  1. I had one of those BOOM! days today. Went to the LHS and picked up polishing supplies. When I got home my eBay stuff had arrived. How cool is this? Sealed Sammy Swindell, Casey Luna and Kinser sprint cars from the mid 80's 10.99 ea. Carpenter 55 Pro Mod sealed, 11.99 and Rickie Smith's pro stock Thunderbird open but complete 9.99. All from the same seller so I weasled on shipping, something like 12.00 bucks I think. Bob F
  2. Stunning rebuild!! Captures the whole 70's thing to a T. Colors, execution, design. I'll wager it's a handful at the track! Bob F I've seen many old builds of pricey kits on eBay and have balked. While there is more work to be done in ressurecting an old kit, the results speak for themselves. Perhaps I'll save one yet......
  3. I believe my Mums did that back in the early 70's It was called decoupage I think. it seems like a related technique Nice looking Bob F
  4. You are of course right Dave. Perhaps "solitary" is more appropriate? Either way, there is great community here and you are right about clubs and such. I am here in Maryland Iand I have yet to attend a MAMA meeting. This is something I will remedy soon though. Bob
  5. I see that opinions vary, as they should. My post was meant to perhaps bring one or two out from behind their screens to participate is all. I allot time for building, playing guitar, and the many things I do as recreation. I play less Battlefield II than I used to as a direct result of finding this forum and starting to build again due to the excitment it rekindled in me. That I play my game less is a good thing for my building and being able to share what can be described as a fairly lonely hobby with like minded individuals is a blessing to my mind. I'm glad there is a difference of opinion and taste in this world, or we might all still be driving black Fords. Perish the thought. Bob Frias
  6. Roth kits are always a PITA. But would we change that? No way! Good looking so far... Bob F
  7. Somewhat true? Long in the tooth? Hmmmmm You are certainly entitled but I would add that advice of any nature [of which you need none], is by definition, lengthy. All the same, the fact that some rang true tickles me. The truth is that it is sound, and my motivation is to get others to join in on what it is we are up to. Being as this is a solitary thing, communion is MUY IMPORTANTE' We are all in this together. I wish more to join......... Going to spray some primer.... Bob
  8. I am relatively new here. Being member 3,850 takes a bit of pressure off me. This post is a call to those who are on the fringe. Those who wish to post, yet feel their work somehow [perhaps in your own mind], falls short. This post is for YOU!. The guy reading this and perhaps awaiting a revelation of some sort. The type of guy who loves what it is we do, but seems unsure. ALL hobbies, be they crocheting, stamp collecting, used Band Aid collector, have their Superstars. It's indeeed easy to get caught up in hype and awe in anothers accomplishment. By contrast we limit our own deeds and makings. By virtue of this awe we marginalize our very selves in terms of skill, labor, and in general our love for a thing. In our case, model cars. This is a study in the human psyche. It is in fact, a call to arms for those who wish to be a part of this community, but fail to push the button at some crucial moment. This post is not for those well entrenched builders who have ego enough to stand perhaps even public ridicule [which I have not seen here], or outright disdain. It occurs to me that if you post your project one of two things may happen. 1: Total disregard for what you have posted or written. In this case I would caution you that there are many who hold their collective tongues instead of reaching for some far reaching compliment. If you know it's not up to snuff, they are certain. Does this mean you are not a legitimate modeler? On the contrary! As soon as you put Cyano to plastic, you are a modeler. I got paid for an early blues gig many years ago. I stepped in for an ill guitarist and got paid for it. Did that make me a proffesional guitarist? Technically, yes. A good one? Jury is still out, but deep inside, I know the answer to that. And that is what keeps us growing..... 2: The first time winner! Aaaahhh, to be a winner. The American Dream as it's held. But truth be told, if you garner praise off the bat you have been at this a while and are only now finding this venue. In which case, keep building, more is to come. Those of us who are seasoned [i'm being kind here, as I am older], can ALWAYS learn a thing or two from new modelrs. I have learned a great deal already by searching the archives and asking questions. I am new to many of the new products that we are now enjoying. I ask questions concerning the materials I am interseted in and have yet to get an "Are you daft?" type comment. There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers I have built cars for many years. BUT with many years in between with nothing whatsoever. During that time MANY have come onto the scene to be INCREDIBLE builders. David T, Jay Savarese are just 2 of those builders. I built models before they were born or were mere hatchlings [no offense to your Mums guys]. These guys are a wealth of info. Look at what they are doing. Study how they got there. It's OK to ape them, but discover your own style. How many Dale Paeones were there before he showed up? NONE! Building ANYTHING requires only 2 things. A commitment. And the level you set in YOUR mind. I build Superdetailed cars. I build standard "Plugwire and paint" affairs. It's all up to you. What is a constant is this simple idea. Have fun. Keep it up to your own expectations. Never build for anyone else other than yourself. Did I mention have fun???? This brings to mind something from the music side of my life. Are you here to make musiscians happy, or are you here to make that booty move? Both builds have something to offer. Pick one and stick to it till the end. Your friend with with Squadron all over his hands and not a paper towel in sight. Robert J Frias AKA: Dragline
  9. I have this kit and I have some candy green for it. But RED looks beautiful. 2 Chevy's in a row. You like Bowties I guess???? But then again, who doesn't?? Bob Frias
  10. This is a very nice looking build. You do things that I like to do, like subtle wear and grease marks. All in all a VERY nice looking build of one of my favorite cars ever. I'll race you in my 1970 Go Mango Super Bee when we are both done....... Oh wait, not fair. It has a Hemi...lol Don't forget a dipstick! Bob Frias
  11. I laid down 3 Med coats of Testors 1814 clear and the result is better than I could have hoped for. Thanks to Ron Hamilton for the inspiration and wisdom. My pics don't do it justice, and I am pleased with how my skills keep moving forward. I attribute this to ModelCarsMag Forums, and all you nice people.
  12. Quick you say??? Hmmmmmmmmm.... Gorgeosity. Balanced and well executed. I have yet to see a B body in a color I don't like. Bob Frias
  13. Overdoing vehicles is the latest craze guys!!! Some peoples taste is all in their mouth. Bob F
  14. And so, taking Ron's words to heart I will clear coat it. it seems to me I remember cars not really shining that much years ago. But memory is a subjective thing I think. So here are a few progress shots of todays and last night festivities. I decalled it when I got home from work and the rest is from last night. This is so much more fun that a detailed over the top build. I must do this more often and save the detail builds for gradual completetion this way I can enjoy this hobby of ours/mine more.
  15. An update since yesterday. The chassis is drying after a reshoot to cover some minor holidays but the running gear is all dry and the motor will get atention today. Not certain which Air Grabber is correct, but they are both orange and I can mock em to make sure. Once the chassis is dry i'll lightly weather it to look somewhat used and get it assembled. Turning out fun, which is the idea. Should I clearcoat or just wax the Go Mango? I'm thinking wax since it's super smooth. I may end up decaling it and applying BMF today with a wax job in the near future. Any thoughts? EDIT: Thanks Bluesman Mark for the primer heads up. I went to my LHS and there they were. I bought a can of each of the ones you mentioned. I now have grey! Yeay!
  16. Candies & Hughes cars were always detailed and spotles when they were at the track. You nailed the color perfectly as well as the overall feel of it being meticulously prepared as they were in real life. BRAVO! Bob Frias
  17. To quote my favorite NY Pigeon. RIDONKULOUS!!!! I'd leave it just like that. Why ruin it with wheels and a motor?? I must go build now............. I don't see any murals in my future, but then again, I lack such mad skills. Bob Frias
  18. You are correct sir! It is Go Mango. I checked the top of the can since the paper surround was lost when I heated the can in warm water. Your memory serves you well George. I have the chassis and motor primed and painted. When they can be moved I'll snap a couple of pix. Interesting thing about this kit is that the front coils and radiator shroud are not mentioned in the directions, yet there they are. Which is great of course. Not sure which Air Grabber or air cleaner goes with the Hemi though. I painted both Air Grabbers Tamiya orange. What a striking color. I painted the non plated air cleaner and I hope that is the one. I'd rather not dechrome. As it is I had to dechrome the valve covers and shock absorbers. oh well.... That's what makes it fun.... Bob Frias
  19. I love a good A body. I have owned 2 of them. I actually blew up a Slant 6!!! Wonderful color choice and execution. Your diligence paid off handsomely. Now, back to my Super Bee. Bob Frias Dragline
  20. So, I usually put my projects up until the days start to get longer and cooler. I've been doing that since I was a kid. You know, get out and play while you can and the weather is nice. Well that was many moons ago and I live in Baltimore where the weather is nicer than my new England upbringing. I have been busy browsing and offering a word here or there but this site makes me crazy. The bug and fire stay lit. I thank all of you for this and so I am eschewing my past habit to build during the warm days of summer. I will be dusting off the super detailed Garlits 1R build at some point but I thought I'd do a simpler less detailed build and I could think of nothing better than a 60's Mopar Muscle Car to get the juices flowing. OK, so it's a 1970 car. Sue me...... LOL Paint is the absolutley stunning Testors Gomango. As you can see this paint lays down quite nicely. There is a complete can of paint on this and it's so thin I was completely stunned it didn't build up. I just kept adding color and it kept getting richer. Holes and lower valance filled with Squadron of course. Tamiya fine white primer was layed down as a base. Do they make grey???? I filed off the bee on the hood so I could apply the decal. I think it'll look nicer Motor and undercarriage get paint today. I using the Hemi of course. Plug wires, battery and a few other details will be added. Lots of BMF as well. I'm kinda doing this as a modified restoration so I'll be painting the scoops semi gloss black and I sanded off the drip edge for a cleaner look. The interior leaves a lot to be desired but I'll pick out details in paint and call it a day. The undercarriage will get a slightly used look with wear and some rust perhaps. Like it's loved but not a trailer queen ya know? Bob Frias Dragline
  21. I am jealously drooling here. Thanks for that......... It's so well done I am not sure where to begin.... I'll start where I'll end up, by saying. This is a master build.... I think I won't wait till the days get longer and start building again. See what ya did Rat!!!!!!!!! Ya made me start building before the fall. Happy now?????? SUPERB............ Bob Frias
  22. So sweet I had to run a blood suger check! Nice detail and overall cleanliness as well. Bob Frias
  23. Let me be the first to say MORE PICTTURES. Looks fantastic.. I have one of these but I cannot find the body.... Why is that? How did this come to pass. How was it allowed?? Who knows. Instead of dropping little parts onto the floor, I drop bodies. Problem is. THEY DISSAPEAR....... Well built and nicely painted. Bob F
  24. How can it be anything else but Chuck Most?? Music is many things to many people.. Does it make you happy is the only question that needs to be asked. Everything else is nonsense. This is coming from a serious Metal guy, so take it to heart. Music is in the heart...........There it shall dwell always. Bob F PS: If this seems philosophical, good... Music comprises 90% of my waking day in one form or another. If you took stock of your own lives you may soon realize how important music is. For those of you that do recognize this, know something else. It is only but a fraction of what music truly is and can be in your life. Others have said it better, but with no more passion than I.
  25. All excellent points mates.. MrObsessive... My God man. Are those your mitts??? If so, I applaud all you do simply from a logistical standpoint. Then, I look at what's in your hand and I worry not at all brother. More to the point though.... I'm not certain how I'll tackle this except to say factory stock.... I have enough wild $hit on the workbench as it is. When the days begin to grow longer, so shall I begin my task of creating something in plastic. Till then, I remain a viewer only.... Thanks for all the patter friends... Truly. Bob F
