What did you see on the road today?
OldNYJim replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Spotted this today - not super noteworthy except for the interesting graffiti that seems to happen to a lot of these commercial vehicles eventually in New York...normally they’re a real mess but this one was nicely done at least. I keep thinking that something like this would be an interesting scale project! I was on my way back from helping a friend clean out the basement of her bar - found some interesting stuff left by a previous tennant! Excuse the off topic stuff - but I love finding cool stuff like this! -
Stopped by a Blicks this morning on my way to somewhere else for some K&S metal rod and sheet and they had all the packs of tube for 99 cents, and 50% off their rolls of thin metal sheet. Their display was pretty much picked clean (at least of anything I’d find useful) but I grabbed what they had, and some wire for scratchbuilding bits and pieces:

Offbeat Places You Have Purchased Model Kits?
OldNYJim replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
7-Eleven sold kits?!? Wish they still did - wonder if there’s some in the dusty old corners of some 7-Eleven stockrooms somewhere ? -
Thank you buddy! I’m excited to start to get to paint some bits now! I love that! Yes! It’s really cool when something looks BETTER, but you’re not sure why! Some of the mods aren’t too subtle on this thing, granted, but there’s a bunch of little things that I’m pleased with too. Whilst I’m replying anyway...shot a little paint today! Needs more coats still, but I love how this color looked glinting in the sun on my apartment’s built-in paint drying device ? I can’t wait to see it with some clear over it! I’m thinking of using some Pearl-Ex to give it a little extra something too - but those sparkles are really eye catching even just after a few mist coats! IMG_6155.MP4

I’ve been resisting getting one of these for AGES, and I keep thinking “I don’t really NEED one”...but then I see a thread like this and think of all the cool stuff I could do with it if I had one ??
-
I think you’re right buddy! It’s definitely going to be a good candidate for some ridiculous graphics. I actually did some more work on the body today so I could maybe start work on some airbrushing but it needs some primer so I can see how far out I am. Little progress today, got the engine in! Made a couple of simple mounts and got the kit 409 in there - should be just about dangerous enough to drive I’d think ???
-
Thanks fellas! Getting closer! I think I’m pretty much ready to lay come color on there, after a final round of clean up tomorrow when the paint’s all set up and shrunk down nice: Just realised I’ve done something on this EVERY day this year to get it this far...I hate to think how many hours this thing has in it considering it doesn’t look that much different to stock ??. From front to back though it’s had a new front tray, reshaped headlamp openings, a smoothed out hood, side chrome deleted, door handles removed, trunk hinges removed, rear deck reshaped, trunk lid reshaped, gas filler removed, Frenched rear license plate added, new rear pan and the windshield posts moved inwards and the windshield narrowed. That was a lot of stuff ??. More soon, hopefully with some paint, finally!

Haha, that sign! ? Another poor week for cool cars in downtown Brooklyn this week...only a couple of interesting-ish things of note. Wonder if there’s a pickup around here somewhere with a black cab and white mismatched bed? ? -
Offbeat Places You Have Purchased Model Kits?

Went in one of the Chinese dollar stores near me this morning looking for anything useful for model stuff (craft supplies, pins, glues, whatever) and spotted a whole bunch of Tamiya rattlecans in amongst the $2 tools that break right away and off-brand cosmetics! I didn’t pick any up, I wanted to see if $6 was a good price for these...seems like it’s a little under normal retail though so I’m going to head back and pick some up in the week probably. Amazing what you can find where you didn’t expect to find it! -
That’s really helpful, thank you SO MUCH Eric...really cool of you to share your secrets!

A little more scratch building today - seeing as that front end is REALLY visible I wanted to get the steering setup to look detailed enough that it could (probably kinda) work and be interesting visually. Started with the arms and the main linkage: And then made a steering box, using a 1:1 aftermarket Impala one for somewhat-reference and a couple more little links to make it all look about-right: A little more detailing with some scale bolt heads and whatnot and then I can figure out where the shocks will mount and then clean it all up for paint. More soon!
-
This is looking incredible! Remind me Eric - are you using the deep-cut blade on your Silhouette or the regular one? I’m not getting results as good as yours when I cut...I’m normally letting the machine do 5 or 6 passes but it doesn’t do a great job of cutting through the material. Might just be new blade time...

Those headlamps definitely look a little surprised ?
-
Those colors are cool too! What paints did you use?
-
Thanks buddy! Still moving on this one, slowly - stuck in an endless cycle of Bondoing, sanding and repriming trying to get it PERFECT...I’d LOVE to get some color on this this soon though...
-
Love the color! That’s gorgeous!
-
And a little more progress today - made a front axle, linkages and mounts: As with the rear end, I left everything so it could pivot and move for now ready to make front shocks so I can set the ride height how I want...it’s going to look pretty wild! Not totally done on the front yet, but exciting to get it to the mock-up stage at least! I was excited to see this ridiculous thing on it’s wheels ? More soon!
-
A small update, as I’m posting anyway...made some axle mounts and rear ladder bars for this thing so I can start to get it on it’s wheels. I used a Ford 9” axle (I know, Ford on a Chevy ??) and scratchbuilt the rest with styrene sheet, bar and tube: I added a couple of mounting tabs to the frame to connect it at the front and left it so it will pivot and move like the real parts would so I can mess with the ride height and make some shocks to get it sitting how I want: More soon!
-
Ohhhh yeah, that’s the look I’m going for! Love it, thanks buddy! I was stuck on an idea on how best to do the front suspension, and this gives me a good idea! Thank you! ?
-
Thanks buddy! I didn’t forget about this build...but I DID spend a few days thinking “how am I going to do ANYTHING like I’m trying to do with that kit chassis?!”. You ever start a project with the intentions of it being relatively simple and before you know it you’re scratchbuilding or modifying EVERYTHING? Yeah, I think this will be one of those... Started a frame anyway - I figured I can keep the rails straight when they’re past the firewall seeing as this this will have a crazy-jacked-up rear end, but what I gain in simplicity there I’ll lose in scratchbuilding all the rest of everything but the body and engine ?? More soon!
-
Perfect, thank you! ?
-
Oh, and you might notice that the interior as a whole looks longer than it did - I removed about a scale 12 inches of parcel shelf so that the rear passengers could actually have legs and still be comfortable ?
-
That’s basically what I was thinking too, yes! Smooth it out and run a console right up the middle! Actually made a start on that since my last post...sliced the stuff out that I don’t need: And then started rebuilding it with sheet: Excuse how rough it looks here - I’ve just hacked the pieces out and taped them in place as I went. The floor needed a hump (to match one in the chassis) so I couldn’t use flat sheet for that...made it out of three pieces of sheet to get the curve I needed, and then I had the idea of having a little bit of the shape of the wheel arch showing through there so I sliced up some plastic spoons to make that little bubble that you can see in the top corner there...nothing super interesting but I’m pleased to have this roughly resembling an interior tub again! After I sliced it up I was like “oh no, what have I done” ? I’m just about to glue all the little pieces in place and let it set up overnight so I can smooth it out tomorrow ??

Let's See Some Glue Bombs!
OldNYJim replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice scores! I’d be pleased to own any of those, especially the showrods. I have a conversion kit to make the Li’l Cashbox out of one of the more easy to find Li’l kits...I really need to get that thing built one of these days
