Positives to come from the Revell Deal?
Dave Van replied to GMP440's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If I valued your opinion half as much as you value mine I'd prove my work in all fields....but I don't so no need. Thanks for playing at any rate!! Ignore button pressed..... -
Positives to come from the Revell Deal?

Gotta keep up.....I went into detail on the scale thing other tread. My info come from working, freelance, for Monogram, then RM since 1980's as I had access to most NASCAR shops, I had credentials. Last project I did work on was 1957 Ford. That Big Boy for $20 was more than likely the marked down price.....I never saw it in a retailer for that....even close out at Hobby Lobby was $22.....thanks!! -

The new Cup kits were first based off old Monte Carlo tooling....1/24 scale. When they sold well enough the new tools fell under the old rule I talked about above. thx -

Lots to unpack here. The scale change came about from the Revell and Monogram merger. But it had a number of 'reasons'. If you recall the Roush IMSA GTO Mustang kits (Motorcraft, 7-11, Folgers) were announced as 1/24 Monogram kits in theory to compliment the Monogram GTP Zackspeed and Probe kits. (all 1/24) When the call came to tool them in 1/25 they moved them to Revell as to not mix scales/brands. Soon after that those in charge decide two scale were a costly pain. Management picked 1/25 as being morepopular with US builders and all new tooling was to be cut in 1/25.....all but NASCAR Cup kits so the line started in 1983 would be constant. Note 1/25 was deemed the best seller among the two choices. The exotics that were 'new' tooled in 1/24 were for the most part engineered by RoG and aimed to the international market. Revell USA got to market them to the US market at the range of other Revell USA offerings in hope it would greatly increase sales here. And a number of older 1/24 tools have been altered with 'new tooling' on box.....and the kits do have new tooling, in 1/24, but you are correct ...not all new tooling. -

That Monogram UP Big Boy loco was msrp around $10 but RoG was $30......for a tool long paid for....that 'fee' to import is to high for me......and do not see that going away./ -

Bob Johnson of Revell Monogram is my source....I like 1/24 too....but it was the number one complaint they got from US builders. It's why they went to 1/25 for all new tooling..... -

The retired analyst in me says it IS a loss to our hobby. I was allowed to work with Revell on a number of Model King Revell kits. I really doubt Dave Burket and I will have the personal relationship with the new owners that we had with Revell USA. So other than maybe some Moebius/Model King kits private issue kits are no more. -

USA kit builders hated Monogram's use of 1/24......so no win in the scale wars. -

To bummed to think about 'what may be' other than all the folks that lost jobs......and we lost a model company. (USA based) -

During my banking analyst days I worked with a number of Europeans. They came to the US just so they could own a US muscle car......not affordable in Europe. I'd drive my 73 Javelin 3 - 4 times a month and all my Euro friends just wanted to look at cars during lunch!! So there are some that love US iron. But buy a company.....we'll see. -

Well....still doing some work with other hobby companies that may frown on spilling at first sign of trouble. If any one can...it may be Ed.....but he may want to work again too. Not being snide about it...... Who knows what will fall out of all this.....it's not final until May....and there is a new company in CA that could use some good people....and a newly reorganized model group at Pegasus too......so we will see. -

True....if I build one kit a day I will not be able to build what I have. But new and updated product drives the hobby. I do not see new stuff coming. To bad too.....I had a sneak at things coming......doubt we see them now. -

Going to be a wait and see. The current MSRP is about the max the hobby will pay now. If they raise the price they will sell less than Tamiya does in the US market. IMHO Only!! -

Thank you. For digging up the info.....and confirming what I thought about the 'deal'. When I was still at the bank and did 'due diligence' on commercial investment loans $50K was what we called 'lunch money' something we'd overlook. $3.9M is almost nothing in commercial corporation money. -

Don't you think it was cheap??? Thanks for digging up info... The retired bank analyst in me says bargain!!! -

THAT was REALLY cheap....without due diligence information.....seems like no body wanted Revell.....if the end price is the $3.9M....WOW -

I pay yearly for my website domain, most do today, so it may float out there for a while. This whole thing had little to do with the day to day operators of Revell USA. They were doing their job....it all fell apart due to factors out of their control. And operating in China is no easy task. It's kinda become a 'tar baby'....it was easy to get into but almost impossible to get out. I was offered a job in the hobby biz once bet required travel to China 3-4 times a year. EVERYONE told me not to do it. It was a no win job. -

I was actually referring to Cerberus Capital Management era........I didn't even think I needed to sepcicfy...my error. MB was at best only fair in it's running of Chrysler, Fiat not much better......showing how companies, all 3 above, do not know how to run a company and make it successful here. Watch....the Fiat and Alfa brands will be gone again in a few years from the USA. I agree....I felt Revell was a deal at $10M. The bank analyst in me would have given the thumbs up if 'Due Diligence' came out as the courts stated. But a small company like Revell that is a niche manufacture and with other ways to make big money faster here....no one bit. From a personal side after working with Revell since 1985 I doubt I will ever get to again. Only thing sadder is all the friends that found out they didn't have jobs at lunch on Friday the 13th. Final note. Being raised and surrounded by people that served in WWII in Europe for the duration and longer (why my wife is a French citizen) I have a good personal 2nd hand accounting on the past history of Europe. That was many years ago....things change...but let's not wash away the past as is the fashion for many. thx -

Like what happened to Chrysler.......... I lost a model buddy of 36 years Monday.....now we loose Revell a 'buddy' for more than 50 years. Glad I have so many kits in the stash. -
