@Rockin' Rodney Rat @Rocking Rodney RatSay it isn't so!?. -
Spent a little time rereading this thread... for several reasons. Primary reason is refreshing my memory to start the next to last phase: White Glue Mockup. Second, to check out a couple of modifications @Dennis Lacyand @Rocking Rodney Ratdid during their tribute builds. Third, wanted to check on @bill-e-boyand @alan bartonand thank each of them for their continued updates on their tribute builds. And, I may go back again to find the names of those that had an interest to join this tribute build. But, until I do, if you are following along and would truly consider enlisting, do it now! Worked on the tailgates yesterday... Matched the half round filler... A drop of CA... Ready for finish filing and sanding... Trimmed off the bed hinges... Filed off the excess... Looks better! Nice looking pair of '29 PU Tailgates... Until next time... I'll leave you with this:

@Sergey Your scratch-building skills are beyond kompare! Kraftsmanship komes from hands on experience with a konuntless number of tools and techniques!! I'll be watching over your shoulder, Brother -KK -
Let's go back to the beginning, RRR opened with: "Time to start a new project and I figured a drag car is in order. This is a concept I've been mulling over for a while. [Years! -KK] AMT recently re-issued the shorty VW bug kit they call the 'Superbug Gasser' (?) whatever. The VW bug body lends itself to a AA/FA style (I know, it's been done before) and I figured I'd give it a try. I'm using an MPC funny car chassis components. I'm not in love with these MPC frames, but it will do fine for this project. The frame will be shortened. The plans are to heavily modify the body with fenders cut off, top chopped, front extended and body made taller... [yiks! kan it really be?] let's rev up the Sawzall, shall we????". Remember the VW Bug AA-FA Before & After? And then the mock-up? For those of you that missed the WIP thread at link: RRR lays awake at night staring at the bedroom ceiling konkockting these wild build plans. And, visually collecting parts from various kits that his eyes have memorized over the decades of model kar building! We met on the left coast over thirty years ago and have built several model kars together. Kan you imagine having a conversation about what you're going to make followed by watching the step-by-step progress while it comes to fruition? RRR has been an inspiration to me and others around the world. Krafting a kustom from scratch and seeing into the future as one gathers parts and pieces together, is the product of a 3D visionary mind; the trial and error of experience and decades of training your dexterity, both mentally and physically. I want to thank you for your friendship and mutual support over the years! As far as your skills... they are greatly envied by me and several of your followers! Right? -KK

Don't you sometimes wonder what happens when the construction ends and the photo shoot starts? And, to top that... the builder checks out early with no forwarding address!! This is what I got from RRR shortly after he finished: -KK

Keep on keepin' on, Brother! Here's a little tip: Cheap tape! Look closely, liberal use strengthens the body structure while working on it... Had to bring the bottom edge of the kowl down to match the doors... on both sides... '29 PU Kowl Extensions... Both sides... What does your bench work area look like? Thin cardboard function as turntables while working during mockup sessions - able to check out both sides without taking everything apart and re-assembling... -KK
-
More detail work going on... Scrap thin plastic the edge of a For Sale sign... Soon it will be a forward skirt... Trim to fit... Excess removed... Under the forward edge of the skirt... Inside & out... Open up the area for the tongue... Add a little support... Work continues on the tongue... Box in the goose neck... Add a little putty... Here & there... -KK

That is the best part of a build, Luke! Finding just the right donor kit parts, sometimes results in a plea from a well known resource. Fellow builders are awesome partners when it comes to bringing the right parts to any project. Just recently, one of our brothers here on MCM forum came up short on a part for a long desired build. Shortly after the request went out... a builder from the opposite side of the country came up with the part! Taking the project one step further, the kit supplied wheels of choice were found in the companion kit. Again the word went out and a trade was made satisfyingly both parties and now has two builders now looking at building a long time shelf dwelling model kit & are heading to their respective benches! True story!! -KK

1963 Chevy Nova Wagon Street Rod FINISHED 3/20/22
Kit Karson replied to Dennis Lacy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Building tip of the day: "The whole chassis pan will be flat black and never be displayed." This is where I get caught up in a build! KISS or Detail? -KK -
Wait! Wait, there's more! We played the name game and RRR has been collecting sponsor decals... -KK

Best tip of the day, "I used a brand new #11 blade and found it easier to control the trimming by holding the blade with my fingers rather than in a handle.", @Dennis Lacy -KK

This has become one of the most watched threads on MCM! Thanks for all the kind komments not only on my build (greatly appreciated, btw) but also on all of the projects in this epic thread! Oh, the challenge still stands... add your build to this thread!! We'd love to see more tribute pickups come together here. Made a bit more progress on my '29: Need to shorten the tongue... A couple of cuts... a little bonding... Mean while, the space between the aprons and in front of the kooler has been added... So, the front fenders have to be removed, finally! Knowing when to separate parts, depends on the komponent's integral strength required during the modification process... try to maintain as much structural support for as long as you kan, and then remove the excess piece(s) only when totally necessary. Even for me, waiting to separate the rear fenders for the tag-along trailer has been very nerve racking. Houston we have lift off and first stage separation!! Step-by-step mockup: Hook-up Rear Fenders Kooler And, the box... All together, now: 1929 Ford Pickup 80's Contemporary Street Rod - A @tim boyd tribute! @Dennis Lacy Thank you for your vision, regarding this thread, getting others involved in building their version of the 1929 Ford Pickup from an iconic era in hot rodding history has been amazing! -KK

Luke, While you weren't looking, several have jumped onboard with you little Ute! Guys that cut plastic for fun are sometimes more creative than an artist with a brush!! Takes guts to whittle away at something so inert. Old as it seems, when you plan your work... and you work your plan... success is just a step away! -KK

Amazing, right? Who'd a thunk?? Only other guy I know of that would paint a drag kar green... is Richard Rollins, Gas Monkey! RRR has several green drag kars, don't you Brother? Looks impressive from every angle! -KK

Awesome to see what others are doing! Here's the progress on the '29 PU trailer... Trimmed out the excess original frame work... Added the new framing... Test fit the axle & leaf springs... Need to kreate the forward shackle mounts... Drill a couple of alignment holes... Shortened the rear spring mounts. And, locate the mounting points on all four korners! Now, where do the running boards need to be cut off? -KK

@alan bartonalways looked at the John Buttera white roadster as a landmark step in hot rodding! Buttera had a very klean & sleek eye that he highlighted in his iconic Model A roadster. If you keep klose to his vision, your skills will do honor to his kreation. -KK
