It seems to me that no matter how much research you have from online sources, magazines, books, etc., you can never be sure about replicating the actual color of a car without having the 1:1 car in front of you. Internet colors and printed hard-copy colors can be very misleading. For example, there are a zillion different variations of "Bugatti blue," and I'll be darned if it can tell which shade to use on a specific example of my 1935 original Bugatti T59. Another complicating factor is one that I learned from military/battleship builders, which is that reduced scale changes your perception of the color on the model; for example, a model battleship should really have a lighter color paint from the actual original - based on a thread responding to a person who got a perfect match of paint from the battleship - because it appears differently at 1:72 scale.

1965 Pickup & Hydro Boat
sjordan2 replied to Paverblack's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
How are the boat and trailer out of scale? In the 1:1 world, both come in a wide range of sizes (though the trailer tires do look too large). -
I agree, that's a great job on what appears to be a very rare kit. I wonder if they made a street Scorpion version.

Like the Real or Model from last month, this one also has a Pink Pig version. As well as several diecasts.

What an exquisitely beautiful piece of work. Amazing detail. While I'm not jazzed about the paint choice, which is very non-Ferrari and I doubt any 1:1 owner would choose for restoraton, this is absolutely spectacular!

First Muscle Car Kit
sjordan2 replied to Stang88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What muscle cars are most interesting to you? Take it from there. If there's any kind of selection in modeling kits, it's muscle cars. -
I'm also a member. What's your question?

I'm copying all of this over to a document for reference. More reasons to have a magazine article on the subject. -
Die Cast Opinions

There is so much online misinformation on this subject. Everything you've mentioned is excellent material for a photo tutorial in the magazine. I nominate Mark to write it! I might add that I don't see a need for a separate forum subject on building diecasts, which can be handled with existing topics like Workbench and Under Glass, but it wouldn't hurt to have reviews of new diecasts on the forum as in the magazine. -

I should have mentioned that I'm referring specifically to my 1:18 (closer to 1:15) Bburago Bugatti T59 kit. Larger kit, larger issues, as you guys have noted. -
Beautiful work. It's good to see a street version.

Die Cast Opinions

Makes sense that normal styrene painting techniques would follow once you've gotten to primer, but I'm concerned about the prior steps. I've heard of different types of paint strippers, such as aircraft stripper, to remove the baked-on factory paint (which I would prefer to do so detail holds up, instead of just painting over the paint). I'm told the primer should be self-etching -- any best choices? What tools would you recommend to remove things like high-relief rivets and other exterior parts that are cast as part of the body, or to drill holes? What about chopping a top? These are considerations where I don't think an X-Acto knife or regular sandpaper would work. Is a rotary tool a good choice? If so, can you recommend the proper grinding wheels, drills or saws? -

If you knew anything about Pocher kits, you would know what it has do do with anything and what it has to do with your post. -

I wish I had half the interest in the Camaro that I have in that killer Model T. -

While there may be other subjects that make sense, I think there would be interest in a specific Military topic under "Other Models." -

According to the Supreme Court, corporations are now people. I don't have to marry them, but at least I can date them. -

I think you are exaggerating the interest in this part of the hobby. To me, it's an executional thing, mostly technique, which I think is of more limited interest than you describe and, personally, I don't think it's worthy of a special section except as Harry noted. On the other hand, regarding organization of the forum, I would like to make a minor comparison with scaleauto.com: • This forum has a big superiority in separating "On the Workbench" from "Under Glass." That's one of their major weaknesses. • But I think they have an advantage in their "Tips & Techniques" section, which has separate subforums for: - Painting and bodywork - Interior detailing - Engine, drivetrain and chassis -
Die Cast Opinions
sjordan2 replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The prebuilt and painted diecast section in the magazine is one of my favorite parts, and I see no reason why the magazine shouldn't devote a feature to the subject of building/rebuilding diecast models. Metal kits require a lot of special techniques that are different from plastic models and that would be helpful to readers, such as stripping and painting of prebuilt models, bodywork, adhesives, etc. For example, when you're dealing with most metal bodies, you can pretty much forget about #11 X-Acto blades and typical sandpapers. Are there different approaches to dealing with diecast metal vs. white metal kits and parts? These are subjects that Scale-Master and Art Anderson, among others, are very familiar with. I think this is such a complex subject that it would merit a multi-part series in the magazine, like Alex Kustov's Ferrari 275 GTB build journal. I'm sure many of the builders on this forum can figure it out for themselves, but there's nothing like having an experienced builder in this area help people like me cut to the chase and demonstrate best practices. -

Bburago issued a number of their diecasts in kit form, which is nice because their diecasts are accurate enough but have plenty of room for improvement. They're somewhat intimidating though, since they require some difficult (for me) body work. Everything else is plastic. I have their 1:24 Bugatti Atlantic and 1:18 (closer to 1/15) Bugatti T59 Grand Prix kits. I really wish I could get those bodies cast in resin. I checked with Ma's resin, and while their prices weren't sky-high, it's too much for my budget. -
