71 Mustang and Cougar, as most of the Japanese kits of American cars have been poor efforts at best. I do think the '67 Cougar kit would be a good idea for an all-new kit, but I don't see anything topping a 1/25 scale '70 Plymouth Barracuda/'Cuda in the "most needed" category. Yes, it's matter of opinion how necessary it is, but I don't think anyone would argue a '70 Plymouth E-body would sell like hotcakes and be a perennial good seller for Revell.

I guess my main issue is the use of the word "cheap". The saying "you get what you pay for" usually holds true, so if you want quality, you have to sacrifice something to get it, and in this case, that something is money, and in return you get scale realism. How real you want you models to be is determined by either your skills or your wallet, or some combination of both.

If you're looking for "close enough", you can make tubing, grommets, beads, and styrene rod work, but it's a PITA to put the proper bevels and rounded edges on each fitting, cut them perfectly perpendicular to the rod's long axis, and then drill the hole perfectly centered. Pre-made fittings are not cheap, but they are well worth it IMO, both in terms of time savings and how the finished product looks. I don't think the price has increased all that much since I used them on this project in '95-'96, but I know I never could've gotten homemade fittings and line to look as much like the real parts as the Detail Master parts do.
