Here's an outside shot I took today in partial sun. Amateur mistake - The object on the far left is the windshield of my pickup truck! I had the diorama sitting on the hood for the photo.

Lance, I'm going to experiment with making dust clouds from the tires by stretching out cotton balls. I've seen burnout smoke done this way, and it looked pretty good. The trick might be getting the clouds the right "dust" colors.

UPDATE: I made a desert race diorama for the Beetle. It's posted in the dioramas section http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103071.

Hey guys, I finished this VW Beetle Baja racer a couple weeks ago. Here's a small diorama I made for it showing it in a race. It's just a piece of Styrofoam covered with dirt, a few plants, and rocks. I used a heat gun to make ruts where the wheel tracks are. For the blue sky photo background, I set up an old ironing board my wife painted. I dirtied up the Bug a little with some real dirt. There are driver and passenger figures inside. This was an easy and fun project. I hope you like it!

The flares will be nice! I've always liked the Fitch Sprint roof that comes with those Corvair kits, and the rear deck lid with spoiler and air vents. Just a couple thoughts.

Looking good, Jacob! Your Bug has a lot more complicated mods than the one I just finished, and you're doing a bang-up job on them! I'm eager to see it finished!

Yes, it is, Harry. It's a bit off center too. I was afraid the drill bit would grab and ruin the pipe, so I stopped drilling. But, hey, it's got a mirror! I think I'll add the two outside mirrors, too!
Ben, I agree. The Bug will get some weathering and dirtying up when I put it on the desert race diorama I'm building for it. I want it to look like it's in a race - not so clean!
