Google is the consummate frenemy. They generate the revenue to keep the server running. They can't always defeat the bad actors that game the system. This has actually gotten better, thanks to AI. It's a bit like a puppy that wants to please you, but sometimes tinkles on the floor. I'm going to suggest something unconventional. Start clicking on the ads that are acceptable, or even better, interesting. That will train the algorithm to your preferences, and should eventually solve the problem. You can also report inappropriate ads. There's usually a little white rectangle in an upper corner that will bring down a menu with several options. Both of these will alleviate the problem.

Be thankful it wasn't Klingon opera. 😁

Buying kits and building them are two different hobbies. Most of us are much better at the former. -
Grand Canyon - North Rim Lodge "controlled burn" down
Dave Ambrose replied to 89AKurt's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
This bums us out big-time. Our plans were to attend the Grand Canyon Star party with my daughter and grandson on the north rim next year. Probably not happening now, but we'll just have to see. We might fall back to the south rim.- 10 replies

Google is the archetypical frenemy. On the one hand, the income keeps this site going, on the other, it's way too easy to game the ads. Best bet is to report the inappropriate ads to Google via the little box in the ad.

Show Us Your Work Bench
Dave Ambrose replied to Bruce Poage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here’s my workbench. It’s pathologically clean at the moment as I’m working on a Hasegawa Wright Flyer. -
People thinking they can pass on busy 2-lane highways -- when they can't. There's a long stretch of 2 lane highway that goes through the Mojave desert. Terrain varies between pretty flat, gently rolling, and over low mountains. This one pickup truck hangs themselves out on a long like of traffic, not realizing the oncoming traffic is moving at a good clip. We are in the lead. Barely gets back into line and we head to the shoulder. My wife was driving and she handled it well. We both could have done without the adrenaline rush though.

I got very judicious with my kit buying. There's this whole Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) theme going, both at the swap meets, and between our own ears. That certainly drove some of my early buying. But let's face it, almost any kit we want to build is going to be available for as long as we might need it. There are a large number of modelers with massive stashes that aren't going to be around forever. Those kids will make their way into the secondary market and we'll be well stocked for the foreseeable future.

Oh dear. As we used to say, "You are so busted!" I had a somewhat similar experience. My daughter and I had been accumulating models for a bit, and storing them in an out of the way (and sight) space in the garage. My wife goes up there to get something out and discovers both of our stashes. An astonished, "Where did all these come from?" may have been uttered. Naturally, in her eyes, they all belong to me. Explanations are initially dismissed as not credible but proven true when my daughter takes her models to her new place. We did work out an equitable deal. For every two models I build, I can buy one. This seems to work for both of us, and keeps things from getting out of hand. I have two further suggestions. Figure out how long it will take you to build all the models in your stash. That will place its size in perspective. The other is to make an inventory. I used Google Sheets so I could reference it from just about anywhere. This keeps the duplicate buys to a minimum.

I'm pretty sure the photos we host are loading properly. The text should be loading promptly. If it isn't, let us know. We've enabled "lazy loading" which means the photos don't actually load until you scroll to that part of the thread. This saves us a lot of resources. However, we can't vouch for photos loaded on an external host. So, if you're using something like Photobucket or Fotki, there may be performance problems that we cannot address.

The heater core in my 2014 Frontier is leaking. $3500 to replace it outright. That's almost more than the truck is worth. Going to have them bypass the heater core and just live with it. This is the first major failure in 176K miles. We really like this truck too. Color me grumpy.

Monogram early Indy car
Dave Ambrose replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
This is a fun kit. Indycals has decals for it. They also have the correct wheels and tires. I did the pink Zink car which was the 1955 winner. I'm looking forward to see what you do with the windscreen. I never did get mine to fit properly. -
