How do you display your models?
lordairgtar replied to rmvw guy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is mine. I bought this at a clearance sale at a high end store. I think I paid $300 for it. It's in the actual living room of my apartment and the GF doesn't mind at all because it's nice furniture. -
Chroming 3D printed plastic
lordairgtar replied to NormL's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The issue with vacuum plating is that the finish will not survive in the environment. This is why Chrome Tech says so in their literature. Not for use on external parts, they will not chrome plastic grilles and other trim on a car. -
When the "solution" is the problem!
lordairgtar replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think going in at the end of the month was the big reason you had a long line. Of Course, Chicago is a big place and contains millions of automobiles. Here in Wisconsin, we have the same dilemma, the Milwaukee Metro area, which includes Milwaukee County Waukesha County, racine County and Kenosha County. Another nice thing they threw at us this year is they no longer have dedicated places to have your car tested. Now it's done at the dealer or mechanic shop. Tell me that isn't going to be fraught with fraudulent test data. The failure rate has already increased. Me thinks these places are selling expensive work and parts to a captive audience. -
Nice guitar collection. I decided to go another route with mine. I collect the cheapo guitars from the 70s and there abouts. I have a Hi-Lo Fender Strat copy and a Aria Pro XX, which is similar to a Flying V. They initially were bought to take as props to karaoke. (See avatar name). Now I keep an eye out for them as they are really cheap at rummage sales and look cool.

I seen those SSS,s painted red or that burnt orange color Datsun had in the day. I'm sure a google will find a paint chart for that car. There is a vintage J-car website that has proven interesting.

Not really all that rare, but we will never see them molded again....the 1966 Renwal Revivals. I have all but the Jordan which is hardest to find. I even have the Bugatti. Of all the ones I see for sale now and again, non were ever painted by the builder. I guess mostly because they were molded in color. The Duesenberg kit was actually released in two color variants of a light brown and dark brown. The colors were reversed for the second issue. Right now, my Bugatti is undergoing a build with upgraded chassis from a Corvette. If you remember, these kits had very basic chassis pans with similar wheels across the range and steel axles.

Did Hubley make promos ?
lordairgtar replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have that Hubley Rolls. Light blue in color and not a ripple, mold line or mis aligned bits anywhere. Minicraft must have really abused that mold. -

Galaxie Limited's '48 Chevy Coupe
lordairgtar replied to lordairgtar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yes, it is the Galaxie Chevy coupe. From Galaxie...."This tool was created using cad and the prototype body that was shown at the nnl last year. This is the second tool. We rejected the first one because the roof was not shaped correctly and after three tries at fixing it, they started over . . . at considerable cost. We haven't seen test shots from this one yet. They were supposed to be ready at the end of February. Now they say mid April". -

JoHans Mercedes Benz kits, AMT 53 Studebaker, AMT 58 Chevy, AMT 40 Fords, IMC 48 Ford, IMC Mark IV and J car, AMT and Revell 57 Chevys. None of those live in my collection now as they were built when I was a teen or younger. Can't forget those Renwal 66 Revival kits, too. I am amassing them now to build again.

When you think of the prices between then and now, when I was buying kits as a kid, I got a dollar a week allowance and I saved for a month to be able to buy the kit (which were about $2 then), paint, glue if needed and other things like X-acto handles. Now, with a month of putting away "fun money", I can get about two or three kits, or maybe a higher cost vintage kit plus paint, foil, detailing bits. It costs more, but hopefully we are able to spend more.

Why aren't all model kits awesome?
lordairgtar replied to Henchmen4Hire's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Aurora did just that. They marketed their auto kits with WWII markings. I remember building the jaguar with Spitfire type markings and camo paint. -

Seemed to me that after awhile, designers and engineers shifted around from company to company.
