Buying more than is financially healthy
JamesW replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I gotta say, lately I've become more of a collector than a builder (no real time for building with the hours I work). But I STILL only have around 20 unbuilt kits in my collection. I'll buy a kit on Ebay if the price is right, or at the LHS if it catches my eye (and I know I can afford it). I do however make sure the bills are paid first. It helps that I have a job where I come home with extra money every night. I'm also saving to buy some extras for my 1:1. -
Iknow you said to leave out anything Johan, but the top of my list would be the Heavenly Hearse and 79 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. MPC 70's Dodge pickups. AMT Chevy Dooley (stock and street machine), AMT Chevy C1500 ext. cab longbed. AMT 454SS pickup AMT C1500 stepside Sorry, I'm a truck guy. lol If they could reissue the snapfast trucks with full detail parts that would be AWESOME.

THAT'S what I'm looking for Roger, thanks. The base color for this truck is going to be (or plan to be) Testors Graphite Dust Laquer. Time to bust out the spoons and test some ghost colors.

Aftermarket- ScaleDreams and HobbySearch Kits- Mostly Ebay (but do have others saved in favorites if they ever get the kits I'm interested in) Supplies (styrene)- Hobbylinc -
Thanks for the input Billy, (and Steve through email). I forgot to mention I use strictly rattle can (Duplicolor and Testors laquer).

Paint Strippers - What to Use?
JamesW replied to pbj59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I swear by Purple Power. It took the Colorplace paint off within an hour, but takes a couple days to remove Duplicolor or Testors laquer. -
I have a project coming up and I would like to try doing ghost flames. Thought I would ask the paint Gurus here what the best technique is.

After I realized that some of the kits I have wouldn't fit in the AMT cases I decided to pick up a couple of these. Now these are all I'll buy, I don't want a bunch of mismatched cases on my shelf, plus these are cheaper than the AMT cases at my LHS (even cheaper on Ebay).

I need to get out there one of these days. I went to the one in Lansing a couple months ago but they've been closed for a while, they need to update the yellow pages. But I did get all 8 of these for $44 shipped.

Let's see your Chevy S10!
JamesW replied to Jordan White's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
They built the first dually in 97 (the blue crew cab). I first seen pics of it in a Sport Truck issue in 97. It WAS going to be a regular production truck for the Brazilian market but never made it that far. It sat at the Warren, MI plant for 2 years (while they built a few more prototypes). They were all finally auctioned off in late 2008. Whoever has those trucks definatly has a beast. I prayed for them to go into regular production, but there wasn't much of a demand for them. I have always wanted to build the crew cab dually, which is why I've been searching for pics (for close to 10 yrs). I had that magazine issue put up so I could use it for reference when the time came, but over the years it vanished. -

Primers to use with Duplicolor paint?
JamesW replied to brodie_83's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hmm, I've never had a problem with Duplicolor primer, that's all I use anymore. I just recently started working with laquer and have only used Duplicolor (only thing I can get around here) so I wouldn't know what other kinds would work. -
1995 Chevy Truck Lowrider
JamesW replied to SSNova70's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Pretty sure 3/16 would be an appropriate size. -
Looks good. For being 1/12 you'd think they woulda made the doors and trunk open.

You could just post the link to your photobucket album. -
Sometimes ya just can't win.
JamesW replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No kiddin. Got to work, went to take off on a delivery, wouldn't ya know it, car won't start. It's either the battery or alternator. Plus side is, no $ out of pocket, I got a bumper to bumper warranty til Dec. 29th, then a FULL drivetrain warranty for 3 years. I feel your pain though, my truck was a money pit, kinda the reason I traded it in for the GA. -
A different kind of clear
JamesW replied to 1320wayne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Pretty sure that's the same stuff as FolkArt clear.
