1954 Buick Wildcat II ( no guts, no glory )
Chuck Most replied to trogdor's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nice seeing this dragged back to the front burner, Rick! You know I'll be tagging along. -
Good. Let the hate flow through you... I was born after all of these cars had ended production (except the Chevette), so the stigma they had when they were new cars is lost on me. If nothing else, it's nice to see something other than the same worn-out muscle car kits being reissued, for a change.

From their Facebook page- Thank you for your support and prayers. We are fortunate to have such caring and loyal customers. Because of our thorough safety procedures and incredible emergency support personnel, we were able to get everyone out safely. Although one of our buildings has been lost we are back at work today assessing what needs to be done and most operations are continuing as usual. Thank you again for your support and encouragement. -

I think Tom Coolidge at Promolite 2000 did cast a '70 at one time, but it is OOP now. -
Nice. Used, but clearly not abused.

Meijer's has models again.
Chuck Most replied to 2000-cvpi's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was just in Meijer's today, no models... but they DID have copies of Fine Scale Modeler for sale on the rack. -
I'll be buying several of these... and harrasing Round 2 to look into bringing back more '70's compacts- like the Pacer and Chevette!

Sounds like a couple of the guys I used to work with. Funny thing is, I have a neighbor who's a WWII vet, he owns a Toyota, and has had a few Volkswagens (including a couple buggies) over the years. I figure if he can forgive and forget, somebody who didn't even live through it could as well. Now, regarding the purple Auto World copies- it's just like the red ones, right- only a handful of each will be molded in the metallic purple?

Very cool indeed!

Hubcap Identification
Chuck Most replied to Hypermung's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yep, you got me on that. I was half right, anyway! -
Oh- and it (like Purple Power) seems to work best in a sealed container of some sort- I use a Glad clear plastic container with a snap-on lid.

Oh- and I owe Dave Roehrle a thanks for posting the original link and helping spread the word. As you might guess, Dave uses their stuff quite a bit. -
As far as the undercoat does, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's very consistent removing plating, not so much with the undercoat. Seems to depend on how thick it is.

They aren't listed as metallic purple, red, white, or whatever. You just kind of roll the dice and end up with whatever color you get.
-
Guess that would depend on local codes. I know at my old shop we'd use it for cleaning and hose it off the floors into the drains, and the city never gave us grief over it.

I'm leaning toward a kind of Slo-Tourer style- I'll work around the lack of interior parts by doing a scratchbuilt street-rod style interior. For power I'm leaning toward a Ford Terminator mill, and a low-slung chassis with at least some 18" wheels.

American manufacturers haven't gotten the swing of alphabetic or alphanumeric naming, to be honest. With Caddilac you have the CTS, STS, and DTS, and they all bear a strong resemblance to one another. When I was in the auto repair business, customers and mechanics alike were constantly confusing them. Lincoln's new nomenclature isn't much better.

Here's the thing though- of course everyone remembers the SS and big-block powered Chevelles, but the majority of them were just six-cylinder, four-door, mom-and-pop transportation modules. Same as this concept in the regard there was nothing really exceptional about them for their time. At its core, the Chevelle was simply a mid-size family car. I don't see how using the name on a modern car would dilute the name in any way. A lot of guys weren't happy when the Impala and Malibu names were put on front wheel drive 'family' sedans, but that did not seem to hinder the sucess of those cars, and nobody thinks any less of the 'old' Impalas and Malibus as a result.

Dave- try using Westley's Bleech-Wite. That stuff can strip chrome plating in as little as an hour- often you can let it soak an hour or two, take out the sprue, and blast it under some hot water from the sink faucet and the chrome falls right off.

I'm thinking of a Dual Ghia as well. Yes, I know that was built on a Dodge chassis, but I think this might work for most of the 'dirty parts'.
