What is the purple pond?
sjordan2 replied to '08SEAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Purple Power was extremely effective for me in removing chrome overnight, and other unknown paints. I would recommend that the OP go to the "How Do I" and "Tips, tricks, etc." for endless threads on this subject. -
Another great deal on Ebay
sjordan2 replied to Ben's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That answer was from a question I sent him just for grins, asking (1) Did he mistakenly type in the wrong price, and (2) Was he totally insane? His answer that came to my inbox: Dear skipjordan2, 1) value is such a relative term...it might appear as if i may have entered a wrong price to those who are less informed as to the rarity of this albino beauty...2) sanity is such a relative term....the subtle yet razor thin line between insanity and genius is sometimes blurred in the eyes of those who are myopically challenged... - pocketwocket Myopically challenged? I think he needs new glasses. -
STOLEN KITS / PACKAGE
sjordan2 replied to OLESHEP63's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
SHOCK OF SHOCKS: Less than a minute ago (1:39 Eastern), a UPS guy knocked on my door and handed me my Amazon order. So, criticize when due, but compliment, too. -

You may have seen this security video of a Fedex guy throwing a computer monitor over a fence. Sadly, YouTube has a few other similar examples. -
STOLEN KITS / PACKAGE
sjordan2 replied to OLESHEP63's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The worst I've seen is UPS. I've seen them come up the steps to my place, leave the package at the door, without ever having knocked or rung the bell. -
The low number of responses may be due to the fuzzy pictures, which make it hard to study. If you back the camera away some more, then crop into the shots, it would be easier to get a good look at the model.

Car ads win Super Bowl
sjordan2 replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's odd that, like the Camaro commercial, so many of these spots ran prior to the Super Bowl. This is the first Super Bowl I can remember, in years, where the game was actually better than the commercials. The other highlight was M.I.A.'s finger malfunction during the halftime show. -
Car ads win Super Bowl
sjordan2 replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Another one of my favorites was the VW spot that was two commercials in one: In the beginning, a dog goes through fitness routines so he can chase a Beetle; it turns out this spot is being viewed in the Star Wars bar scene where an alien says he preferred last year's spot with the little boy in a Darth Vader costume (an all-time classic); the real Darth Vader shows up and does his mojo on on the guy. Brilliant. -
Others may disagree (this stuff is always a matter of taste), but as a group I think the car ads rose to the top. My favorite: Another installment of Chrysler's ode to Detroit, this time with Clint Eastwood, in a very smart campaign that began with Eminem. Next favorite: Chevy Silverado. The 2012 apocalypse predicted by the Mayan calendar has come; guy unearths his Silverado from the urban wreckage, drives through the destroyed environment (featuring a Big Boy statue in flames) and meets up with his buddies, where he is offered Hostess Twinkies. "Where's Dave?" he asks. Dave didn't make it. He was driving a Ford. Takes guts (and confidence in Chevy's law firm) to imply that you could die if you used the competition's product. Only a few other good spots keeping up the Super Bowl tradition, this being one of the weakest years ever. Worst of the bunch: a sober Bud dud about the end of prohibition. With a huge budget and an epic scale, it was an epic fail.

Making my own license plates
sjordan2 replied to Rob McKee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Also, those "make your own plate" sites do not have the correct type fonts for each state. You're better off making your own. Using Google and your own software, it's all free. -

It is NOT the easiest way if you're looking for current plates. Most of the plates on that site are outdated. -
Die Cast Opinions
sjordan2 replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I see everyone here, including myself, defending the fact that diecasts are models, and when taken apart, repainted, and modified to your own desires are pretty much the same as plastic in terms of respectability as model kit builds, regardless of material. But no one has stepped up here to say they disagree, and that diecasts aren't worthy of the respect of plastic/resin model kits, which has been a defensive claim on the part of plastic kit builders. Is there anyone here who thinks that reworked diecasts aren't worthy of the same response as plastic/resin kits? If so, step up and make your case. -

However, you need to check how recent the license plates are on those sites. Just the other day, I was checking Tennessee plates on one of them and they didn't have the current design. I found what I needed by a simple Google Images search for blank Tennessee license plate, which yielded the proper result and is easy to adapt for custom numbers. -
Very, very nice. Do you remember exactly what body paint you used?

Rattle can + cooler air
sjordan2 replied to SFC_Allen's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hmm...since you live in the UK, may I assume you're talking -2 Celsius? That would be 32F in the U.S. -
One car care reference I tried was a recommendation to use Vaseline on rubber parts including tires. Looked fine on my Corvette, and definitely prolonged the life of rubber body seals that are notoriously prone to crumbling, though it wasn't particularly long-lasting. I wonder how it would look on model tires? I also wonder what they used in this 1935 factory archive photo to make the tires so glossy (and why they put it on the treads)...I wouldn't be surprised if they painted the tires gloss black just for photo purposes.

Scratchbuilding: What's your philosophy?

Ooohh. New title. Much better. Yayy. -
Scratchbuilding: What's your philosophy?
sjordan2 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Exactly. That's why I suggested that a different title would have kept things on track. That's my only crusade here: titles that are specific and make sense. -
Scratchbuilding: What's your philosophy?
sjordan2 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't understand the point. So far, this thread has initiated some very good how-tos, but eventually you won't be able to find them, just like the useless 60+ pages at "Lazy Barn Door Garage," which is essentially the OP's personal chat room. Cranky, I think you're aching to have your own website and forum. There's no reason why you can't use easily available development tools to build your site and keep coming back here to alert us about what's going on there. If your initial idea for this thread was to ask people about their scratchbuilding challenges, you could have focused it better with a thread title like, "What are your scratchbuilding challenges?" instead of a cute, wide-open title like this. -
Scratchbuilding: What's your philosophy?
sjordan2 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a great thread, but it also suffers from being a great thread. We're already at page 4, and as this continues to more and more pages, like the "lazy barn door garage," the wide variety of content will be lost with so many pages that subjects will be impossible to wade through and find. And this site's search feature won't be of much help. There is no indexing, no subforums, it's just random. I don't really know how a Scratchbuilding topic differs from the Tips, Tricks and Tutorials subforum, but it seems to me that the material here belongs there and would be better displayed there under individual, specific thread titles, so people can identify them, find them, and learn from them. -

There's a wealth of information here... http://www.italianhorses.net/Tutorials/tutorials.htm I'm sure there are plenty of members here who can direct you to other information, such as basic plumbing and wiring, etc. -
About the upcoming convert. Hudson...
sjordan2 replied to Jon Cole's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm sure it has been. But this thing is so loaded with chrome requirements (and I haven't seen a good BMF job on it yet, not even from the makers) that I wouldn't touch it. There are plenty of kits out there that have dealt with this concern and made beautiful chrome trim. In my opinion, this kit in any form suffers from lack of proper chrome engineering and will always look like a toy kit. -

It would have been better if ALL of that huge hunky chrome, especially the side trim, had been separate chrome-plated pieces.
