Unleaded15... is this stuff any good?
randyc replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That Ethanol gas will degrade much quicker than straight gas. If you are leaving a vehicle parked a lot, you may want to look for some non-ethanol gas - doesn't go bad as quick. Look it up online. Plenty of articles on it. I worked for hte state motorcycle program and we constantly had fuel issues with ethanol gas. It does all sorts of nasty stuff in the fuel system. -
1984 Custom Cadillac (California Wheels Edition) By Revell
randyc replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I did get my new reissue (Dec 2016) and it matches up with the Dr Cranky review, just in case anyone else is wondering. Other than the decals. Nothing new to report. Lots of trees packed in to that box. Randy -
Looks great! I did one very similar this year. Green with tan interior. Same wheels. The pad printed tires in the box. I used the 67 GT chassis I had left from a junker. Randy

67 (Gasser Style Street Freaky Nongasser Show Car) 'Vette
randyc replied to James2's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Keep going! It's a MODEL car. And it is inspired by a real car. I love the exaggerated stance. Can't wait to see it completed. -
Cool. I loved these cars. I finished the Vette, but never finished the Cobra. I know where most of it is. therein lies the problem. Those were so nice - shame they never pursued the series. Randy

Nice. I do love the Grand Sports. From the most interesting period in racing, to me. All the experimentation. The racers and engineers knew they needed different things, but weren't sure how to get there. No computer analysis. Grand Sport and Cobra are perfect examples. The GS had too much front lift, so they cut hte top off. The Cobra - they made a coupe. So cool. Great build. Randy

1984 Custom Cadillac (California Wheels Edition) By Revell
randyc replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Not a thing wrong with Dr Cranky's. But sometimes, kits change over the years. So if the new one is any different, it would be nice to see a current review. That's all. No offense to Dr Cranky. -

Still waiting to get mine. I'm thinking of trying some Caddy sombreros with some form of whitewall - maybe wide white Satcos or thin white stripes. We'll see. Just some sort of interesting Caddy. Not a lowrider. As stock as I can get without major surgery. WOuld like to see a current "in the box" post on it. -
$30+ kits - hows it affect you?
randyc replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have been building pretty much since 1974, with a break for the late teen years in mid 80s. I have built MOST of the things that are being reissued and don't have a lot of interest in repeating that. If I do, I can always rebuild one I have. My income is not what it was in 2000, unfortunately. Back in the 90s I would spend at least $100/month on kits and get a whole big stash. Now that might buy me 3 kits and paint? Plus other responsibilties. So I am not buying much anymore. I think I have bought 5 kits this whole year and finished 3 of them so far. Only releases on horizon for me are the second version of the Bronco maybe and the reissue of the lowrider Caddy (closer to stock build for me). 66 Suburban? No interest. Too much like the 64-5 Chev pickup and I did that one when it was current. So all the kit makers moved production to Asia and kit prices keep climbing and the licensing issues that preclude tire branding and such. Just getting to where I don't want to participate anymore. I still get a lot of pleasure form building a kit, but I also have quite a few unbuilts bought over hte years, when they were cheap. I'm just now getting the the original issue of the Revell 67 Charger and it's in its 3rd or 4th iteration. So yeah the prices are affecting me. I won't have ONE of every version of the 29 Ford like I do of the 32 Ford from a few years back. I have the 29 and not sure what I'll do with it yet. I wanted it mainly for the Z'd frame to put under my 29 (?) Sedan I started many years ago. Not going to be a direct drop in. Hope there are others out there to carry on the tradition in my stead. RandyC -
Nice. I built this one some years ago and it was a fun build and definitely different from all the NASCAR models I built. I enjoyed building these other race cars to go with my collection. Looks good.

Nice! And inspiring too. This is my curent project. Which is stalled because of a paint issue. And Christmas decorrating projects with the wife. UGh. I'll get back on track soon. Glad someone is still building things I am... lol

http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/118147-70-cuda-not-under-glass-on-the-entertainment-center/ On the charger I used Testors lacquer and some acrylic Modge Podge. Thought it would work, but didn't. I've used Krylons forever. And auto touch up paints, but I wanted to try the Testor Lacquer on this one. Live and learn. The places that aren't pitted look pretty durn good. And it didn't pit all over. I guess "fisheye" would be a better term. Just a basic incompatibility issue. If I would have had my airbrush working, would have probably used a different clear or went on slower. IDK. -

LOL. Good luck. My 67 Charger is going to have to be stripped - paint incompatibility with clear and base. Looks like a shiny pitted rustbucket. Argghh. First time in a long time I've had that bad a reaction. Stay on the Dart. I found my Landy Dart over the weekend. Can put it on display now. So that's a win for me. -
Not always, but some are. And I like playing with paint detailing on them. Can make a huge difference in how they look on the shelf. I did a bunch of these when I was waiting to get my workbench set back up aftre a divorce and move. Easy to do without a lot of space or materials. Good for testing paints and tricks on as well. I learned about striping tires with this one.

Have you read the book about the design process of hte Tucker? There were several variations and I think this is similar to one of the possibilities. If I can post a link, this is the bok. If I can't, please delete the link or let me know and I'll try. Good read if you're into the Tucker. http://www.thriftbooks.com/w/design-and-destiny-the-making-of-the-tucker-automobile_philip-s-egan/546102/?gclid=CjwKEAiA6rrBBRDsrLGM4uTPkWASJADnWZQ4bdRoH-OHS8kIww1gSKg0pEaXcnMbaW4HiEBbOBfLohoCFPbw_wcB#isbn=0924321008&pcrid=70112903232&pkw=&pmt=&plc=

Looking good. Still following. lol. I finished the Cuda - in the "under glass". Onto the 67 charger now. I'm not detailing like you do though. No fun in that for me anymore, but love seeing what you are doing on yours. -
Thanks. I like the challenge of detailing a Matchbox car. It's a fun break and can be a quick little deal that gives good results.
-
I would think the Chimneyvilles would work. Ican't imagine the state getting a different size just for the mustang. Of course they did get that batch of reverse painted Caprices a few years back.... I will try to see if I have a set this week if I can remember to look - I used to have a couple sets.. Don't ever get old - you cant' remember to do things that aren't essential to survival. lol

This might should be in diecast, but it is a finished model. 57 GMC Matchbox with basic paint detailing. I thought it came out pretty well. Painted the wheels and whitewalls. That made the biggest difference. The whitewalls were applied by holding the brush lightly to the tire and spinning the tire. Going to try this on a 1/2* next with wheel in a drill. There is a before picture to show the difference from start to finish. Might should have painted the grille and bumper white to look more like a work truck. The grille and bumper are MM chrome silver paint. I love a good matchbox/Hotwheel casting. They can be improved greatly with a little paint. I could take this one a little further still.

70 cuda - not under glass - on the entertainment center
randyc replied to randyc's topic in Model Cars
With my bestest small brush and a lot of weird breathing to keep myself as relaxed as possible. The brush was loaded with what looked like a lot of paint. It took 2 coats to get it red enough. And I have to take my glasses off and hold it about 6" from my nose. I did have the grille in the body - just pushed in. Made it easier to hold. A lot of luck as well. thanks for the compliments. -

Thanks all. Foiling usually goes pretty well, but I dinged this one up in the parking lot at the cruise-in. lol -
It's done. It looks like a day 2 car sorta. Or maybe year 2 - my foil didn't come out quite as smooth as planned. Not as slilck as most of you guys try for. But I'm happy with it. Will try to get outside pics soon. It was a mostly fun build. I tried to make the trim look better than it did - window frames, drip rails, chrome trim. Take a look. Needs some white letters on tires for sure. I took these this morning right as I got ready to leave for work. So they are darkish, but the TV reflection is interesting. Not sure where it goes next - case or what?

You guys have way better stuff than me. 2001 Olds Aurora V6 with 209K miles. And I love it. Hope it lasts forever. Nice car, big car for the times. Was a pretty fancy car in it's day - $40K in 2001. Showed what American manufacturers could do when they wanted. Of course, buyers didn't wan thtat from an american car. If they wanted that kind of car, they bought Lexus or BMW. I got it for $4300 4 years ago with 124K and it has been a great car - gets 27mpg on highway trips. I was working 3.5 hours from home and needed a car to drive home. All I had was a motorcycle and it was too cold to me to ride all winter.. Fair weather rider.
