This bothers me...it's in the hobby shops but I have a subscription and it's not here yet. -

Metalizer Spray Paint
Terry Sumner replied to streetisneat's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
No...do not use primers under metalizers. They work best on highly polished bare plastic. In fact, the smoother the better! -
Wow Drew...only 28 entries in that class from a nation wide contest. I really thought there would have been hundreds of entries in each of the classes! In fact, that was one of the reasons I didn't enter anything....because I thought there would be so many entries and all the best modelers around the country would enter! I'm very surprised....

Well Mike, I don't know where you're from because of your amusing location listed so I guess I can't comment on whether or not I've ever been to any of the same contests as you. However, I too have been to many contests and I have seen this many many times. And in fact I have done it myself at times. For me mostly it was simply because I knew I couldn't stay all day, usually because of my wife's illness. But I know of a few guys who just like to display their models and NEVER enter in competition but like to come and enjoy the company and discussions. I have one friend...Dave...who is like that. He's an aircraft builder and he is VERY good. His models would win all the time. Eventually he just decided to dispense with the competitive aspect and just display his models.

For those fellas who claim to not care about winning in a contest, I have a suggestion: Just put your model on the table with a note under it or next to it that says, "Not in competition." That way, you can enjoy the camaraderie of being with fellow modelers and you can discuss things to your heart's content without any concern at all for the competition aspect of the show/contest.

How about those Revell kits a few years ago that had the cardboard diorama scenes in them? I picked up the Deuce roadster one with the McDonalds scene in it mainly because I had read somewhere that they had been recalled because of some licensing problem? Was that true? -
Allison Questions
Terry Sumner replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In WWII, the first model P-51 Mustangs, the A, B and C models, used the Allison engine. But they didn't have the power needed to perform in high altitudes. The Brits had the Merlin engine which was of the same configuration but a lot more powerful. When the US re-engined the P-51D models with that amazing Merlin, the Mustang truly came into it's own as about the best performing single engine fighter in the world! -

Well done! Nice crisp paint demarcation lines....no orange peel...etc etc etc. Looks like all the items on our bad things list were taken care of in this build! Congrats!

I almost forgot a few that are my pet peeves... 1. Wrinkle walled slicks that depict the model on launch with those big wrinkles in them. Those wrinkles ONLY appear when the car is being launched from the starting line. Some wrinkle walls when aired down quite a bit will show wrinkles "in both directions" when at rest but it's a lot more rare than showing no wrinkles at all at rest. 2. If the builder chooses to have those wrinkle walls on the model, having the wrinkles pointed in the wrong direction. Under launch, the wrinkles will extend from the rim towards the FRONT of the car, not to the rear. 3. Calling any car with a raised front end a gasser. The gas classes were meant to include cars that could be registered and driven on the street. The rules called for a full cooling system, full interiors, unmodified bodies and a host of other things. Not to mention that the max engine height was only 24" above the ground as measured at the crank centerline. So these so-called Gassers, with a sky high front end and an engine crank that was way above the top of the tires would never have been allowed to run as a Gasser. Now of course this does not include the "Match racers" which didn't run in the regular classes. Those Gassers stretched the rules a lot to be sure. But please, if you want to run it as a gasser, please please put a radiator in it! 4. In the same vein, incorrect decals on the car. Decals that say AA/GS when the car is injected. Or C/G when the car is supercharged...etc.

Meaning nothing as to the quality of your model ...it's very nice...but I kinda laughed a bit all by myself here. Why? .... because the first thing I thought of when seeing the pics with the body off was of Sheriff Buford T. Justice's police car after it lost it's roof in Smokey and the Bandit!
