Given the level / quality of competition I was fortunate to take 3rd place Trucks and Vans with my Revell Hasegawa "Hippie" bus.

I was there.. This show/contest gets better and better every year. This year almost 300 entrants and almost a 1,000 models....armor, aviation, ships, sci- fi, figures...and of course automotive. Not to mention a horde of vendors. 8 Hours is not enough to take it all in.

The AMT Laquer in rattle cans back in the early 60s sure had a unique aroma.... in some interesting colors. I remember when the Revell Roth Road agent kit first came out....my brother chose AMT's "Orchid Silk" to paint it... strange lavender metallic.

Large scale red vintage hot rod, ideal toy?
styromaniac replied to Guy young's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My guess...Aurora Motorized 1932 Ford Hot Rod....kinda heavy handed red plastic...cool box art. https://goo.gl/images/nf8gvU -

1932 Ford Roadster: Channeled, Nailhead-Powered Early 50's Hot Rod

FYI....I believe this fine rendition of a traditional style rod won first place on Sunday the 27th at the model contest held at The Grand National Roadster Show on Sunday. Nice work. -
Think I have that kit. Accurate Miniatures made some detailed, challenging builds. Think I'll follow along.

Um, it's the new tool "Slingster"....not the old tool "Sizzler".

Silver Sapphire Little Deuce Coupe - engine fitting - Jan 24
styromaniac replied to Phildaupho's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Surprised this icon of rock & rod history hasn't turned up in 1/24-25th scale before....at least not that I can recall. If memory serves...it was rendered in 1/32nd scale by Aurora as The Ram Rod kit...to accompany their other kits like The Wolf Wagon, Shift in Drifter, Beatnik Box, etc. -
Best thing about it may be that gloss black finish...so smooth looking for a rattle can enamel! Well done!

Actually Dave...I think that's terrazzo...but we get yer point.

Peter - A decade ( or two ) ago I used to pick up an old kit here and there at club meetings and model shows...but then I discovered EBay...and that was when I started running out of space ( the kits you see in those shelves are 2 or 3 deep ! ) I've since backed off...the old original kits are scarcer and scarcer and the prices are skyrocketing. I've decided to quit acquiring and actually try to build a kit or two. Nice looking truck by the way. P.S. Those Monogram big box '30, '34 and '36 Ford kits you show were easy to get the boxes for but hard to find intact kits of...guess they were quite popular for collectors.

Tom Daniel - Most Famous Kit Designer Ever?
styromaniac replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think that about sums up the success story of those kits...ease of assembly, accurate renditions of what's on the box art. ( same winning formula for Monogram"s earlier successes with their Black Widow, Green Hornet, Blue Beetle etc. kits as well as their Starbird kits like the Predicta, Orange Hauler. Somewhat toy like level of detail but simple enough to not frustrate the young builder...molded in body color to minimize painting ...lots of chrome ) . I preferred Revell's "show and go" series of subjects ( Tommy Ivo, Mickey Thompson, Orange Crate, Swindler, all the Roth stuff...for their challenging level of detail...but I don't recall ever finishing one of those kits to my satisfaction.) For me the Tom Daniel subjects were too cartoon like and I had already moved on from the hobby ( "Hippie"-dom beckoned ) but they ushered in a whole other generation of builders to the hobby. Essential hobby history.
