  1. My sister-in-law sent us a game box with venison, boar, and a couple of pheasants. We cooked the venison this evening. Forgot to take a picture, but it was deerlicious.
  2. Have them contact Gregg@modelcarsmag.com. We need more Canadian dealers.
  3. Arecibo is both an amazing, and problematic facility. It was designed for an era when our equipment to receive and process the signals was 1000 times less effective than it is now. So, you had to compensate with a lot of collecting area. It certainly has a vast collector. Unfortunately, it isn't steerable, so the effective collecting area falls off significantly when you're not looking directly overhead. The object you want to look at will rarely, if ever, be overhead. Given the sensitivity and low noise of modern head-end electronics, there isn't the great need for so much collecting area. If you need more sensitivity, you can get that, plus better spatial resolution, by combining signals from multiple antennas. We didn't have that kind of signal processing capability when Arecibo was built. Now we've implemented processing capabilities that weren't even theoretically possible when the dish was built. Dr. Bouman's work imaging a black hole would be a good example. Its unique capability was for radar astronomy. That will be hard to replace. Theoretically, you can use a multiple antenna setup as you would for receiving, but you'd need to do something unprecedented with the transmitters. The military-industrial complex tried to do something similar for the "Star Wars" initiative, and failed pretty miserably. So, that capability is gone. The telescope needed its supporting cables refitted. Those cables are under horrendous tension. That's why there are six of them. Two cables had already failed, and the rest were in overload conditions. The ends of the cables were cast into place in the towers with molten zinc. They weren't designed for replacement. We wouldn't do it that way now, but that was the best they could do in 1963. I haven't heard about the condition of the columns, but I can't imagine that they were in great condition either. I can't imagine how you might retrofit them safely without removing a large piece of the reflecting surface. Arecibo got to where it is over time, and mostly behind the scenes. I don't like how it turned out, but given the condition it was in, decommissioning was probably the wisest choice.
  4. I haven't seen one on a race track, but these cars are supposed to be hotter than a $2 pistol. Back when I was in high school, my friend drove an Austin America. That was super fun little car, and I've always liked classic(?) minis. Never owned one though. I prefer that A-Series engine in an MG Midget.
  5. It depends on your viewing platform. Desktop and tablet (I think) will paginate. Mobile phones or anything that looks like one will not. I have seen some very old computers with low resolution displays act like mobile phones.
  6. I like this kit. I know some other people don't like it, but I think it's healthy to have some nice curbside kits of US cars in our hobby shops. They let novice builders further explore the joys and exasperation of paint drama, while relieving them of the perceived complexity of assembling and painting a full chassis. I know you can just build the kit without the engine, but this isn't the way a newcomer thinks. With the separate hood, we can put an engine in there if we want. I might well get one of these kits. Rusting it out, and putting a couple of surfboards in it should make for an interesting build.
  7. These are fantastic, in the best sense of the word. Love the creativity and execution.
  8. If you’re stopping by, please review the revised rules.
  9. If you're referring to the white part on the roof, it's metal. It's like a second roof, but spaced off the cab roof by 5/8" or so. It's intended to keep the cab cooler in hot climates.
  10. I don't get time off for it, if that's what you're asking. It would be nice, but not in the cards.
  11. It's not there yet, but on my list of things to do. Sadly, my employer things I should be doing other things with my time.
  12. Report the post, and include that the trade is complete. We'll take it out of circulation.
  13. Distribution will be an ongoing challenge for us. It's a very niche, perhaps even hyperniche publication, and the distributors want to sell gazillions of whatever they're carrying. Getting them to carry something of limited interest is always an uphill battle. It leads me to wonder if that wasn't part of the reason SA folded shop. But, we will inquire. If you want the magazine on a regular basis and you're in Europe, I recommend subscribing.
  14. I have too. They were my go to hobby shop when I was in Toronto. Great shop, and I loved that they had a pot of coffee on along with a box of cookies every Saturday. That’s something I think more of them should do.
  15. I forgot to put them on. I’ll remedy that in a bit, but the Canadian info is above.
  16. I inadvertently left off the Canadian and Australian sellers. Sorry, no places in the UK yet. But if you have a hobby shop who might like to carry it, ask them to contact us. BERG'S HOBBIES PO BOX 527 PARRAMATTA NSW 2124 AUSTRALIA DAILEY HOBBIES 9 Carlow Court WHITBY ON L1N-8T7 CANADA HOBBY CENTRE 6-33 ROYDON PL OTTAWA ON K2E 1A3 CANADA HOBBY HOUSE LTD 80 MONTREAL RD VANIER ON K1L 6E7 CANADA WHEELS & WINGS HOBBIES 1880 DANFORTH AVE TORONTO ON M4C 1J4 CANADA Dan, unfortunately, all the Canadian dealers are in Ontario. The people at Wings and Wheels are first class and might well send you a copy.
  17. I think you hit the nail on the head. Now days, if you want to up in management, you have to have a financial mindset. It involves knowing the cost of everything, but not the value. It's almost always easier to cut cost rather than add value. I find this odd because the companies that do focus on value, have skyrocketed on the stock market and stayed there. Apple for instance has appreciated 3000% over the last 12 years. Tesla is another good example.
  18. We have to be very careful about adding new topics. Too many, and navigating the board becomes a daily problem. We feel like we're very near this point now. I'm a member on an astronomy forum that has so many subforums, that it's nearly impossible to find the interesting content by browsing. I don't want that to happen here. Model cars aren't nearly as complicated as astronomy. I'd like to keep it that way. This means that a lot of good ideas, like this one, just can't be implemented. Tags will help a lot, but descriptive topic titles are also needed.
  19. Unfortunately, the USPS isn't operating as well as it used to. The shops usually get theirs before the subscribers because they go via UPS. We do know that at least a few hobby shops have already gotten them. I haven't seen my subscription copy yet, but it will get here.
  20. Our current dealer list is now on the web site. It can be found at http://www.modelcarsmag.com/where-to-buy/
  21. I've had one or two models in my cubicle. They're nice conversation starters, especially when you bring something new in.
  22. I'm fairly certain that buying kits and building them are two different hobbies. I was initially driven by fear of missing out (FOMO). But realized that these kits are generally going to be available for as long as I might need one. I've backed way off on buying kits though I love to look around at model swap meets. At this point, my kit stash is right about where I want it, tho larger than my wife anticipated. Both my son and daughter build Gundams, so there are a lot of kits around here.
  23. I will be posting a list of dealers on the web site. I'll post an announcement when I do that.
  24. Yes, it will be. All current subscribers will get issues.
  25. That is not normal. The site will happily use browser cookies to keep track of you and you don’t normally have to relogin. what browser are you using? Are you using it in private mode? And if not, do you have cookies enabled?
